Notes: The fermentation quality of small-bale silage and haylage for feeding to horses in Sweden, and using a conventional high-density hay baler, was investigated in two experiments. Treatments studied were use of additives (inoculants containing lactic acid bacteria and a chemical additive consisting of hexamethylenetetramine, sodium nitrate, sodium benzoate and sodium propionate), the influence of dry-matter (DM) content of wilted herbage and the effect of number of stretch film layers on fermentation pattern and aerobic stability. All silages and haylages were made from predominantly Timothy swards and were well fermented as indicated by low levels of ammonia and butyric acid. Values of pH were higher and concentrations of organic acids were lower in haylages than in the silages. This was not considered to be indicative of a poor fermentation in the haylage but of a restricted fermentation due to the high DM content of the herbage. The additives enhanced aerobic storage stability because of inhibition of mould growth. The only statistically significant effect of varying the number of stretch film layers was a higher content of CO2 inside the bales when ten layers of stretch film were applied compared with six layers.

Notes: [Auszug] PV DNA I was used as template for the Escherichia coli DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. After transcription viral DNA was thoroughly removed by exhaustive DNase treatment (M.G. and A.G., unpublished). To prevent any contamination with viral DNA, the cRNA preparation was then centrifuged to equilibrium ...

Notes: Summary This paper lists the factors that affect the stress tolerance of patients under-going surgery. Hypertonicity is observed in 64 percent of these patients, and signs of depleted coronary supply in 82.5 percent. The stress tolerance can be tested before surgery by means of gas analyses and determination of the minute volume and the pulmonary arterial pressure. During surgery, circulatory crises occur due to occlusion and release of large arterial branches. The anesthetic technique must be selected with due consideration of the increased risk. After surgery the oxygen consumption is increased, which lays heavier demands on the myocardial performance.

Notes: Summary In order to assess the quality and quantity of information which nurses possessed about a group of recently admitted patients, 230 questionnaires were distributed to nursing staff 5 to 24 hours after the patients' admissions. Items on which information was found to be defective included the name of the referring physician, the events prior to admission, the main points of the patient's history, his professional and social background, and the family situation. An interesting feed-back effect was noted in that the research procedure itself led to a better exchange of information. The fact that in closed wards information passes less rapidly and less completely than in open wards was noticed and is discussed.

Notes: Summary Linkage data of the four gene markers Pi, Gm, GLO, and HLA exclude Gm and Pi gene assignment to the short arm of chromosome 6. The findings, however, do not disprove the following gene order: HLA-GLO-centromere-Gm-Pi.

Notes: Abstract Potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) trihydrate, K4Fe(CN)6·3H2O, was heated under controlled conditions of mass and rate in a derivatograph in the presence of oxygen. The heating was stopped at different temperatures and Mössbauer spectra and X-ray diffractograms were taken on the quenched material at room temperature. The reaction pathway was studied in this way and the advantages and drawbacks of each of the techniques are described. At different stages of the thermal process we were able to show the presence of K4Fe(CN)6,α-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, Fe3C, Fe, FeO, KFeO2,Β-FeOOH, KOCN, K2CO3 and KCN.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In order to diagnose fractures of the head of the mandible, this paper recommends both clinical and radiological examinations.Spiessl andSchroll (1972) have established a classification of these fractures which shows the way of an adequate conservative-functional therapy. In most cases it is possible to get good functional results avoiding pain with the young patients and the formation of craniofocial asymmetries.
