    Notes: The high-brilliance synchrotron radiation source BESSY II will provide space for the installation of 14 insertion devices. At the time of writing (July 1997), eight insertion devices are funded. The first light for use by scientists will be available in January 1999. The undulators are designed for a scanning operation in parallel with the monochromator. This modus requires tight tolerances concerning the drive system. The first insertion device to be installed, a U-49 undulator, has been assembled and magnetically measured. The r.m.s. phase error is 2°. An endpole configuration using coils with less than 64 amp-turns makes the angular kick smaller than ±3 µrad over a gap range 15–50 mm.

    Notes: Abstract: We study the influence of a tunnel barrier on the quantum transport through a circular cavity. Our analysis in terms of classical trajectories shows that the semiclassical approaches developed for ballistic transport can be adapted to deal with the case where tunneling is present. Peaks in the Fourier transform of the energy-dependent transmission and reflection spectra exhibit a nonmonotonic behaviour as a function of the barrier height in the quantum mechanical numerical calculations. Semiclassical analysis provides a simple qualitative explanation of this behaviour, as well as a quantitative agreement with the exact calculations. The experimental relevance of the classical trajectories in mesoscopic and microwave systems is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The elastic and inelastic scattering of12C on12C has been measured in the angular range between 2.8° and 70.4° in the c.m. system atE Lab =300 MeV. Optical model calculations have been performed with Woods-Saxon and folded potentials, the ground state and the first 2+-state were coupled in the calculations. The large cross sections of the elastic scattering at large angles is related to the nuclear rainbow scattering, which is centered at about 56°. This requires a potential depth of 100 MeV at a distance of 3 fm, the fit to the data is sensitive down to this region. The calculations with the folded potential show a better agreement with the data than those with the Woods-Saxon shape. The total reaction cross section of 1,420 mb, obtained from the optical model analysis, corresponds to the geometrical value; no transparency is observed.

    Notes: Abstract Using a Q3D magnetic spectrometer the elastic and inelastic scattering of12C on88Sr and the neutron pick-up (12C,13C) has been studied. The spin alignment of the inelastically excited 2+ state of12C (4.43 MeV) has been deduced from the line shapes broadened by theγ-decay in flight. Thus for eachm-substate a full angular distribution was obtained. Them=1 substate shows a shifted interference minimum, which is explained by the different strength of the Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes in them-substates. The analysis of the data on elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, alignment and the neutron transfer can be described consistently with one choice of the optical model parameters.

    Notes: Abstract: We introduce phase space concepts to describe quantum states in a disordered system. The merits of an inverse participation ratio defined on the basis of the Husimi function are demonstrated by a numerical study of the Anderson model in one, two, and three dimensions. Contrary to the inverse participation ratios in real and momentum space, the corresponding phase space quantity allows for a distinction between the ballistic, diffusive, and localized regimes on a unique footing and provides valuable insight into the structure of the eigenstates.

    Notes: Abstract: In the one-dimensional Anderson model the eigenstates are localized for arbitrarily small amounts of disorder. In contrast, the Aubry-André model with its quasiperiodic potential shows a transition from extended to localized states. The difference between the two models becomes particularly apparent in phase space where Heisenberg's uncertainty relation imposes a finite resolution. Our analysis points to the relevance of the coupling between momentum eigenstates at weak potential strength for the delocalization of a quantum particle.

    Notes: Abstract. We study a method to determine the residual conductance of a correlated system by means of the ground-state properties of a large ring composed of the system itself and a long non-interacting lead. The transmission probability through the interacting region, and thus its residual conductance, is deduced from the persistent current induced by a flux threading the ring. Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques are employed to obtain numerical results for one-dimensional systems of interacting spinless fermions. As the flux dependence of the persistent current for such a system demonstrates, the interacting system coupled to an infinite non-interacting lead behaves as a non-interacting scatterer, but with an interaction dependent elastic transmission coefficient. The scaling to large lead sizes is discussed in detail as it constitutes a crucial step in determining the conductance. Furthermore, the method, which so far had been used at half filling, is extended to arbitrary filling and also applied to disordered interacting systems, where it is found that repulsive interaction can favor transport.
