    Notes: Background : Current treatment of ulcerative colitis is imperfect. Trefoil peptides are known to stimulate repair in many models of injury, including animal models of colitis.Aim : To assess the efficacy of trefoil factor family-3 enema treatment in a clinical trial.Methods : A total of 16 patients with mild-to-moderate left sided ulcerative colitis were recruited into a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study. Patients taking steroids or with proctitis only were excluded. Patients received 75 mL enemas containing either human recombinant trefoil factor family-3 (10 mg/mL) or saline alone once a day for 14 days. All patients also received an oral dose-increment of 1.2 g of mesalazine daily above their normal usage. Patients were assessed at 0, 2, 4 and 12 weeks. Remission was defined as Ulcerative Colitis Disease Activity Index of 0 or 1 with no blood in stool. Individual clinical improvement was defined as a Ulcerative Colitis Disease Activity Index reduction of 〉3. Data was analysed using chi-square test and anova.Results : Median Ulcerative Colitis Disease Activity Index at entry were 8.5 (trefoil factor family-3 group) and 8 (placebo group). Analysed on an intention-to-treat basis, only one patient went into remission (in trefoil factor family-3 group at day 28). Clinical improvement was seen in two trefoil factor family-3 and three placebo patients on day 14 and two patients in each group on day 28.Conclusion : Increasing the dose of 5-aminosalicylic acid was moderately effective in reducing the Ulcerative Colitis Disease Activity Index but was insufficient to induce remission. Trefoil factor family-3 enemas were well-tolerated but did not provide additional benefit above that of adding additional 5-aminosalicylic acid alone.

    Notes: Purpose - The objective of the present work is to find an alternative approach for gearbox condition monitoring using wear particle characterization incorporated with image vision systems. Design/methodology/approach - It is a quite well-known phenomenon that wear generates whenever two metallic bodies have contact with each; other hence the present work tries to investigate the effect of improper lubrication in the gearbox due to wear particle generation between gear wheels. Since the identification of wear for machine condition monitoring needs much expertise knowledge and is time-consuming using the conventional process, fractal mathematics with image morphological analysis has been utilized to overcome this situation in the present work. Findings - The type of wear has been found for the present method by utilizing the lubricant used in the system ferrographically and a great deal of image processing has been done to characterize the type of particle so that the proper maintenance strategy can be undertaken. Originality/value - Wear particle characterization is a quite common method in maintenance engineering, especially when fault diagnosis of any equipment is concerned. In the present work, the CCD acquisition of the images has been done for different particles, but one analysis amongst them has been shown in this paper. Among all other methodologies, the new technique of fractal mathematics has been used in the present work to minimize the imaging hazards and to make the system more user-friendly.

    Notes: In metallic alloys, the formation of macrostructure involves different lengthand time scales. The macrostructure strongly influences the mechanical properties of thematerials. Modeling of macrostructure provides valuable insights for tailoring of themacrostructure. In the present study simulation of macrostructure in Al-22Sn has beencarried out. Expression for nucleation rate and growth rate were tuned to get a match withthe experimentally observed macrostructure. The study incorporates the motion of grainsdue to Brownian motion. Incorporation of Brownian motion resulted in more uniformdistribution locally, which has been experimentally observed.     Notes: Articular cartilage has an inadequate natural rebuilding capacity. Tissue engineering has shown to have potential to provide an effective alternative to engineer the damaged cartilage. In this study, an integrated porous bi-layered scaffold was developed aiming to mimic the requirements of cartilage and underlying subchondral bone. The osteochondral approach explored in this work was to includea common polymeric component in both cartilage and bone components, which maximised the integration at the interface by mean of a melt-based processing route. A blend of starch and poly(Llactic acid),PLLA, was used in the cartilage side, which was found to possess an adequate water uptake capability. For the bone region, to induce bioactivity, PLLA had been reinforced withhydroxyapatite (HA) and bioactive glass (BG). The surfaces of the constructs were investigated as a function of soaking time in a simulated body (SBF) fluid using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FTIR. The SEM – FTIR indicated a bone-like apatite formation and the surfacecoverage by apatite layer increased with increasing soaking time, whereas the cartilage-layer did not exhibit the formation of any apatite like layer

    Notes: Novel fluorcanasite based glass-ceramics were produced by controlled two stage heattreatment of as-cast glasses. Castability of parent glasses was determined using a graduated spiral cast piece. Fluorcanasite glasses were also cast to form complex shapes using the lost wax casting technique. Gypsum and phosphate bonded investments were used to investigate their effect on thecasting process, cast surface crystallinity and biocompatibility. The stoichiometric composition had the greatest castability but the other two modified compositions also had good castability. X-ray diffraction showed similar bulk crystallisation for each glass irrespective of the investment material. However, some differences in surface crystallisation in the presence of different investment materials were detected. Discs cast using gypsum bonded investment showed greater in vitro biocompatibility than equivalent discs cast using phosphate bonded investment under the conditionsused. Gypsum and phosphate bonded investments could both be successfully used for the lost wax casting of these novel fluorcanasite glasses
