    Notes: The lightest density of Mg has stimulated renewed interest in Mg based alloys forapplications in the automotive, aerospace and communications industries. However, Mg in the pureform has relatively low strength, limited ductility and is susceptible to corrosion. Great efforts havebeen made to improve the mechanical properties of Mg alloys. Alloying Mg with other elements isone of the most important methods. An important class of Mg alloys is the Mg-Zn-RE system (RE =rare earth elements). In recent few decades, a series of new Mg-Zn-RE system alloys have beenobtained, and detailed the structure and mechanical properties of the alloys. In this paper, the structureand mechanical properties of the Mg-Zn-RE alloys have been summarized. It showed that these alloyshave high strength and they are prospected to be widely used in the future

    Notes: In this study, quality of Man-tou, the Chinese traditional steamed bread during storage was studied. Values for water retention capacity, total water solubles, soluble starch, and soluble amylose and amylopectin of Man-tou decreased with storage time. Results showed that hardness, chewiness and gumminess of Man-tou increased, while, springiness cohesiveness and resilience decreased along with prolonged storage time (p〈0.05). Sensory evaluation results showed that all sensory rating of Man-tou, including softness, stickiness, cohesiveness, elasticity, taste and total score, dropped drastically within 24 h of storage time (p〈0.05). Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) was used to determine crystalline structure of amylopectin in Man-tou, and the value for enthalpy of crystallization was found increased with storage time. Amylopectin crystallization was significantly associated to Man-tou firming (p〈0.01).

    Notes: In this study, microemulsion cross-linking treatment was used on food grade potato and maize starches for preparing micro starch particles. Laser diffraction technique was introduced to measure the particle size characteristics, including the median particle diameter (d 50), surface area mean diameter D [3, 2], volume mean diameter D [4, 3] and specific surface area of micro potato and maize starch particles. The volume distributions and number distributions were also analyzed using Mastersizer 2000 Software. The d 50, D [3, 2], D [4, 3] of the potato starch granules were reduced significantly (p 〈 0.05) after the microemulsion cross-linking reaction and ball-milling treatment. However, the microemulsion cross-linking treatment did not produce significant changes in the particle size characteristics of the maize starch samples.

    Notes: The physical properties of fibered flaxseed were investigated within moisture content varying from 6.21 to 16.29%. The length, width, thickness and geometric mean diameter increased from 4.20 to 4.44mm, 1.99 to 2.13mm, 0.91 to 0.95mm, and 1.95 to 2.06mm, respectively in the moisture content range. One thousand seed weight increased linearly from 4.22 to 4.62g. The bulk density decreased from 726.783 to 611.872kg/m3, while the true density increased from 1165.265 to 1289.341kg/m3 in the moisture content range. The porosity values of flaxseed increased linearly from 37.67 to 52.54%. The highest static coefficient of friction was found on the plywood surface, while the lowest on the stainless steel surface. The static coefficient of friction increased from 0.467 to 0.972, 0.442 to 0.864, 0.492 to 0.927, and 0.490 to 0.845 for plywood, stainless steel, aluminum sheet and galvanized iron, respectively. The angle of repose increased linearly from 25.7° to 33.8° in the moisture content range. The results are necessary for design of equipment to handling, transportation, processing, and the storage of flaxseed.

    Notes: Dynamic viscoelastic properties of brown rice kernels were investigated using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). In order to meet the sample requirements for the DMA and prevent moisture loss of rice kernels during the DMA measurements, necessary precautions were taken. To prevent moisture loss of rice kernels during the DMA measurements at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 120 degrees centigrade, rice kernels were wrapped with a thin layer of sealing film. Then the wrapped rice kernels were additionally covered with an aluminum foil. Two ends of the wrapped brown rice kernels were cut with a razor blade; subsequently both ends of the cut rice kernels were filed using fine sandpaper to produce near cylindrical rice kernels with parallel ends. The storage modulus of the rice kernels decreased with increasing temperature and moisture content. The loss modulus and the tan delta (loss factor) of the rice kernels as a function of temperature showed clear peaks, which are associated with the glass transition of rice kernels. Two rice varieties had been investigated, and the results showed that the dynamic viscoelastic properties of these rice samples were not significantly different. The glass transition temperatures for the long-grain rice kernels with the moisture contents of 17.4, 13.8, and 10.9 wt.% were determined as 45, 58, and 66 degrees centigrade, respectively.

    Notes: Background:  Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease with different clinical presentations that can be classified as reticular, atrophic or erosive. Although OLP is a relatively common disorder, the reports comprising large numbers of OLP patients with specific character are lacking in the literature. The purpose of this paper was to describe the clinical characteristics of OLP in 674 Chinese patients.Methods:  A total of 674 charts of patients with histologically confirmed OLP were collected from Stomatological Hospital of Wuhan University between 1963 and 2003.Results:  Of the 674 patients, 65.9% were women and 34.1% were men. The most common clinical presentation was the reticular type (51.3%), and symptomatic OLP was noted in 67.5% of the patients, mainly in those with the erosive form. The erosive presentations showed significantly longer duration, more sites affected and a much greater old patients predominance than reticular or atrophic ones. About 90.9% of the patients had multiple oral sites of involvement and isolated lower lip lichen planus were observed in 60 cases (8.9%) and isolated gingiva lichen in only one case (0.2%). Skin involvement of lichen planus was found in 11.4% of patients. No statistically significant differences could be identified between OLP and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, smoking or alcohol use. Precipitating factors that resulted in an exacerbation of the disease were frequently noted and included foods, stress, dental cusp and poor oral hygiene. The transformation of OLP into malignancy was observed in four patients at sites previously diagnosed by clinical examination as erosive or atrophic lichen planus.Conclusions:  Patients with OLP in China usually present with distinctive clinical morphology and characteristic distribution and few may display lesions with a confusing array of forms mimicking other diseases. A long time follow up is of utmost importance to detect its malignant transformation.

    Notes: 1. The β-adrenoceptor antagonist carvedilol reverses cardiac dysfunction in the failing heart. A recent study showed that β-adrenoceptor antagonists indirectly normalize Ca2+-regulatory proteins. The relationship between these two phenomena and the suitable dosage of carvedilol remains unclear.2. We investigated the change in left ventricular (LV) remodelling and function in a rat model of heart failure due to myocardial infarction (MI) with or without carvedilol (30 or 2 mg/kg per day) treatment for 6 weeks. The expression of mRNA and proteins of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) and phospholamban (PLB) in cardiomyocytes was also measured.3. There was significant LV remodelling and cardiac contractile dysfunction in MI rats. The expression of SERCA mRNA and protein were downregulated (P 〈 0.01), but the expression of PLB mRNA and protein were upregulated (P 〈 0.01) in MI rats compared with sham-operated rats. After treatment with carvedilol, LV remodelling and cardiac contractile dysfunction were clearly improved. Low-dose carvedilol was better at improving some parameters of LV remodelling and function than the high dose. Carvedilol partially restored the low expression of SERCA (P 〈 0.05), but had no effect on PLB expression (P 〉 0.05). Moreover, low-dose carvedilol induced a more significant improvement in SERCA expression than did the high dose (P 〈 0.05).4. The results of the present study suggest that carvedilol is effective in improving LV remodelling and cardiac contractile dysfunction after MI. This may be related to the normalization of SERCA expression.
