Notes: Perovskite-type BaCeO3 has been investigated to study the effects of preparation method and cation doping on the particle size and sintering in the fabrication of dense perovskite membranes. A variety of preparation methods including solid-state reactions, coprecipitation, microemulsion, and molten salt reactions have been studied. In coprecipitation and microemulsion preparations, perovskites were formed at significantly lower temperatures than that required in a solid-state preparation. The pH of the reactant solutions has been found to greatly affect the particle size and agglomeration of BaCeO3 perovskites. Smallest perovskite particles with sizes of 40–60 nm were obtained by the microemulsion preparation with minimal agglomeration. Transition metal dopants such as neodymium and manganese cations were doped into BaCeO3 and their effects on the particle size and agglomeration of perovskite particles investigated. Both small particle size and cation doping significantly helped the sintering of perovskites.

Notes: In this project, a process was developed to cure concrete masonry blocks using CO2. It was found that the strength of concrete mixtures for block manufacture after CO2 curing was close to that after conventional steam curing. A dry pre-conditioning before CO2 curing was very critical to achieve high degree of CO2 curing. The specimen pre-conditioned in the moist environment hydrates more than those pre-conditioned in the dry environment during the pre-conditioning period. However, much less CaCO3 formed in the former that that in the latter after the CO2 curing. Thus, the CO2 curing is mainly contributed by the reactions between CO2 gas and cement clink minerals

Notes: Helical structure plays an important role in many fields and the machining quality isimportant for its applications. In this paper, a kind of functional hollow lightweight metallicmicro-helixes based on cells of spirulina was manufactured by bio-limited forming. Then theimpurity degree and the un-metallization degree, two important parameters to evaluate the machiningquality of the functional micro-helixes in the application to chiral microwave absorbing material wereinvestigated. Numeric models were established and the regularities were researched on how the twoparameters are influenced by metallization technology factors. The results showed that the values ofthese two parameters could be reduced by adjusting the volume of the original deposition solution for1g filtered wet activated cells, the diluted multiples of the original deposition solution, thetemperature of reaction and the time of reaction so as to improve the machining quality

Notes: Hardened cement paste and concrete are porous materials. Most engineering properties of hardened cement pastes and concrete, such as strength, shrinkage, permeability, etc., are influenced or controlled by their pore structure characteristics. The ingress of chloride ion into concrete can cause steel corrosion and damage of steel reinforced concrete structure. This paper reviews the porestructure characteristics and transport mechanisms of chloride ion, such as hydrostatic advection, capillary suction, diffusion, thermal migration and electrical migration, in hardened cement pastes and concrete

Notes: Sulphate ion and chloride ion existed in the alkaline saline soils may cause seriousproblems on the durability of reinforced concrete structures, while it is found that superfine mineral powder plays positive role in the precaution of the alkaline saline corrosion. A composite cement named high performance cement (H.P.C) composed of clinker, metakaolin and fly ash powder in appropriate proportions is developed with good performance in preventing concrete from alkaline saline soil corrosion. Mortar bar test and visual examination showed that the cement couldeffectively control AAR and sulphate ion related expansion, and the charge passed tested according to ASTM C1202 was decreased to “negligible” level for concrete with W/B ratio of 0.3, and “very low” grade for concrete with W/B ratio of 0.45 and 0.55 when the high performance cement was used. Other properties such as low hydration heat and anti-freezing properties, as well as the uniformity of the fresh concrete (with no bleeding and segregation), made it an important material in the construction of concrete structure in alkaline saline soils
