    Notes: Protein deficiency is a major nutritional problem in Nigeria. Low Per capita income, adverse environment, and livestock diseases make it difficult to obtain sufficient quantities of high quality protein. Several selected food items common to Southern Nigeria were analyzed for essential ammo acids content. When these food items were grouped into a typical meal pattern for 1 wk, methionine was inadequate in breakfast; however, it was found that the average essential ammo acid intakes per day were adequate. With proper meal combinations and supplementations, it would be possible to improve dietary intakes of essential amino acids in Nigeria by utilizing common foods available and acceptable to the population.

    Notes: Summary An analysis of phosphorus concentrations and standing stocks in the various components of a dense Potamogeton pectinatus L. community in a brackish lake showed that the amounts of P per unit area varied in the following order: Sediments 〉 Above ground macrophytes 〉 Detritus 〉 Benthic Invertebrates 〉 Below ground macrophyte tissue 〉 Epiphytic algae 〉 Water soluble P 〉 Water borne particulate P. Seasonal changes in the variability of these stocks are described, and shown to be controlled by the annual growth and decomposition pattern of the Potamogeton. The sediments were suggested as the major source of P for the plant biomass. Studies using 32P tracer showed that of a given input of P to the water, 32% went to large epiphytic algae, 17% to the Potamogeton, 16% to the benthic fauna (mostly filter feeding bivalves), 28% to the sediments (almost all incorporated in the top 1 cm), and the remaining 7% was adsorbed on to, or absorbed by microorganisms associated with detritus. Analysis of 32P uptake curves indicated that of the P absorbed by the Potamogeton, a significant proportion went to the complex adnate periphyton on the leaf surface. We were unable to separate this fraction. Movement of P in the community was shown to be a closed cycle, and any release of P from decaying macrophytes would be rapidly reabsorbed by epiphytic algae. It is unlikely that phosphorus, once cycling in the macrophyte community, would become transferred to the circulation in the open lake.

    Notes: Abstract A detailed marine survey made to the South West of Mount Eratosthenes is described. The results show the existence of a narrow zone of WNW trending deformed sediment west of the mount surrounded by an evaporite sequence in different stages of deformation. This work was intended to settle the conflict between the results of three previous interpretations of the tectonic structure of this area. We see the area being characterised by five areas with different degrees of tectonic deformation yet showing little causal relationship to overburden of Nile Cone sediments. A fault controlled cliff coincides with the previously described salt wall and strike slip fault yet we see no evidence for its diapiric origin nor positive evidence for strike slip motion along it. We concur with the previously observed area of higher free-air gravity anomalies termed the Eratosthenes tectonic zone, although it is traversed by several boundaries between areas of different deformation. Our results thus show some agreements and some re-interpretations of the observations. This complicated region is not yet fully understood however.

    The western intersection of Oceanographer fracture zone with the mid-Atlantic ridge (1984)

    Notes: Abstract A survey across the western intersection of the mid-Atlantic ridge with Oceanographer fracture zone near 35°N shows this intersection to be different in character from its more typical eastern counterpart. At the western junction the transform valley broadens into a parallelogram shaped deep some 46 by 24 km, which extends well across the trace of the active transform. Within 30 km south of the fracture zone the median valley becomes oblique forming a NE trending ridge which is the SE edge of the deep. Magnetic mapping shows the current spreading centre to be adjacent to this ridge. A sequence of evolution for this intersection over the past 0.7 Ma is proposed to explain the features mapped. We suggest that the oblique ridge crest trends extended across the transform trace to form the elongated graben-like deep with its associated faults and sediment slumps. Such complex patterns may occur as plate-wide changes in spreading direction become modified by localised shear stress fields at ridge crest-transform intersections, as have been observed in a number of other cases. The absence of significant tranverse ridges across from the spreading centre at this particular fracture zone intersection, may have temporarily allowed these stress patterns to propagate across the fracture zone.
