Notes: The initial operation of the first three insertion devices in ELETTRA is described, including the effects on the electron beam and analysis of the first spectral measurements. Some details are also given about compensation of the ID effects, and operation of the ID control system and vacuum chamber protection system. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Deeply buried boron doped layers are realized in single crystal diamond using MeV ion implantation. Contact to the buried layers is accomplished using pulsed focused laser irradiation which is selectively absorbed in the implanted layer to form a graphite column up to the surface. The contacts are ohmic over a wide range of applied voltage. Implantation induced defects that are responsible for compensation of the acceptors are identified. It is found that removal of these defects requires annealing temperatures of about 1450 °C, but once these defects are removed the buried B doped layer displays excellent activation of the acceptors with an activation energy of 0.372 eV. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present recent results obtained by the European Free Electron Laser (FEL) project at the ELETTRA storage ring. Coherent and tunable light was produced in the ultraviolet down to below 190 nm, the shortest lasing wavelength obtained so far with a FEL oscillator. The performance of the FEL is described, together with a series of technical solutions that have been adopted on it. These solutions increase its validity as a source for applications, and demonstrate the potential of FEL oscillators to become sources with features in the vacuum ultraviolet. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The background to the widespread adoption by Australian public trading enterprises of a deprival value variant of current cost accounting reflects successive efforts to establish demanding rate of return targets, or to legitimise price increases, or to monitor the financial performance of PTEs on a national basis. The experience of three public utilities in implementing CCA is reviewed. This experience suggests that CCA valuation of infrastructure (using deprival or optimized deprival values) is unable to deliver financial data to permit valid cross-sectional and longitudinal comparisons of performance. Issues raised during the 1970s and 1980s debates about CCA were either ignored or overlooked.

Notes: Aims. To assess the prevalence of inhalant use among urban American Indian youth and to examine differences between inhalant users and non-users. Design. Baseline (T1) self-report questionnaires completed in 5th-6th grade and at seven annual follow-up assessments (T2-T8). Settings. Seattle metropolitan area. Participants. Two hundred and twenty-four Indian youth. Measurements. Youth-completed measures of substance use, ethnic self-identity, involvement in traditional Indian activities, family conflict, family history of alcoholism, peer and sibling deviance, self-esteem, delinquency, aggression, anxiety, depression, sensation seeking, conduct disorder and alcohol dependence. Findings. Lifetime inhalant use was reported by 12.3% of adolescents. At T1, inhalant users had significantly lower perceived self-worth and average annual household incomes and significantly greater density of familial alcoholism and expression of aggressive and delinquent conduct than non-users. Aggressive behavior was the most important T1 predictor of inhalant use. Lifetime conduct and alcohol dependence disorders were 3.3 and 2.6 times more prevalent among inhalant users than non-users at T5. Inhalant users had more extensive deviant peer networks, were more sensation-seeking, and evidenced lower perceived self-worth than non-users at T8. Conclusions. Inhalant use was less prevalent in this particular sample of urban Indian adolescents than in most studies of reservation Indian youth. As with other studies of inhalant abuse, aggressive and delinquent males of low SES and low-perceived self-worth with family histories of alcohol dependence, were at highest risk for inhalant use.

Notes: Summary Oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTF) was compared with midazolam as a premedicant in a prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. Eighty children (ASA grade 1or 2, aged 3–9 years) who presented for tonsillectomy were randomly allocated to receive either 2.5 ml OTF (15–20 µg.kg−1) in a lollipop format and 0.5 ml.kg−1 placebo syrup, or midazolam syrup (0.5 mg.kg−1) and a placebo lollipop (2.5 ml). The acceptability of sedation, anxiety and compliance with anaesthetic induction were assessed. The children were given an ‘emergence’ score for their recovery. Analgesia requirements, the incidence of vomiting, itching and any behavioural changes were assessed for 6 h postoperatively. Oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate was as effective as midazolam in aiding compliance with anaesthesia, but is significantly better in its appeal to children (p 〈 0.001) and emergence (p 〈 0.001) characteristics. In conclusion, OTF may be particularly useful as a premedicant in paediatric practice.
