Notes: The aim of this study was to investigate whether increased oxidative stress occurs in erosive lichen planus of the vulva. Skin biopsies from six patients with untreated, histologically confirmed erosive lichen planus of the vulva were examined immunohistochemically using antibodies against antioxidant enzymes. The protein-bound lipid peroxidation products malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenale (4-HNE) and the oxidative DNA damage marker 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were investigated. Protein carbonyls as markers of protein oxidation were visualised using the dinitrophenylhydrazone (DNPH) method. Normal vulval tissues from 12 subjects served as controls. In vulval lichen planus tissue the enzymatic antioxidant defence was found to be significantly decreased in the epidermal layers. Furthermore, a significant increase of lipid peroxidation products and oxidative DNA damage was found within the epidermis. Protein oxidation occurred predominantly in the papillary dermis. This is the first study to demonstrate a decreased antioxidant defence and increased oxidative damage to lipids, DNA and proteins in lichen planus. These oxidative modifications point to pathophysiological alterations mainly within the basal cell layers of the epidermis and at the dermoepidermal junction. Further studies are warranted to investigate the potential role of oxidative stress in the development of autoimmunity in this disease.

Notes: Purpose - This paper sets out to provide a step towards simplifying and shortening loyalty surveys for marketers and to summarise and to categorise more than 30 survey-based loyalty measures administered in previous academic surveys. Design/methodology/approach - This research took a step back from theory to re-define the concept of loyalty. An exploratory perspective using two service markets was taken to examine a broad range of survey-based loyalty measures. Findings - The results of this research provide support for the more recent view that there are different ways in which customers can be loyal. The results of this research suggest that attitudinal loyalty could be the most important dimension for marketers to monitor. The exploratory method selected in this research suggests that dimensions of loyalty may include propensity to be loyal, behavioural intentions, complaining behaviour, resistance to competing offers, attitudinal loyalty and behavioural loyalty. Practical implications - There are important managerial implications arising from this research. First, loyalty should be considered as more than one thing. Second, this research has provided a step towards consolidating a wide range of survey-based loyalty measures that exist in the academic literature, helping to simplify loyalty measurement for marketers. This research paper provides a guide of the better survey-based measures by identifying "pure" measures of loyalty for marketers. Marketers will be able to better understand what type of loyalty a measure captures. Originality/value - Valuable for marketers who can be helped to simplify and shorten their surveys by better understanding what type of loyalty a survey measure captures and which measures may be most appropriate for their needs.

Notes: We investigated the embryotoxicity of ozone (O3), after gas exposure in ovo, to chick embryos of the Lohmann-Weiss strain. The main aim of the study is to reduce the microbiological content, particularly of Salmonella enteritides on the egg surface by the use of ozone in different concentrations and response times. The aim of our morphological study is to analyse the influence of gas exposure to the embryonal development of chick. Ozone has proved its worth as a disinfectant without the harmful adverse effects of formaldehyde. The chick embryo provides a useful and well-defined model for analysis of toxicity of chemicals, particularly with regard to an alternative disinfectant: ozone. Embryotoxicity of ozone in developing chick embryos was studied by examining different parameters: deformities and pathohistology of heart, liver, kidney and spleen, weight, length and survival of embryo. After oviposition the eggs were transferred to a chamber filled with ozon-oxygen-mixture in a defined concentration (1% - 5.22%). After achievement of the ozone concentration the eggs were incubated over various response times have 20, 30, 60 min or 17 h. After the incubator times of 18, 19 or 20 days we studied the development of the gas exposed embryos and unexposed controls. The organs were fixed in 4% formalin, embedded in paraffin, cut and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. High ozone concentration over 5% and high response time of 1 hour provided low graded survival rates of 3.3–13.3%. There was significantly increase of the survival rate after decline of ozone concentration and response time of 90–100%. We found also a remarkable decrease of weight and length in fewer surviving gas exposed embryos with high ozone concentration and response time (Fig. 1.), compared with the normal development of gas-exposed embryos with study of high survival rate (Fig. 2.). We calculated a 60% increase in the survival rate of embryos exposed to high ozone concentration without response time. In low ozone concentration (1.8%) with high response time of 17 hours the survival rate decreased to 10%. We found no signs of deformities and pathohistology of organs in our embryological examination. In conclusion, ozone has a dose-dependent effect. The response time constitutes an important factor in the survival and growth of chick embryos after exposure to ozone in ovo. 〈displayedItem type="text" xml:id="fu3"〉1〈mediaResource alt="image" href="urn:x-wiley:03402096:AHE669_44_44:AHE_669_fu3"/〉 [ High ozone concentration over 5% and high response time of 1 hour result in a low survival rate of 3,3% and the surviving embryo shows a decrease in body weight and length (right) in comparison to the biggest (left) and lowest (middle) unexposed embryo. ] 〈displayedItem type="text" xml:id="fu4"〉2〈mediaResource alt="image" href="urn:x-wiley:03402096:AHE669_44_44:AHE_669_fu4"/〉 [ Height comparison between the unexposed controls (both embryos on the left side) with gas exposed embryos (both embryos on the right side) in a study with low ozone concentration of 1% and low response time of 20 minutes. Notes: Aims:  To carry out an immunohistochemical study on bone marrow (BM) biopsy specimens in 75 patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) on long-term STI571 therapy. Methods and results:  Sequential BM specimens taken at intervals of 21 ± 6 months were investigated by enzyme- and immunohistochemistry including proliferating cell nuclear antigen and apoptosis. Evaluation was performed either by semiquantitative scoring or by morphometry (CD61+ megakaryopoiesis). In 41 patients with chronic phase CML, treatment resulted in a significant decrease in cellularity and neutrophil granulopoiesis contrasting with an accumulation of erythroid precursor cells. Morphometry showed a reduction of abnormal micromegakaryocytes consistent with normalization. Regression of myelofibrosis was identified in eight of 15 patients, whereas progression occurred in 17 patients; mostly in those with acceleration and blastic crisis. The increased post-treatment incidence of reactive lymphoid nodules was remarkable. Myeloblasts, CD34+ progenitors and immature myelomonocytic cells initially decreased, but recurred in 14 patients who later developed a relapse. STI571 exerted an inhibitory effect on cell proliferation associated with enhanced apoptosis in responding patients. Conclusion:  Long-term treatment with STI571 exerts pronounced changes on BM histopathology that not only involve haematopoiesis and stromal constituents, but also proliferation and apoptosis.

Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the dominant consumer decision theory models and understand why that theory has received little empirical validation. A "decision waves" theory is proposed - an alternative, multi-phase approach to decision making using image theory. An approach to validating empirically the multi-phase theory is outlined. Design/methodology/approach - This conceptual paper examines the foundations of modern consumer decision theory and argues for a more representative model of actual consumer decisions. Findings - Decision waves provide a theoretical approach to represent more accurately consumer decision making and improve understanding in this foundational component of marketing. Decision waves do not change detailed empirical findings: however, they do change the macro perspective of how those findings are assembled for marketing. Research limitations/implications - An empirical test of decision waves theory is ongoing. Practical implications - The concepts outlined in this paper will change segmentation, positioning and how tactical plans are developed within the marketing mix, particularly for promotional strategies. Originality/value - A theoretical approach that represents decision making more accurately will bring us closer to understanding this foundational component of marketing. It provides a basis for differentiation in congested markets.
