    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Chemie der Verdampfung von In2Te3(s) wurde mittels automatisierter gleichzeitiger Anwendung derKnudsen- und Torsions-Effusion, mittels Hochtem-peraturmassenspektrometrie und entsprechenden Hilfsmethoden untersucht. Es wird über die ersten absoluten Messungen des Dampfdrucks von In2Te3 berichtet. In2Te3(s) verdampfte inkongruent im Temperaturbereich von 701–889 K, wobei Te2(g) und eine feste Lösung mit der ZusammensetzungX In=0.42 undX Te=0.58 entstand. Die Standard-Enthalphie der Reaktion bei 298 K, ΔH° (298 K), war nach der Methode des dritten Gesetzes 136.0±0.3 kJ/mol. Die erwähnte feste Lösung verdampfte inkongruent unter Bildung von InTe(s) und einem Dampf, der aus Te2(g) und In2Te(g) bestand. InTe(s) verdampfte im Bereich von 701–887 K kongruent unter Bildung von Te2(g) und In2Te(g); ΔH v ° (298 K) nach dem dritten Gesetz war 201.5±1.0 kJ/mol. Diese Ergebnisse sind im Gegensatz zu Literaturangaben zur Verdampfung von In2Te3, wobei sowohl kongruente als auch inkongruente Verdampfung zu InTe(s) berichtet wurden. Außerdem wurde InTe(s) als inkongruent verdampfend beschrieben. Diese Abweichungen werden diskutiert.
    Notes: Abstract The vaporization chemistry of In2Te3(s) was studied by the computer-automated simultaneousKnudsen-effusion and torsion-effusion method, by high-temperature mass spectrometry, and by ancillary methods. The first absolute measurements of the vapor pressure of In2Te3 are reported. In2Te3(s) vaporized incongruently in the temperature range 701–889 K and produced Te2(g) and a solid-solution, (X In=0.42 andX Te=0.58). The standard enthalpy of the reaction at 298 K, ΔH° (298 K) by the third-law method was 136.0±0.3 kJ/mol of vapor. The above solid solution vaporized incongruently and produced InTe(s) and a vapor which consisted of Te2(g) and In2Te(g). InTe(s) vaporized congruently in the range 701–887 K and produced Te2(g) and In2Te(g); the third-law ΔH v ° (298 K) was 201.5±1.0 kJ/mol. These results were at variance with the literature on vaporization of In2Te3 where both congruent vaporization and incongruent vaporization to give InTe(s) are separately reported. Further, InTe(s) was reported to vaporize incongruently. These differences are discussed.

    Notes: Summary.  In an epidemiological study of symptomatic human rotaviruses in Mysore, India during 1993 and 1994, isolates MP409 and MP480 were isolated from two children suffering from severe, acute dehydrating diarrhea. Both isolates exhibited ‘long’ RNA pattern and subgroup I specificity suggesting the likelihood of their animal origin. Both isolates did not react with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) specific for serotypes G1 to G6 as well as G10. To determine the genetic origin of these isolates, complete nucleotide sequences of genes encoding the outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7, nonstructural proteins NSP1 and NSP3 and viral enterotoxin protein NSP4 from MP409 and partial sequences of genes from MP480 were determined. Comparison of the 5′ and 3′ terminal sequences of 250 nucleotides revealed complete identity of the gene sequences in both strains suggesting that MP409 and MP480 are two different isolates of a single strain. Comparison of the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of VP4, VP7, NSP1 and NSP3 of MP409 with published sequences of strains belonging to different serotypes revealed that both outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 and NSP1 are highly related to the respective proteins from the P6[1], G8 type bovine rotavirus A5 isolated from a calf with diarrhoea in Thailand and that the NSP3 is highly homologous to that of bovine rotaviruses. The NSP4 protein showed greatest sequence identity with NSP4s belonging to the KUN genetic group to which NSP4s from human G2 type strains and bovine rotaviruses belong. MP409 and MP480 likely signify interspecies transmission of P6[1], G8 type strains from cattle to humans and represent the first P6[1] type rotaviruses isolated in humans. These and our previous studies on the asymptomatic neonatal strain I321 are of evolutionary and epidemiological significance in the context of close association of majority of the Indian population with cattle.

