    Notes: Mycobacterium tuberculosis can not only neutralize immune effector functions, but also has the ability to modulate host-signalling cascades involved in the development of these responses. The 19 kDa antigen (Rv3763), a lipoprotein of M. tuberculosis, elicits high levels of interleukin (IL)-12 from macrophages in addition to its powerful immunomodulatory properties, leading to suppression of antigen-presentation signalling cascades. The present study was aimed at analysing the effect of overexpression of this antigen on the immunostimulatory properties of M. bovis Bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG). We have constructed a recombinant BCG strain (rBCG19N) producing higher levels of the 19 kDa antigen in both the cytoplasmic (approximately eightfold) and extracellular (approximately fivefold) fractions as compared to the wildtype BCG. Immunization of mice with rBCG19N elicited high levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and relatively low levels of IL-10 against the purified 19 kDa antigen. However, in response to total BCG sonicate, mice immunized with rBCG19N produced significantly high levels of IL-10 with relatively very low levels of IFN-γ. This polarization of the host immune responses towards T-helper 2 subtype resulted in complete abrogation of the protective efficacy of BCG, when rBCG19N was used as a live vaccine against M. tuberculosis challenge in guinea pigs.

    Notes: : Tylose gel (the Karlsruhe test substance) is a meat analog commonly used for studying heat transfer during freezing and thawing operations. It has thermal properties similar to lean beef, which are well defined in literature; however, moisture diffusivities for Tylose gel are not available in the literature. In this article, the mass transfer properties of Tylose were investigated. This included determining a moisture isotherm for Tylose and measuring effective moisture diffusivity as a function of temperature using 2 different methods: a drying method and a concentration-distance method. The moisture isotherm was fit best using the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) equation. The resulting moisture diffusivities were fit to an Arrhenius model for temperature dependence from 2.5 °C to 12 °C. The moisture diffusivities measured for Tylose ranged from 4.00 × 10-11 to 9.75 × 10-11 m2/ s, depending on temperature. The drying method resulted in moisture diffusivities that were found to have higher dependence on temperature than when the concentration-distance method was used. The concentration-distance method gave much more variation among measurements.

    Notes: Standard domestic refrigerators store food between 1 and 5C (33.8–41F). A manufacturer recently developed a refrigerator capable of storing food in the “ultra-chilled region” (−3 to −7C) and claimed that storage of fresh meat in this region better maintains quality. To understand quality in terms of chemical reaction rates, microbial growth and texture and flavor changes, three common consumer meat products – steak, ground beef patty and salmon – were stored for a selected period of time, as determined by microbial testing, in five refrigerator models with different environmental conditions (constant temperature and temperature fluctuation). At the end of the storage period, consumer panelists assessed the quality of the cooked samples by ranking them according to preference. In addition, instruments were used to measure the color and shear cutting force (for steak only) of each sample. Results from the consumer Ranking R-Index Test indicate that panelists preferred samples stored under or near ultra-chilled conditions rather than samples stored under standard refrigerated conditions. The ultra-chilled samples not only had higher panelist rankings and more favorable comments, but also had lower microbial aerobic plate counts. The instrument readings, however, highly varied and did not correlate well with sensory data.

    Notes: This paper discusses the trends and developments in intelligent CAD of progressive die. The research efforts reviewed reveal the growing importance and relevancy of particular AI techniques for automation of progressive die design activities. Based on the knowledge base approach of AI, an intelligent CAD framework is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed intelligent CAD framework comprises different knowledge base modules for automating progressive die design process. The procedure for the development of various knowledge base modules of the proposed intelligent CAD system is described through module CCKBS which has been designed for assessing manufacturability of sheet metal parts. An illustrative example has been included for demonstrating the usefulness of the developed module CCKBS. The system framework is flexible enough to accommodate new acquired knowledge for each module. The modules of the system framework are implementable on a PC and thus can be affordable by small and medium size enterprises

    Notes: This paper presents an intelligent system for modeling and material selection forprogressive die components. The proposed system comprises of two modules, namely INTPMODand MATSEL. The first module INTPMOD is constructed for modeling of die block, stripper plate,punch plate, back-up plate, die-set and die assembly of progressive die automatically in the drawingeditor of AutoCAD. The second module MATSEL is developed for material selection forprogressive die components. Both the modules are coded in AutoLISP language and designed to beloaded into the prompt area of AutoCAD. An illustrative example is included to demonstrate theusefulness of the system modules. The proposed system is implemented on a PC having AutoCADsoftware and its low cost of implementation makes it affordable for small and medium-size sheetmetal industries
