    Notes: Plots of S24 perennial ryegrass were grazed fire times by sheep to stubble heights of 10–15 cm (treatment L), 5 cm (M) and 2 cm (S), other plots were cut (C) at approximately the same height as in M. the quantity of digestible organic matter (DOM) harvested by cutting at 5 cm was not significantly different from that harvested by grazing at the same average height there were only minor differences between grazing treatments in the amounts of DOM harvested, but the number of hours for which the sheep had to be maintained on the plots in order to graze the swards to the required heights increased 4-fold between treatments L and S. the results are discussed in relation to the total DOM harvested in each treatment.

    Notes: There has been global neglect of service users’ and carers’ experiences of dementia care provision in rural areas. The present paper draws on a qualitative study of service provision for people with dementia and their carers in remote and rural Scotland. It draws on interviews with 15 people with dementia and 16 carers to explore their views about health and social dementia care service provision in rural Scotland. A further 14 carers of people with dementia participated in one of three focus groups. The paper discusses perceived gaps in services as well as positive aspects of dementia service provision which service users attribute to living in a rural area. The important issues this raises for the development of dementia care provision in rural areas are briefly discussed.

    Notes: Background High levels of allergen-specific IgG have been associated with clinical efficacy in immunotherapy studies, but whether this antibody isotype is associated with clinical tolerance in the setting of environmental exposure remains unclear.Objective To determine if mouse allergen-specific IgG (mIgG) and IgG4 (mIgG4) levels are associated with mouse-related symptoms among IgE-sensitized laboratory workers.Methods Fifty-eight workers with either skin test or serologic evidence of IgE-mediated mouse sensitization were studied. Symptom data were obtained by a questionnaire. Serum levels of mouse-specific IgG, IgG4, and IgE were quantified by a solid-phase antigen-binding assay (IgG) and RAST (IgG4 and IgE), and the relationships between mouse-specific serologic responses and mouse-related symptoms were analysed.Results Twenty-three (39.7%) participants reported mouse-related symptoms. Mouse-specific IgG and IgG4 levels were not associated with mouse-related symptoms among the study population as a whole. Among the 29 (50%) participants with detectable mouse-specific IgE (mIgE), higher mouse-specific IgG and IgG4 levels were associated with a decreased risk of symptoms, after adjusting for mIgE level (odds ratio (OR) 0.3, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.1–1.4, and OR 0.3, 95% CI: 0.04–2.6, respectively). Higher levels of mIgG and mIgG4 remained associated with a decreased risk of symptoms after additional adjustment for sex and handling of mice (OR 0.1, 95% CI: 0.02–0.7, and OR 0.2, 95% CI: 0.02–2.1, respectively). Higher mIgG : IgE and mIgG4 : IgE ratios were also associated with a decreased risk of symptoms after adjusting for these confounders (OR 0.1, 95% CI: 0.02–0.7, and OR 0.2, 95% CI: 0.02–0.92, respectively).Conclusion Among workers with detectable mIgE, higher mIgG and mIgG4 levels are associated with a decreased risk of mouse-related symptoms. High serum levels of mIgG or mIgG4 may be markers for clinical tolerance among laboratory mouse workers with detectable mIgE, but these findings need to be confirmed in larger, prospective studies.

    Notes: SUMMARY— The relative dielectric loss factor in aqueous solutions of nonfat dried milk has been studied through chemical simulation of its major constituents. This study shows that milk dielectric loss cannot be predicted simply on the basis of its chemical composition. It does, however, provide a conceptual basis for milk modeling which leads to a more general understanding of food dielectric properties. The focal point in milk simulation was shown to be a complex relationship of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions which reduce the dielectric loss factors to levels substantially lower than those predicted by considering only chemical composition. These include both binding and nonbinding interactions of the solutes. The binding effects are believed to result from the incomplete dissociation of milk salts in a saturated ionic environment and are reflected by a reduction of specific ion activities in solution. Nonbinding effects, on the other hand, are seen to result from the formation of hydrated ion complexes. These effects, in conjunction with chemical composition, are shown to completely determine the dielectric loss level in dried milk solutions.

    Notes: Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars have been reported to range in tolerance to injury by 4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazine-5(4H)one (metribuzin), from tolerant (e.g.‘Bragg’) to susceptible (e.g.‘Coker 102’ and ‘Semmes’). ‘Bragg,’‘Coker 102’, and ‘Semmes’ soybeans were grown in sand subirrigated with nutrient solution containing labelled (14C-carbonyl metribuzin) and nonlabelled metribuzin to determine cultivar variability in absorption, translocation, and metabolism of metribuzin. Plants were periodically harvested, autoradiographed, and radioactivity in tissue extracts quantified. Data indicated that all 3 cultivars readily absorbed and translocated metribuzin. However, ‘Bragg’ tissues accumulated greater quantities of metribuzin metabolites than the other two cultivars. The major 14C-containing metabolite in ‘Semmes’ and ‘Coker’ roots and stems was 6-tert-butyl-as-triazine-3-5-(2H,4H)-dione, whereas the major 14C-metabolite isolated from‘Bragg’ roots and stems was a glucose conjugate. Results indicated that differential-intraspecific responses to metribuzin may result from differential capacities for herbicide detoxification by conjugation.
