Notes: summary  The purposes of this study were (i) to compare the reproducibility of lateral tooth contacts of casts mounted in a semi-adjustable articulator when condylar guidance was set by different methods and (ii) to assess the margin of error of the variations of condylar guidance without changing lateral tooth contacts, depending on the type of lateral guidance. In subjects with different types of lateral guidance, intraoral lateral tooth contacts identified with occlusal registration strips were compared with those identified by use of a semi-adjustable articulator, setting the condylar guidance in four different ways: using protrusive wax wafers, by axiography and by adding and subtracting 5° from the value of condylar guidance obtained by protrusive wax wafers. Tolerance to variations of condylar guidance without changing lateral tooth contacts was determined by increasing and decreasing the value of condylar guidance until lateral tooth contacts changed. Different ways of setting condylar guidance on a semi-adjustable articulator give rise to different values of condylar guidance in the same subject. The occlusal repercussions of these variations of condylar guidance values depend on the type of lateral guidance. Canine protection had the greatest tolerance to variations in the setting of condylar guidance without changing lateral occlusal contacts.

Notes: Aims : To perform a morphometric analysis of carotid bodies in opiate addicts. Methods and results : Carotid bodies were sampled at autopsy from 35 subjects who died of heroin intoxication (mean age 26 years), and from eight young (22 years) and eight older subjects (66.5 years) who died of trauma. Sections were stained with haematoxylin–eosin, azan-Mallory, and double-labelling immunohistochemistry with antineuronal specific enolase and anti-S100, to count type I and type II cells. Interlobular and intralobular connective tissue was increased both in the opiate cases (43.45 ± 6.79%, P 〈 0.001, and 13.34 ± 5.72%, P 〈 0.001, respectively) and older cases (46.67 ± 1.65%, P 〈 0.001, and 9.62 ± 2.11%, P 〈 0.05, respectively) compared with young cases (33.17 ± 6.41% and 4.33 ± 1.84%, respectively). The percentage of type II cells in the opiate cases (51.6 ± 7.3%, P 〈 0.001) and in the older controls (49.0 ± 7.2%, P 〈 0.01) was higher than in the young cases (37.9 ± 3.0%). Among type I cells, the light cell percentage in the opiate cases (65.85 ± 11%, P 〈 0.001) was reduced with respect to the two control groups (82.8 ± 5.34%, young; 81.62 ± 8.58%, older). Conclusions : The increases in connective tissue and type II cells are similar to findings in ageing and chronic pulmonary disease, and may be ascribed to glomic hypoxia. A direct action of opiates should be taken into account for the decrease in light cells in heroin addiction. The histopathological changes in the carotid body, by impairing chemosensivity, may play a role in the fatal cardiorespiratory derangement of heroin addicts.

Notes: [Auszug] Cell proliferation and cell fate decisions are strictly coupled processes during plant embryogenesis and organogenesis. In the Arabidopsis thaliana root epidermis, expression of the homeobox GLABRA2 (GL2) gene determines hair/non-hair cell fate. This requires signalling of positional ...

Notes: Purpose - Modern day manufacturing has seen the replacement of manual transfer of parts between press machines with automatic transfer systems. Higher automation productivity demands greater flexibility of transfer devices. This paper deals with methods to improve the flexibility of fixtures designed to transfer parts between press machines. Design/methodology/approach - Describes methods to improve the flexibility of fixtures designed to transfer parts between press machines in Press Shop 3 at Iran Khodro Company (IKCO). A fuzzy C means clustering-based method is developed to optimize the number and arrangement of actuators for each fixture. Economical aspects of this novel design are addressed as well. Findings - The simulation results suggest that application of a flexible fixtures system and use of linear motors was the best method of adding flexibility to the loader-unloader system. Originality/value - Provides evidence that flexible components are indispensable to increasing production speed and reliability in an automated system.
