    Notes: 1 To investigate anti-inflammatory activity of organic germanium, we measured the effect of germanium-concentrated yeast on arachidonic acid release, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production, histamine release, and intracellular H2O2 or hydroperoxide generation in RBL 2H3 cells, and carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats. 2 Germanium-concentrated yeast dose-dependently inhibited carrageenan-induced paw oedema, suggesting that germanium-concentrated yeast has anti-inflammatory activity in acute inflammation. 3 Germanium-concentrated yeast significantly inhibited melittin-induced arachidonic acid release and PGE2 production in RBL 2H3 cells. 4 Germanium-concentrated yeast did not affect melittin-induced histamine release and silica-induced intracellular H2O2 or hydroperoxide generation in RBL 2H3 cells. 5 These results suggest that anti-inflammatory activity of germanium-concentrated yeast appears partly to be related to the inhibition of arachidonic acid release and PGE2 production in RBL 2H3 cells.

    Notes: Infantile systemic hyalinosis (ISH) is a very rare infantile stiff-skin syndrome characterized by extensive deposits of hyaline material in various organs, especially the skin and gingiva. Recent studies identified pathogenic mutations in the capillary morphogenesis gene 2 (CMG2) in both ISH and juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF). Capillary morphogenesis protein-2 is an integrin-like cell surface receptor for laminins and type IV collagen, and may play a key role in cell–matrix or cell–cell interactions. We report a case of ISH in a 13-month-old Taiwanese girl who manifested progressive joint contractures, recurrent chest infections, chronic diarrhoea with severe hypoalbuminemia and ascites, gum hypertrophy, and violaceous papules and nodules over the occipital area, neck, lumbosacral and anogenital areas since birth. Skin biopsy revealed a thickened and hyalinized papillary dermis. Electron microscopy showed abundant extracellular fibrillogranular material and active fibroblasts with conspicuous Golgi complex filled with fibrillar material. Mutation analysis identified a homozygous 1073–1074insC mutation of CMG2 which had been reported in four other families and may represent a mutation hot spot.

    Notes: Milk and milk concentrates containing 12–35% total solids were stored at 0, –2, –4, –6, –8, –12, and –20°C and protein stability of the thawed products was evaluated periodically. Samples stored at –4 to – 12°C exhibited poorer protein stability than samples stored at higher or lower temperatures. Ultrafiltered (UF) skimmilk with permeate: retentate ratios of 10:90, 20:80, and 30:70 were stored at –8°C and they remained stable at least three times longer than frozen control samples of UF skimmilk stored at the same temperature. When the extent of UF was increased to 40:60, protein stability in the frozen retentate declined somewhat as compared to that of less concentrated retentates.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of Cr, Ni, Mo, Si and Cu on the diffusivity of hydrogen inα-iron is studied in the temperature range of 160 to 430° C at a hydrogen pressure of 1 atm. The diffusivity of hydrogen was determined by absorption rate experiments using Sievert's type apparatus. The results show that the diffusivity of hydrogen in iron alloys decreases and the activation energy increases, as the concentration of the alloying elements increases, except Cu and Ni. The trapping parameters of hydrogen in iron alloys on the basis of Oriani's approach are calculated. The results show that Si, Mo and Cr are in order of increasing trap energy and that Cu and Ni have a negligible effect on hydrogen trapping. This can be explained by taking account of both chemical affinity effects and elastic strain effects of alloying elements on hydrogen trapping.
