    Notes: Soil contaminated with heavy metals is a salient example of environmental risk. Consumption of vegetables cultivated in contaminated soil or direct ingestion of soil by small children can damage health. In contrast to other kinds of pollution or risks such as air pollution or exposure to ozone, the individual risk concerning soil contamination is highly dependent on the way one is exposed to the local source of risk. Thus, we wanted to know if risk perception varies according to the level of exposure. A quasi-experimental, questionnaire-based study was conducted in a community in northwest Switzerland, where the soil is widely contaminated. The level of contamination varies with the distance from the source of the contamination, a metal processing plant. We investigated the perception of risk of heavy-metal-contaminated soil by inhabitants with high-exposure levels (N= 27) and those with low-exposure levels (N= 30). Both groups judged the risk for oneself similarly whereas the low-exposure group, when compared to the high-exposure group, judged perceived risk for other affected people living in their community to be higher. Besides this exposure effect, risk perception was mainly determined by emotional concerns. Participants with higher scores in self-estimated knowledge tended to provide low-risk judgments, were less interested in further information, showed low emotional concern, and thus displayed high risk acceptance. In contrast, actual knowledge showed no correlation with any of theses variables. Judgments on the need for decontamination are determined by risk perception, less application of dissonance-reducing heuristics and commitment to sustainability. The desire for additional information is not affected by missing knowledge but is affected by emotional concerns.

    Notes: Background: Stent design influences the procedural and mid-term results of coronary interventions. The trapezoid-shaped struts of the low pressure stent (LP™-Stent) might improve the outcome by reducing the vascular trauma at deployment. Methods: A total of 133 patients (64.5 ± 8.6 years) with significant de novo coronary lesions (reference diameter ≥2.8 mm, length 〈15 mm, and stenosis ≥70% and 〈100%) were enrolled for single stent deployment and a 6-month clinical and angiographic follow-up. Results: Stents were successfully deployed to 131/133 (98.5%) lesions. In one failed procedure (0.8%), the stenosis could be crossed with another device whereas in the second alternative stents also failed. Following edge dissection after LP™-Stent implantation, in 9/133 (6.8%) patients additional stents were deployed. Follow-up was performed as scheduled after 5.9 ± 0.9 months in 98/122 (80.3%) patients, prematurely for in-stent restenosis in 8/122 (6.6%), and clinically only in 8/122 (6.6%). Deaths, one of cardiac origin (0.9%), occurred in 2/114 (1.8%), and myocardial infarctions in 1/114 (0.9%). The culprit stenoses were dilated from 78.4 ± 9.7% to 23.3 ± 11.0% recurring to 43.1 ± 24.3% at scheduled follow-up. The late loss of 0.6 ± 0.8 mm and late loss index of 0.3 ± 0.5 translated into a binary restenosis rate of 24/98 (24.5%) requiring reintervention in 19/98 (19.4%). Conclusions: In summary, the LP™-Stent is associated with reduced intimal proliferation as reflected by the low late loss index when being compared with either noncoated or passively coated devices and higher in comparison to active coated stents. The considerable dissection rate seems to be related to higher deployment pressures and warrants design modification at the stent's distal edges.

    Notes: We have used yeast two-hybrid screens and biochemical methods to identify glycolytic enzymes that interact with subcellular structures in hypoxic maize seedlings. As binding domain-bait fusion constructs, we have cloned actin, cytosolic aldolase, the three sucrose synthase (SUS) isoforms SUS1, SUS3, and SH1 as well as the SNF1-related protein kinase into yeast and identified cytosolic isoforms of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), enolase, tubulin, and mitochondrial porin voltage-dependent anion channel protein (VDAC) as well as protein kinases and proteins involved in ubiquitinylation and proteasome-linked degradation as interacting activation domain-prey clones. The results were further confirmed using overlay blots (VDAC) as well as co-polymerization and co-precipitation assays (tubulin and actin). Some results were obtained that support the idea of metabolite and modification effects on the association, namely guanosine triphosphate (GTP)/MgCl2 was necessary for the binding of enolase to actin. GAPDH is inactivated upon association with tubulin but then serves to stabilize the microtubules. The findings support the idea of the dynamic formation of locally associated complexes of enzymes involved in sucrose breakdown and glycolysis in plant cells depending on their metabolic state.

