Notes: Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is a common cardiac dysrhythmia which may or may not be associated with heart disease. The underlying mechanisms in the genesis of this dysrhythmia are alterations in automaticity or re-entry of the cardiac impulse. These mechanisms are reviewed in the context of the stresses of the peri-operative and operative periods. The anaesthetic management of three patients, particularly prone to paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, is described based on principles derived from the pathophysiology of re-entrant or ectopic atrial tachydysrhythmias.

Notes: Calcrete profiles (caliche) have been recognized in the Eyam Limestone from the Lower Carboniferous in the area around Monyash, Derbyshire. They occur at the top of the flank facies surrounding carbonate-mud buildups (‘knoll reefs’). Four units make up the complete profile. These are from base to top: (1) grain-supported sediment with rhizocretions, (2) matrix-supported sediment with alveolar texture, (3) pelleted calcrete, (4) laminar calcrete. Commonly one or more units are missing from the profile. Calcretes indicate subaerial exposure. The carbonate buildups of the Eyam Limestone were completely exposed soon after deposition, requiring a fall in sea-level probably in excess of 10 m. This discovery demands a review of previous regional palaeoenvironmental studies.

Notes: [Auszug] MR. WALLACE'S observations in NATURE, vol. xix. p. 4, on a black variety of the common lizard of Capri, as met with on the neighbouring islet of Faraglioni, induces me to refer to a similar appearance in the lizards frequenting the islet of Filfla, on the southern coast of Malta. As recorded in ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE sense of hearing is doubtless of much assistance in discovering the food of such birds as the scansores—to wit, woodpeckers, creepers, wrynecks and the like, which feed on insects. On one occasion, in a Canadian forest, whilst seated close to a rotting pine trunk, I heard distinct ...

Notes: [Auszug] REFERRING to Dr. Jeitteles' monograph on the Distribution of the Fallow Deer, translated by Mr. Sclater (NATURE, vol. xi., p. 71), it maybe interesting to record that fossil exuviæ referable to Cervus dama were discovered in Malta within the last few years. From inquiries I learn that they were ...

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Intracraniale Verkalkungen kommen bei zahlreichen Krankheiten vor.
Notes: Summary Intracranial calcifications are attributed to many diseases. The globus pallidus is almost always the site of bilateral idiopathic calcium deposits. Computed tomography is superior to conventional skull radiographs in detecting intracranial calcifications. Patients had symptoms that were often explained by other findings. Basal ganglia calcification alone is not a nosological entity and does not justify invasive diagnostic procedures.
