Notes: Interfacial reactions between (100) InP and thin films of the transition metals Cr, Ni, Pt, and Ti have been studied. A thin layer of metal was deposited onto the InP substrates using e-beam evaporation and parts of the samples were then subjected to heat treatment in vacuum for 30 min at several temperatures up to 500 °C. Separate characterizations of the metal, In, and P depth distributions were carried out using mass and energy dispersive recoil spectrometry. The different crystalline phases observed were determined using x-ray diffraction. The near-noble metals (Ni, Pt) formed ternary phases, while Ti and Cr formed phosphides. The phases formed were generally stable up to 500 °C with the major exception being Pt where the ternary phase decomposed to form PtIn2, PtP2, and Pt3In7. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: CoSi2 exhibits the features of low resistivity and stability at elevated temperatures which make it interesting to employ for metallization on GaAs. The interfacial reactions in GaAs samples with thin film overlayers of Si and Co [Si(220 nm)/Co(50 nm)/(〈100〉-GaAs)] were studied using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and mass and energy dispersive recoil spectrometry. Samples were vacuum furnace annealed for time periods between 1 and 8 h at temperatures ranging from 300 to 700 °C. It was found that a CoSi2 layer formed without observable reaction with the substrate at 500 °C and above. The excess Si (Si/Co atomic ratio of 2.41) remained near the surface as elemental Si and as SiO2 for the 500 and 600 °C annealings. For the 700 °C annealing the excess near-surface Si was not observed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There has been substantial interest in mindfulness as an approach to reduce cognitive vulnerability to stress and emotional distress in recent years. However, thus far mindfulness has not been defined operationally. This paper describes the results of recent meetings held to establish a consensus on mindfulness and to develop conjointly a testable operational definition. We propose a two-component model of mindfulness and specify each component in terms of specific behaviors, experiential manifestations, and implicated psychological processes. We then address issues regarding temporal stability and situational specificity and speculate on the conceptual and operational distinctiveness of mindfulness. We conclude this paper by discussing implications for instrument development and briefly describing our own approach to measurement.

Notes: In this study, I examined emotional modulation of the eyeblink, skin conductance, and cardiac responses to an acoustic startle (103 dB[A] white noise) probe. Twenty-five female and 17 male undergraduates imagined pleasant, neutral, and fearful situations in a tone-cued imagery procedure. Both the eyeblink and skin conductance responses to startle probes were potentiated (larger magnitude, shorter latency) during fear as compared with neutral and pleasant imagery. The amount of emotional modulation in these two response systems was significantly correlated both between and within subjects. The startle probe interrupted ongoing cardiac deceleration during the imagery task, but this interruption was not related to the emotional content of imagery.

Notes: The reliability of resting electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectra was assessed for 49 normal and 44 schizophrenic subjects. We specifically examined internal consistency reliability to determine how much EEG data are necessary to ensure small measurement error. Twenty-one 8-s epochs of resting EEG were collected from each subject from site Cz. Epochs containing artifacts or blinks were eliminated. Power was computed in the bands delta (0.125–3 Hz), theta (3.125–8 Hz), alpha (8.125–13 Hz), betal (13.125–20 Hz), beta2 (20.125–25 Hz), and beta3 (25.125–30 Hz). Internal consistency was computed using coefficient alpha (Cronbach, 1951). Results for both groups indicated that eight artifact-free epochs of data were sufficient to give a coefficient alpha value of around .9. The schizophrenic and normal groups did not differ with respect to coefficient alpha. The proportion of artifacts in the data from the schizophrenics indicated that to obtain eight artifact-free epochs from members of each group, 40% more data would be required from the schizophrenics.

