Notes: Background: During the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in the Spring 2003, we employed the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat patients with SARS in China-Japan Friendship Hospital. Methods: According to our clinical observation with the "Pestilence" theory of TCM, the progress of SARS can be divided into five stages, i.e. the latent stage, the febrile stage, the cough and asthmatic stage, the prostration stage, and the recovery stage. TCM formulae were employed for the different stages of SARS. The time of allaying fever, the average absorption day of pulmonary infiltration, and the increase in white blood cell counts were used for evaluation of the treatment. Results: For those 4 patients with fever at the time of admitting to hospital, the time of allaying fever was 2, 3, 6 and 7 days respectively after the treatment of TCM. For 11 patients, the mean absorption time of chest infiltration was 14.56±6.71 days from the range of 5 days to 25 days. In addition, after treatment with TCM, total count of white blood cells and lymphocytes were all within normal range. Conclusion: Treatment with traditional Chinese medicine can be one of the choices for patients with SARS.

Notes: A new method is proposed for machinability evaluation of machinable ceramic materials. The relation of machinability attributes is modeled as a digraph, and machinability attribute matrix is defined. Machinability indexes are calculated with permanent function of the matrix, and machinabilities of machinable ceramics are ranked. Five composites consisting of CePO4 and zirconia were fabricated, measured and drilled with tungsten-cobalt carbide bits. Mechanical propertyparameters of Ce-ZrO2/CePO4 composites, including Vickers hardness, fracture toughness and Elastic modulus, are selected as machinability attributes. The experimental results of material removal rates are consistent with the ranking of machinability index values of Ce-ZrO2/CePO4 ceramics. The machinabilities of Ce-ZrO2/CePO4 ceramics improve with the increase of CePO4 proportions. Machinability of machinable ceramics can be evaluated with digraph method

Notes: Grinding wheel passivation is an inevitable phenomenon during grinding process. It hasimportant guiding significance for the formulation of grinding technique to unveil the passivation ruleand generation mechanism. Taking grinding efficiency as evaluation indicator, the passivation curveof grinding wheel during full passivation period under the constant-force grinding condition isestablished through experiments in this dissertation, which is divided into three stages according topassivation speeds and passivation patters, i.e. early passivation stage, stable passivation stage andsharp passivation stage. Of which, the passivation speed is the slowest but with the highest grindingefficiency in early passivation stage. The change of passivation curve with the time is a process fromconcave to convex, which is totally different from the wearing process of grinding wheel in this stage. With combination of experiment conditions and wearing characteristics of grinding wheel, thepassivation rule and its generation reasons are discussed deeply. Furthermore the exponentialfunction y = abx is adopted to make fitting for passivation curve based on the scatter plot of stablepassivation stage and regression equation is derived through the fitting result of origin thus to testifythe correctness of the inference

Notes: Ceramic column and metal sleeve are often used together by interference fit. The stressdistribution in brittle ceramics is different from that in metal. Two important factors for their connectionstrength such as interference value and the length of envelope surface are discussed in this paper. Theresults showed that interference value is the decisional factor for the strength of interference fit betweenceramic column and metal sleeve, while the length of envelope surface impacts it slightly

Notes: The grinding wheel in the grinding process will surely become duller and duller. To findthe reason for it is beneficial to optimize grinding process. The paper draws the graph of thePassivation process of grinding wheel by carrying grinding experiment in the condition ofinvariable grinding force. The curve can be divided into three parts according to the Passivation ratei.e. initial dull stages, regular dullness stages and rapid dullness stages. In the initial stages, thePassivation rate is lowest and the grinding efficiency is the greatest. The curve figure changes fromconcave to protruding, which is greatly different from wear curve of grinding process

Notes: Based on systematic engineering theory and method, interpretative structural model ofceramic grindability system was set up. Property parameters, grinding parameters and grindabilityindexes were selected as system elements. The adjacency matrix between system elements wasconstructed. The reachability matrix was calculated according to adjacency matrix. By calculationof reachability matrix and classification, interpretative structural model of the ceramic grindabilitysystem was obtained. The system model could describe the relationship between the ceramicgrindability and system elements. The grindability system model also provides a fundamentaltheoretical reference for the research on the grindability of ceramic materials. The weight of eachinfluencing factor of ceramic grindability can be calculated by applying the system model. Thegrindability of ceramic materials can be evaluated objectively and comprehensively

Notes: Mathematical evaluation model for ceramic grindability was presented based on principalcomponents analysis (PCA) method. Sample matrix was constituted with influence factors ofceramic grindability. Principal components and weight vectors were determined through calculationof eigenvalues and eigenvectors of correlation matrix, which was deduced from sample matrix.Comprehensive values could be obtained through eigenvectors and weights vectors. Seven ceramicswere selected as evaluation example. Material property parameters including hardness, fracturetoughness, Young’s modulus and bending strength were selected as influence factors of ceramicgrindability.[removed info]According to the comprehensive evaluation values, grindability rank of seven materialsfrom better to worse was B4C, sintering SiC, high-purity Al2O3, hot-pressed SiC, sintering Si3N4,hot-pressed Si3N4 and Y-TZP. Moreover, the determination of weight vectors could offer referencefor other comprehensive evaluation methods. Research results suggest that PCA is a reasonable andavailable method to determine the rank of ceramic grindability

Notes: The compressing piston and cylinder of refrigerating compressor frequently come into failuresas anti-wearability for metal material is weak. Engineering ceramics is appreciated by designers thanks toits excellent performances. However, it is difficult to machining material because of high hardness. TheFEA modules for displacement and stress distributions of compressing piston and cylinder under declaredrunning conditions are established based on the theories of elasto-plasticity and aerodynamics, whichreveal the optimal precision conjugation clearance dependence of pressure distributions regularitybetween friction couple. Based on the FEA analytical results, the feasibility of replacing metal materialwith Si3N4 ceramics in the friction couple manufacture is researched. Special clamps have been designedto guarantee the superficial quality as mirror surface and tolerances of form and position, technologicalprocedures are programmed, and with satisfactory machining effect

Notes: This paper carries out grinding efficiency experiments on various formulas composed oflong carbon chain alcohol and halogenated hydrocarbons with the first principle of grinding fluid asmain evaluating index and finds via infrared spectrum testing that the conjugating ways oflubricating films between alcohol-type grinding fluid and ceramics is based on chemical adsorptionor hydrogen bonding adsorption and generates alkoxy silane or polyalkoxy silane with perfectanti-friction action under the condition of grinding high temperature. With adding of halogenatedhydrocarbons, it can further make grinding fluid with perfect extreme pressure property andimproves grinding efficiency. Furthermore, this dissertation firstly introduces heat capacity asanalysis means and discusses the influential factors on the removal rate of ceramics materials whenusing abovementioned grinding fluid. It is shown from the result that the material removal ratewhen silicon nitride ceramics grinding will increase with the augmentation of heat capacity