    Notes: The performance of a novel industrial membrane bioreactor (MBR) comprising denitrification, nitrification and ultrafiltration for the secondary treatment of primary treated animal rendering wastewater has been compared with an experimental, low-cost and novel vertical-flow constructed wetland planted with Typha latifolia L. (Reedmace or Broad-leaved Cattail). The process wastewater followed pre-treatment by dissolved air flotation (DAF). The mean DAF effluent gave highly variable chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia concentrations of 5816 (standard deviation (SD): 3005.0) and 614 (SD: 268.7) mg/l, respectively. The mean MBR effluent for COD and ammonia was 37 and 86 mg/l, respectively. The mean treatment performance of the constructed wetland for COD, ammonia and suspended solids was 205, 67 and 57 mg/l, respectively.

    Notes: Screening for B-cell-specific antibodies in unabsorbed pregnancy sera preselected for weak reactivity in regular HLA-A, -B, and -C screening yielded a relatively high proportion (35/81) of B-cell-specific antibodies. Most B-cell-specific antibodies react broadly, showing inclusion phenomena suggesting ‘cross-reactivity’ analogous to that observed in HLA-A and -B serology. In control experiments with T-cell-enriched suspensions three antisera reacted with T cells and not with B cells. These antisera are highly associated with HLA-A2 in the unrelated population and segregate with HLA haplotypes in families and with HLA-A in a family with HLA-A, B recombination. Thus it appears that the human equivalents of la antigens may include—in analogy to the murine Ia antigens—B-cell- as well as T-cell-specific alloantigens.

    Notes: The association of HLA-A and -B antigens with Bf alleles was investigated in 200 parents from 100 unrelated families. There were significant associations between HLA-A3 and Bf-F, B7 and Bf-S, B8 and Bf-S, B12 and Bf-F, and BW35 and Bf-F. Three-point HLA-A,B,Bf haplotype frequencies, linkage disequilibrium parameters, and chi-square values were determined both from the genotype and from the pheno-type data. Although the HLA-B,Bf associations involve antigens that are also present in the highly associated A,B and B,D haplotypes of the Caucasian population, there was—with the possible exception of HLA-A3,B7,Bf-S–no significant three-point association for HLA-A,B,Bf.

    Notes: Components of mitogen-activated signal transduction pathways have been shown to be involved in flagellum biogenesis and maintenance. A mitogen-activated protein kinase homologue, designated LmxMPK9 from Leishmania mexicana, has been recently identified in a homology screen and its mRNA found to be present in all life stages. Three different splice-addition sites were used for mRNA maturation in trans-splicing in the different life stages. However, here we show that LmxMPK9 protein is exclusively found in the promastigote stage. Recombinant expression of LmxMPK9 in Escherichia coli and kinase assays revealed a temperature optimum at 27°C, the optimal growth temperature for L. mexicana promastigotes, and a preference for manganese to promote substrate phosphorylation of myelin basic protein. A deletion mutant for the single-copy gene revealed significantly elongated flagella, whereas overexpression led to a subpopulation with rather short to no flagella suggesting a role for LmxMPK9 in flagellar morphogenesis.

    Notes: Purpose - This paper introduces a new approach for autonomous internet-based environmental scanning, which combines concept of weak signals with "information foraging theory". Design/methodology/approach - Early detection and rapid action with respect to developments in the operating environment is a prerequisite for successful marketing planning. Accordingly, this paper proposes a three-stage process for overcoming practical obstacles to the detection and use of weak signals from the operating environment, in particular how to identify relevant and useful documents in harsh information environments such as the internet. Its functionality is demonstrated by means of a human-machine experiment. Findings - A framework based on information foraging theory is well suited to the task of determining the relevance of documents and facilitates the automation of information search processes. A prototype environmental scanning system of this type outperformed human experts in a typical scanning task. Research limitations/implications - Embedding the detection of weak signals in a formal process permits intelligence gatherers to step beyond anecdotal evidence, and complements the current literature on weak signal detection with formal and systematic procedural guidelines. Practical implications - The presented methodology facilitates both the selection and the structuring of information sources. This unburdens the managers and leaves time for important tasks such as the development of concrete marketing plans reacting to detected developments. Originality/value - The paper provides a comprehensive framework for web-based weak signal detection in business environments, and can be used as a starting point for the development of practicable environmental scanning systems.
