    Notizen: Single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles protruding from the SWNT layers on self-aligned Sn apexes were brought to a distance of 30 nm by a scanning tunneling microscope inside a transmission electron microscope. A straight bundle on the tip could be observed in situ in contact electrostatically with a looped bundle on the sample by applying tip bias voltages above 2.0 V. The bundles were welded at the nanometer size contact area by local Joule heating. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We demonstrate room-temperature deep ultraviolet (UV) current injection emission from Al0.03Ga0.97N/Al0.25Ga0.75N multiquantum-well (MQW) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) fabricated by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The electroluminescence (EL) peaked at 333.0 nm under pulsed current injection. To our knowledge, this is the shortest wavelength ever reported for nitride QW LEDs. A Mg-doped GaN/AlGaN superlattice (SL) hole conductive layer was used as a p-type layer in order to enable current injection into such deep-level AlGaN QWs. We observed single-peak near band-edge emission from the QWs. The output intensity did not saturate up to current densities of 0.33 kA/cm2. We obtained a reasonable well width dependence on the EL peak wavelength of Al0.01Ga0.99N MQW LEDs, which confirms that the main emission peak originates from the QW regions. These results revealed that the Mg-doped SL hole conductive layers are highly suitable for application to GaN-based UV light-emitting devices. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were grown in the tunneling gap of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). We could observe their growth processes in situ by operating the STM in a transmission electron microscope. The STM tip and sample were covered by graphite layers. The tip was lightly touched to the sample and subsequently retracted. Occasionally, a carbon nanobridge was generated between the tip and the sample. The bridge had the shape of SWNT at the tip side. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract Linear system analysis was applied to calcium channel gating on the biological membrane. The conformational changes of calcium channel gating were expressed by an allosteric enzyme model composed of four subunits with corresponding voltage sensor molecules. The rate constants for the channel states transitions were obtained from reported biological experiments and simulation. The linear system analysis disclosed that the system is unstable and uncontrollable. Combinations of each input site and output of the channel gating state for the impulse responses and the singular values of the system showed that the potency of any particular input site for evoking impulse responses at any particular channel state and singular value is not equivalent among the channel states but favor for large numbers of voltage sensors and open channel states. Allosteric effects for modifying the concerted cooperative properties of the calcium channel have a significant influence on the singular values of the system. System optimization improved the system properties of the calcium channel and will be available for evaluating the economical channel gating of the biological membrane and artificial membrane.

    Notizen: A finite element method for contact problems in crack mechanics is developed on the basis of the penalty function method. The method is successfully applied to three important problems in fracture mechanics: a crack propagated from a pin hole, a two-point supported specimen with an edge crack loaded by a stamp, and a thick plate with a through-wall crack under bending force.
