Notes: We demonstrate a self-assembling method for growing semiconductor quantum dots into ordered lattices. The quantum dot nucleation and positioning into lattices was achieved using a periodic subsurface stressor lattice. Three different two-dimensional (2D) square lattices are demonstrated. The unit cell dimensions, orientation, and the number of quantum dots in the basis are tunable. We find that the 2D lattice can be replicated at periodic intervals along the growth direction to form a three-dimensional (3D) lattice of quantum dots. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract : The behavioral effects of cocaine are enhanced following constitutive deletion of the serotonin1B receptor. The neural substrates mediating the enhanced response to cocaine are unknown. The present studies determined whether basal dopamine dynamics or cocaine-evoked dopamine levels are altered in projection areas of mesostriatal or mesoaccumbens dopamine neurons following serotonin1B receptor deletion. Male wild-type and serotonin1B knockout mice were implanted with microdialysis guide cannulas aimed at the dorsal striatum or nucleus accumbens. The zero net flux method of quantitative microdialysis was used to quantify basal extracellular dopamine concentrations (DAext) and the extraction fraction of dopamine (Ed), which provides an index of dopamine uptake. Conventional microdialysis techniques were used to quantify cocaine (0, 5.0, and 20.0 mg/kg)-evoked dopamine overflow. Basal DAext and Ed did not differ in striatum of wild-type and knockout mice. Similarly, cocaine-stimulated dopamine overflow did not differ between genotype. The basal Ed did not differ in the nucleus accumbens of wild-type and knockout mice. However, DAext was significantly elevated in the nucleus accumbens of knockout mice. Cocaine-evoked dopamine overflow (nM) was also enhanced in the nucleus accumbens of knockout mice. However, the cocaine-induced increase in dopamine levels, relative to basal values, did not differ between genotype. These data demonstrate that deletion of the serotonin1B receptor is associated with increases in basal DAext in the nucleus accumbens. This increase is not associated with an alteration in Ed, suggesting increased basal dopamine release in these animals. It is hypothesized that these alterations in presynaptic neuronal activity are a compensatory response to constitutive deletion of the serotonin1B receptor and may contribute to the enhanced behavioral effects of psychostimulants observed in knockout mice.

Notes: When fabricating multilayers with brittle constituents, a prevalent design strategy is to choose fabrication conditions and thermal expansion coefficients that impose in-plane compression on the brittle layers. In such designs, a small zone of out-of-plane tension is induced at the edges that can cause cracks to form and extend, especially along the midplane. The associated stresses and energy release rates have been analyzed, revealing a fail-safe criterion, attributed to the existence of a maximum possible energy release rate, Gmax. Equating this maximum to the toughness defines a fail-safe parameter expressing the influence of the layer thickness, the misfit stress, and the toughness. When fail-safe designs cannot be realized, thin interlayers can be interposed in a manner that diminishes Gmax, broadening accessibility. The roles of misfit stress and interlayer thickness in attaining this condition are derived.

Notes: Abstract Two wheat cultivars, Hesheng 2 with large grain yield potential, and Shannong 505 with small grain yield potential, were used for investigating the responses of postanthesis photosynthesis, dry matter accumulation and allocation, and grain growth to source/sink changes. At the initial grain filling stage, Hesheng 2 was sensitive to source reduction leading to an increase of net photosynthetic rate (PN) by 10 %; however, little effect of sink reduction was observed. In Shannong 505, PN was obviously decreased by sink reduction, and changed a little after source reduction. At the rapid grain filling stage, Hesheng 2 was sensitive to both source and sink reduction resulting in the increase or decrease of PN, respectively. However, the response of PN in Shannong 505 to source/sink changes was similar to that in previous stage. The dry matter (DM) accumulation after anthesis was affected by source/sink changes. In Hesheng 2, the decrease in DM was higher than that in Shannong 505 after the same source or sink reduction. Source reduction caused a decrease in the allocation of DM to the sheath and stem, and promoted the reserve photosynthates to be reallocated to grain. The effect of sink reduction was contrary. The grain mass of Hesheng 2 was more easily regulated by source/sink changes than that of Shannong 505. The effect source/sink changes on grain mass was in order upper 〉 basal 〉 middle spikelets on spike. As for a spikelet, the effect was found mainly in the grain mass at the positions 3 and 4 from base of the spikelet.

Notes: Abstract Source-sink relationship, which was influenced by both genotype and environmental factors, contributed to the variation in photosynthesis and photosynthate partitioning of wheat. Source reduction by partial defoliation increased leaf net photosynthetic rate (PN), and sink reduction decreased PN of irrigated wheat. However, the change in PN varied among genotypes. Source reduction enhanced photosynthate translocation into grain in irrigated wheat. However, the enhancement was more evident in cv. Lumai 215953 than incv. Lumai 15. Sink reduction had little effect on the translocation of photosynthate into grain in cv. Lumai 15, but decreased the translocation of photosynthate into grain and increased it into stem in cv. Lumai 215953. In rainfed, non-irrigated wheat, the source or sink manipulation influenced PN only slightly. The source reduction decreased the partitioning of photosynthates into the upper parts (including grains) of plant. However, very little effects of sink reduction on the production of photosynthates occurred in rainfed wheat. This showed that grain sink size was not a factor limiting the production of photosynthates, but controlled the partitioning of photosynthates. Sink reduction decreased photosynthate translocation into grains, and increased it into upper parts of rainfed wheat plant.

Notes: Abstract. Self-aligned GaN nanowire quasi-arrays were synthesized on MgO crystal through a simple gas reaction method. They were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). FE-SEMimages showed that the product consisted of quasi-arrays of nanowires. XRD, EDX and HRTEM indicated that the nanowires were wurtzite GaN single crystals.
