    Notes: Yttrium silicates are promising materials for improved oxidation and erosion protection for carbon fiber-reinforced composites. A two-layer coating system of low-pressure plasma-sprayed yttrium silicate on chemical vapor deposition-SiC-precoated C/C–SiC was tested under atmospheric re-entry conditions simulated within a plasma wind tunnel test facility. The thermal expansion behavior of Y2SiO5 and Y2Si2O7 was investigated. The chemical compatibility with and without increasing oxygen partial pressure at the interface of the two-layer system was calculated by the CALPHAD method. The calculations were compared with experimental results. Furthermore, a thermodynamic explanation is presented to understand and predict the observed coating failure mechanism, identified as blister formation.

    Notes: The forces shaping the revolution in banking and capital markets have radically changed the financial landscape during the past three decades. A remarkable feature of this changing new landscape has been the astonishing rate of internationalisation of the financial system in the last two decades, with emerging markets becoming increasingly important participants. At times this participation has led to excessive reliance on foreign financing, making the participation of these countries in the global financial system more vulnerable to shifts in expectations and perceptions. The sovereign debt management strategy suffered from many structural weaknesses, failing to take into account international best practices in financing budget deficits and developing domestic government securities markets. Consequently, emerging markets experienced episodes of serious financial crises. Against this background, this article focuses on new and more sophisticated strategies to develop domestic bond markets, taking into account the risk profile, complexities and other constraints of emerging markets. The article's central thesis is that risk-based public debt management and liquid domestic bond markets are important mutually reinforcing strategies for emerging financial markets to attain (1) enhanced financial stability, and (2) a more successful participation in the global financial landscape. It will also be shown that this twin-strategies approach requires taking a macroeconomic policy perspective.

    Notes: Gram-negative bacteria possess outer membrane receptors that utilize energy provided by the TonB system to take up iron. Several of these receptors participate in extracytoplasmic factor (ECF) signalling through an N-terminal signalling domain that interacts with a periplasmic transmembrane anti-sigma factor protein and a cytoplasmic sigma factor protein. The structures of the intact TonB-dependent outer membrane receptor FecA from Escherichia coli and FpvA from Pseudomonas aeruginosa have recently been solved by protein crystallography; however, no electron density was detected for their periplasmic signalling domains, suggesting that it was either unfolded or flexible with respect to the remainder of the protein. Here we describe the well-defined solution structure of this domain solved by multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The monomeric protein construct contains the 79-residue N-terminal domain as well as the next 17 residues that are part of the receptor's plug domain. These form two clearly distinct regions: a highly structured domain at the N-terminal end followed by an extended flexible tail at the C-terminal end, which includes the ‘TonB-box’ region, and connects it to the plug domain of the receptor. The structured region consists of two alpha-helices that are positioned side by side and are sandwiched in between two small beta-sheets. This is a novel protein fold which appears to be preserved in all the periplasmic signalling domains of bacterial TonB-dependent outer membrane receptors that are involved in ECF signalling, because the hydrophobic residues that make up the core of the protein domain are highly conserved.

    Notes: Model ecosystems were grown in 12 sunlit, climate-controlled chambers to gain insight into the effects of elevated (+3°C) air temperature (Tair) on temperate grasslands. In this study, the hypothesis of delayed senescence in response to elevated Tair was tested for Rumex acetosa L. and Plantago lanceolata L. During the autumn of the first treatment year, frequent measurements were made of leaf chlorophyll a (Chla) fluorescence transients. Chl fluorescence images of individual leaves as well as digital colour images of these ecosystems were captured. Chl fluorescence variables, such as the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry (Fv/Fm), indicated a decreasing efficiency with time. Despite no treatment effect on Fv/Fm, other variables derived from the Chl fluorescence transients showed a strong trend towards a positive effect of a 3°C temperature increase on the photosynthetic performance of R. acetosa and P. lanceolata in the first year. After mid-September, the initial positive treatment effect disappeared for R. acetosa, strongly suggesting that leaf lifespan of this species was shortened by higher Tair. One possible explanation is more intense drought stress in the elevated compared to the ambient temperature treatments. Second-year measurements were possibly too limited in time to confirm this trend. These results show that temperate grassland species may take advantage of a future increase in Tair during autumn. This will ultimately depend on the species' degree of acclimation to a temperature change and on the resistance to drought stress.

    Notes: A decrease in ostial pulmonary vein (PV) diameter was observed in patients on the day after radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). This study examined whether a relative reduction in PV diameter on day 1 (RRPVD1) after the procedure predicts the late development of severe PV stenosis (PVS). The study included 104 consecutive patients (mean age = 55 years, range 46–61, 34 women) with drug refractory AF. Pulmonary vein diameter was measured using MR angiography (MRA) on the day before and on day 1 after the ablation procedure. The MRA was repeated every 3 months after the procedure. Severe PVS was defined as a 〉70% diameter reduction from the initial ostial diameter. The cut-off of RRPVD1 was prespecified as 25% decrease in initial diameter. The data are presented as medians and interquartile range. A total of 357 PV were treated. The RRPVD1 was 0.0% (0.0–11.1%). Severe PVS was found in 18 PV during a follow-up of 12 months (range 6–13). The log-rank analysis confirmed a strong association between a RRPVD1 ≥25% and the development of PVS (hazard ratio: 7.1; 95% confidence interval 3.8–13.5, P 〈 0.0001). By multivariate Cox regression model, after adjustment of procedure variables, RRPVD1 was the strongest predictor of development of severe PVS. RRPVD1 ≥25% was a strong independent predictor of development of severe PVS.

    Notes: The paper presents an overview of a number of unusual phase transformations which takeplace in pearlitic steels in conditions of the severe deformation, i.e. combination of high pressureand strong shear strain. Strain-induced cementite dissolution is a well-documented phenomenon,which occurs during cold plastic deformation of pearlitic steels. Recently new results which canshed additional light on the mechanisms of this process were obtained thanks to 3DAP and HRTEMinvestigations of pearlitic steel deformed by high pressure torsion (HPT). It was shown that theprocess of cementite decomposition starts by carbon depletion from the carbides, which indicatesthat the deviation of cementite’s chemical composition from the stoichiometric is the main reasonfor thermodynamic destabilisation of cementite during plastic deformation. Important results wereobtained regarding the distribution of released carbon atoms in ferrite. It was experimentallyconfirmed that carbon segregates to the dislocations and grain boundaries of nanocrystalline ferrite.Another unusual phase transformation taking place in nanocrystalline pearlitic steel during roomtemperature HPT is a stress induced α→γ transformation, which never occurs during conventionaldeformation of coarse grained iron and carbon steels. It was concluded that this occurred due to areverse martensitic transformation. The atomistic mechanism and the thermodynamics of thetransformation, as well as issues related to the stability of the reverted austenite will be discussed
