Notes: Abstract— Glucose metabolism in the superior cervical ganglion for calves has been studied by incubating slices with [1-14C]-, [6-14C]- and [U-14C]-labelled glucose at 37°C and pH 7.4. Glucose utilization and the metabolic partitioning of glucose carbon in products during different incubation periods ranging from 5 to 60 min were determined by isotopic methods.Separation and identification of labelled compounds have been achieved by anion and cation exchange chromatography as well as by TLC and enzymatic analyses. From the data obtained a carbon balance could be constructed showing lactate to be the major product of glucose metabolism followed by CO2 and amino acids. Measuring the release of 14CO2 from differently 4C-labelled glucose, the existence of an active pentose phosphate pathway in the ganglion could be demonstrated although this pathway seems to contribute only to a small extent to glucose metabolism. The marked decrease of the C-U: C-6 and the C-U:C-1 ratios in 14CO2 observed in the course of incubation is discussed in terms of a time-dependent change in the rate of synthesis of amino acids which are directly connected with intermediates of the citric acid cycle.

Notes: [Auszug] Carcinogenic events are thought not to take place on the surface of the plastic insert but rather in connexion with the tissue capsule3 which gradually builds up as a foreign body reaction. This communication presents evidence that 1-8 months before a tumour appears in mice, the premalignant cells ...

Notes: [Auszug] A group of more than 50 guinea-pigs was hyperimmun-zed against established human cell strains with identical antigenic composition as determined by immunodiffusion tests. Injections were administered intraperitoneally, intramuscularly (with Freund's complete adjuvant) and subcutaneously over a ...

Notes: Summary Oxalic, glyoxylic, and glycollic acid were determined in rat liver and kidney after injection with [U-14C]-xylitol or [U-14C]-glucose. Neither glucose nor xylitol led to the formation of oxalic and glyoxylic acid, yet glycollic acid was found in both tissues after injection with xylitol. Possible pathways leading from xylitol to glycollic acid are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. Washed human erythrocytes metabolize 1,14μMol xylitol in 120 min under the following experimental conditions: pH 7.4 and 37° C. 2. The levels of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate and ATP decrease during the incubation with xylitol. This decrease is not a specific effect of xylitol, but depends on the amount of C-atoms taken up. This could be shown in control experiments with fructose and glucose as substrates given separated or in combination with xylitol. The highest uptake of C-atoms has been observed with glucose plus xylitol as substrate. 3. 99% of the metabolized xylitol was recovered in the products lactate, Co2 and D-xylulose. 4. There was no measurable oxalate production from xylitol.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1. Gewaschene, menschliche Erythrozyten verstoffwechseln unter experimentellen Bedingungen (pH 7,4, 37° C) 1,14μMol Xylit in 120 min. 2.

Notes: Abstract UV-spectra of foil-excited Si ions accelerated to 20 MeV show 120 known lines of Si VIII-XIV and about 150 additional lines in the region 8–61 nm. 28 new classifications are proposed. Then=2 level scheme of Si X is revised. Two transitions are reassigned.

Notes: Abstract. Fe/Al multilayers are prepared by crossed-beam pulsed laser deposition and investigated by Rutherford backscattering, conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results are compared to purely ballistic simulations of the deposition process using the TRIDYN4.0 code. It is found that the intermixing of adjacent layers must be described in terms of ballistic mixing followed by chemical mixing. The phase formation in the transition layer between adjacent layers follows the non-equilibrium behavior of Fe/Al in analogy to investigations on mechanically alloyed and ion-beam-mixed Fe/Al. In Fe-rich areas a bcc solid solution is formed. In Al-rich environment an amorphous phase is observed.
