Notes: Background  Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune mucocutaneous disease. We previously reported that B cells in a Castleman tumour associated with PNP produced autoantibodies. However, it is uncertain whether the production of autoantibodies from the associated tumour is a common mechanism in PNP.Objectives  To investigate autoantibody production in a thymoma and a follicular dendritic cell sarcoma that were excised from two patients with PNP.Methods  Tumour cells were cultured, and their surface markers were identified. Indirect immunofluorescence, immunoblotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using culture media from the tumours were used to detect PNP autoantibodies. Results  B cells with markers (CD22+, surface membrane IgG+ and surface membrane IgM+) of mature B lymphocytes constituted a proportion of cultured tumour cells in both tumours. Western blot showed that the medium from both the thymoma and the follicular dendritic cell sarcoma cells recognized 190-kDa periplakin and 210-kDa envoplakin bands of human epithelial proteins as well as recombinant linker regions of periplakin, envoplakin, desmoplakin and bullous pemphigoid antigen 1. ELISA was positive for antidesmoglein 3 antibody. Conclusions  The presence and localization in tumours of B-lymphocyte clones against proteins of the plakin family and desmoglein 3 in skin may not be confined to PNP with Castleman disease, but is possibly a common mechanism in PNP associated with various tumours.

Notes: This paper presents a methodology for validating surface metrology software. Baseduncertainty analysis, a set of reference data sets with mathematical correct results, call the type F1softgauges, have been developed. Special designed profiles can be used to check specificationuncertainty and algebra calculation is used to lower method uncertainty. The results shown thatspecification uncertainties were main uncertainty contributors

Notes: Single-wall Carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) bonded with dodecylamine groups wereobtained by chemical modification. The modified SWNTs showed improved solubility in organicsolvents. Both its chemical and aggregated structure was characterized by means of FTIR and TEM.The photoconductivity of oxotitanium phthalocyanine (TiOPc) doped with the modified SWNTswas investigated by xerographic photoinduced discharge method. The results showed that thephotosensitivity of the double-layered photoreceptor composed of the SWNTs/TiOPc composite ascharge generation material was higher than that of pristine TiOPc, and the sensitivity increased withthe content of modified SWNTs in the composites. It is the photoinduced charge transfer betweenTiOPc and SWNTs that contributes to the improved photosensitivity of the modified SWNTs/TiOPccomposites

Notes: Aluminum nitride-boron nitride (AlN/BN) composite ceramics were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The sintering behaviors of AlN/BN composites with 5~15% volume fraction of BN were studied. The influences of BN content, as well as the sintering temperature on the density, microstructure, mechanical strength, thermal conductivity and machinability of the composites were also investigated. The results showed that the full densification of AlN/BN composite ceramics could be realized by SPS technique at the temperature no higher than 1800℃for 3 minutes. The thermal conductivity of AlN/BN composites is in the range of 66~79W/mK, and AlN/BN composites can be cut or drilled by carbides or even steel tools when BN content is 15% volume fraction. The mechanical strength of AlN/BN composites is about 330MPa and is not remarkably affected by the addition of BN. The improvement of mechanical properties of AlN/BN composite ceramics is due to the fine and homogenous microstructure developed in the SPS process

Notes: In the present work, investigation of the functional property of piezoelectric gradedmonomorph actuator systems is presented. The functional graded actuators were fabricated byelectrophoretic deposition (EPD) using pure PZT and doped PZT materials. Actuators developedhave shown gradual gradient variation in microstructure. It is noted that trend in microstructuralgradient does not represent similar trend in piezoelectric property gradient. The displacement ofmicrostructural graded and both piezoelectric and microstructural graded actuators were measured. The results show that the gradient distribution of the piezoelectric properties is important toimprove the electromechanical performance of the actuator

Notes: In this paper, the mechanical behavior of Ni-base single crystals joint created by TLP bonding is presented. Experimental study has been performed on the TLP single crystal under loading conditions of static uniaxial tension, creep and Three-points-bending (T-P-B) at temperature of 850 ℃. Specimens made of the base material, Ni-base single crystal specimens without bonding, were also tested under the same loading conditions. The mechanical behaviors of TLP single crystal is compared to the behaviors of base material. It was found that the static strength of the TLP specimens with the boundary normal to the tensile direction was 63% of the strength of the base material. The creep strength and the fracture ductile strength was more than 57% and 55% of that of the single crystal base material, respectively. The macro and micro graphs of fracture surfaces of specimens indicated that the fracture modes of the samples were brittle fracture