Notes: The startle reflex, facial electromyogram (EMG), and autonomic nervous system responses were examined during imagery varying in affective valence and arousal. Subjects (N= 48) imagined affective situations during tone-cued 8-strials. Startle blink magnitudes were larger and latencies faster during negatively valent than during positively valent conditions and during high-arousal than during low-arousal conditions. Greatest heart rate acceleration and fastest and largest skin conductance responses to startle probes occurred during high-arousal imagery. Zygomatic and orbicularis oculi facial muscle activities were higher during high-arousal imagery, whereas corrugator muscle activity was higher during low-arousal imagery. Zygomatic and corrugator activity also varied with emotional valence. The startle and facial EMG responses are most parsimoniously organized by the negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA) dimensions, respectively. This NA/PA framework integrates previous research, dimensional theories of emotional behavior, and physiological assessment of pathological emotion.

Notes: The 10 GHz ECR-I ion source at ATLAS is being modified to create a small inner volume within the main plasma chamber to reduce the residual helium background gas load. This effort is part of an experiment to measure the residual concentration of 3He in highly isotopically enriched 4He samples. The modification consists of a new extractor electrode on which is integrally mounted a 2.5-cm-diam quartz tube of approximately 8 cm length. Energizing just the extraction coil produces an ECR only inside the quartz volume. The quartz tube is pumped only through the 1-mm-diam extraction hole. rf power is provided by propagation through the main plasma tank acting as a multimode waveguide. The source must operate in the pressure regime of 10–200 mTorr in order to achieve sufficient sensitivity to measure a 3He/4He ratio of approximately 1×10−15. Results of these tests and the operation of the source in this highly unusual mode will be presented. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two techniques for the discrete injection of material into an Electron Cyclotron Resonance ion source (ECRIS) have been developed for the purpose of measuring the ionization and confinement times of ion species. Previously only solid materials in conjunction with a pulsed laser were used in these studies due to the discrete material introduction produced by this configuration. The first method replaces the pulsed laser with a fast high voltage pulse applied to a sputter sample. The high voltage pulse has a rise time of 100 ns, fall time of 80.0 μs, and variable pulse duration. The second method utilizes a fast-pulsed gas valve capable of producing a gas pulse 160 μs in width. These pulse widths are well below the ionization times of the lower charge states and thus allows for time measurements to be made of all charge states. Both of these techniques can be employed to study the effects of rf power, coil configuration, biased disk, and gas mixing on ionization and confinement times. Rise times for neon, argon, and gold will be presented. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rotationally resolved S1←S0 fluorescence excitation spectra of 2-chloronaphthalene (2ClN) are measured using a newly constructed ultraviolet (UV) laser/molecular beam spectrometer. More than 1000 well-resolved rotational lines are recorded at a resolution of ∼3 MHz for the two overlapping band origins of the 35Cl and 37Cl isotopomers (Δνorigin∼3 GHz) over a 3.5 cm−1 spectral region at a rotational temperature of 10 K. Both spectra are hybrid bands, having 18% a-/82% b-type character in accordance with 1La←1A1 excitations observed for other 2-substituted naphthalenes. Additionally, Cl nuclear quadrupole splittings are observed as broadened asymmetric line shapes with linewidths from 5 to 20 MHz. Least-squares fits of these line shapes coupled with high-precision Fourier-transform microwave measurements of the ground state have provided accurate S1 quadrupole coupling constants. Specified relative to the principal quadrupole tensor orientation of S0, the S0 and S1 values of eQqzz are −71.198(5) MHz and −67.8(30) MHz, and the asymmetry parameters, η=(eQqyy−eQqxx)/eQqzz, are 0.076 38(5) and 0.13(5), respectively. The experimental line shapes are fit to Voigt functions, yielding 4.9(3) MHz homogeneous (lifetime) and 3.0(2) MHz inhomogeneous (Doppler) contributions. All of the observed structure are well reproduced by more than 20 000 transitions predicted for the nuclear-quadrupole-split rotational spectra of the two hybrid-band origins. Furthermore, the homogeneous linewidths show no dependence on either the upper state energy or angular momentum quantum numbers. The absence of additional level structure at the resolution of 1 MHz or more, from heavy-atom-enhanced intersystem crossing mechanisms, is discussed within the framework of radiationless transition theory. The quadrupole tensor components are used in simple theoretical models to investigate the orbital character of the S1 state and its radiationless decay mechanisms. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
