Notes: Measurements of body weight, total body water and total body potassium (40K) were made serially on three occasions during pregnancy and once post partum in 27 normal pregnant women. Skinfold thickness and fat cell diameter were also measured. A model of body composition was formulated to permit the estimation of changes in fat, lean tissue and water content of the maternal body. Total maternal body fat increased during pregnancy, reaching a peak towards the end of the second trimester before diminishing. Serial measurements of fat cell diameter showed poor correlation, whilst total body fat calculated from skinfold thickness correlated well with our estimated values for total body fat in pregnancy.

Notes: Summary. The gonadotrophin responses to single and repeated injections of a long-acting synthetic analogue of luteinizing hormone releasing factor (LRF), d-Ser(TBU)6EA10LHRH, were investigated in 10 women with normoprolactinaemic hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. Abnormal luteinizing hormone (LH) responses were observed in two of the five patients treated with 5μg of the analogue and in all five patients treated with three injections of 10, 20 and 10 uμg administered at intervals of 10-14 h. However, the LH response to repeated injections of the analogue was of similar magnitude and duration to that observed in normal women in response to an oestrogen provocation test in the early-to-mid follicular phase of the cycle. Thus failure of the LH response to oestrogen provocation in women with hypogonadotrophism results from hypothalamic rather than primary pituitary dysfunction. This study confirms the usefulness of this analogue of LRF in the assessment of pituitary secretory function in women with abnormal responses to oestrogen positive feedback.

Notes: Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)] is one of the major insect pests of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) worldwide. Hessian fly resistance gene H9 was previously reported to condition resistance to Hessian fly biotype L that is prevalent in many wheat-growing areas of eastern USA and an RAPD marker, OPO051000, linked to H9 in wheat was developed using wheat near-isogenic lines (NILs). However, marker-assisted selection (MAS) with RAPD markers is not always feasible. One of the objectives in this study was to convert an RAPD marker linked to the gene H9 into a sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker to facilitate MAS and to map H9 in the wheat genome. The RAPD fragment from OPO051000 was cloned, sequenced, and converted into a SCAR marker SOPO05909, whose linkage relationship with H9 was subsequently confirmed in two F2 populations segregating for H9. Linkage analysis identified one sequence tagged site (STS) marker, STS-Pm3, and the eight microsatellite markers Xbarc263, Xcfa2153, Xpsp2999, Xgwm136, Xgdm33, Xcnl76, Xcnl117 and Xwmc24 near the H9 locus on the distal region of the short arm of chromosome 1A, contrary to the previously reported location of H9 on chromosome 5A. Locus Xbarc263 was 1.2 cM distal to H9, which itself was 1.7 cM proximal to loci Xcfa2153, Xpsp2999 and Xgwm136. The loci Xgwm136, Xcfa2153 and SOPO05909 were shown to be specific to H9 and not diagnostic to several other Hessian fly resistance genes, and therefore should be useful for pyramiding H9 with other Hessian fly resistance genes in a single genotype.

Notes: Lake Chilwa (Malawi) is a shallow tropical lake surrounded by an extensive zone of littoral swamp mainly composed of Typha domingensis. The data produced show that the physical and chemical conditions are different and more varied in the littoral region when compared with the open lake. Primary production in the littoral is confined almost entirely to Typha domingensis, which also acts as a nutrient pump by absorbing nutrients from the soils and eventually releasing them into the lake waters. Long term and short term exchanges in organic and inorganic materials between the littoral swamps and the open lake are described. These, as well as available evidence on the distribution, reproductive habits and diet of certain faunal groups, indicate that the littoral region of Lake Chilwa has an important regulating influence on the functioning of the whole lake.

Notes: SUMMARY. The drift of chironomid egg masses was investigated in the River Mole (Devon) and the River Wye (Powys) in 1981. Large numbers of egg masses were found in the drift just after dusk; on one occasion an estimated 50,000 egg masses passed a sampling point in 5 h. Oviposition of free-floating egg masses appeared to be initiated and synchronized by the onset of darkness. Egg masses of some Pentaneurini (Tanypodinae), Tanytarsini and Chironomini (Chironominae) were found in the drift and adhering to submerged stones.Flotation by means of a gas vacuole within the egg mass was observed in the Polypedilum ‘convictum’ group. The gas vacuole decreased in size over 8–11 h and the egg masses sank after 2–3h.Some chironomid egg masses are capable of drifting large distances after oviposition. The implications of sueh drift are briefly discussed in relation to the distribution of chironomid larvae.

Notes: SUMMARY. Decomposition of Potamogeton pectinatus in Swartvlei, a southern African coastal lake, followed an exponential pattern of decay. The rale constant was 0.0205 day−1 and decay was virtually complete after 158 days. The original stock of ash, phosphorus and potassium was lost more rapidly than dry matter in the initial stages of decomposition due to leaching. Almost the entire stock of potassium and 60% of the phosphorus was lost in the first 7 days. The proportions of N and P in the decomposing detritus increase significantly in the final stages of decomposition, providing a rich food source for the abundant filter-feeding animals of the littoral zone. The decomposition rate of P. pectinatus is compared with that of other aquatic macrophytes and the significance of the relatively rapid decay rate of this species in the ecology of Swartvlei lake is discussed.