    Notes: Abstract Chromium and molybdenum were introduced into alumina through gel synthesis. Both elements are soluble in aluminium hydroxide and low-temperature (〈1400°C) aluminium oxide. In the course of transformation from hydroxide to oxide, the evaporation-condensation of vapour phase (below 1000° C) causes shrinkage of the porous compact due to particle rearrangement and growth through capillary drag and adsorption. Subsequently, differences in agglomerate structure, grain growth, solute atmosphere and densification arise because of variations in the crystal lochemical behaviour of chromium and molybdenum. The solute atmospheres of chromia-vacancy and molybdenum metal reveal sub-grain boundaries and dislocations. In chromia-alumina solid solution these defects annihilate and contribute to densification (98%th) with increase in temperature to 1600° C. However, with further rise in temperature to 1700° C, the solid solution desinters to 85%th and creep cavities show transition from grain boundary to lattice creep. In Mo-Al2O3 composite the defects are locked by molybdenum solute, and as a result there is an insignificant increase in densification (30%th at 1600°C).

    Description / Table of Contents: Resumé Depuis 1982 en Malaisie, une nouvelle orientation a été donnée à la politique nationale concernant la cruissance démographique. L'étude présentée examine comment ont évolué, sur une période de 5 ans et avec un intervalle de 10 ans, les pratiques contraceptives adoptées par les trois groupes ethniques du pays, à savoir les Malais, les Chinois et les Indiens. Il s'agit en fait d'une étude rétrospective fondée sur les visites à la même clinique de planning familial en milieu urbain. Le changement le plus frappant se rapporte à la composition raciale des groupes utilisant les contraceptifs au cours des deux périodes en question. En effet, les Chinois, qui constituaient le groupe prédominant de 1975 à 1979, ont été remplacés par le groupe malais durant la période de 1985 à 1989. Quant au nombre des Indiens faisant appel à la contraception, il est resté le même. Les résultats font également ressortir une tendance significative au changement de la part de celles qui soit prenaient la pilule soit choisissaient la stérilisation. Aucune modification significative n'est apparue en ce qui concerne l'utilisation des DIU, des préservatifs et des préparations injectables. Cette étude démontre comment les politiques nationales, le niveau d'instruction et les migrations du milieu rural au milieu urbain peuvent considérablement influer sur les pratiques contraceptives.
    Abstract: Resumen Desde 1982 se han producido cambios en la política nacional de Malaysia relativa al crecimiento demográfico. Este estudio examina los cambios en las prácticas anticonceptivas de los tres grupos étnicos del país — malayos, chinos e indios — durante un período de 5 años y con un intervalo de 10 años. Se trata en realidad de un estudio retrospectivo basado en las visitas a la misma clínica de planificación familiar en un ambiente urbano. El cambio más notable observado se relaciona con la composición racial de los grupos que utilizaban anticonceptivos en el curso de los dos períodos en cuestión. Los chinos, que constituían el grupo predominante de 1975 a 1979, fueron reemplazados por los malayos durante el período comprendido entre 1985 y 1989. No se observó cambio alguno en el número de indios que recurrían a anticonceptivos. Los resultados revelan asimismo una tendencia significativa al cambio de parte de quienes tomaban la píldora y de quienes habían elegido la esterilización. No se observó ninguna modificación significativa respecto de la utilización de DIU, preservativos y preparados inyectables. Este estudio demuestra cómo las políticas nacionales, los niveles de educación y las migraciones del ámbito rural al ámbito urbano pueden influir considerablemente sobre las prácticas anticonceptivas.
    Notes: Abstract There have been changes in the national policy regarding population growth in Malaysia from 1982. This report studies the changes in contraceptive practice among the three racial groups in this country, i.e. Malays, Chinese and Indians, over a 5-year period with an interval of 10 years. This is a retrospective study based on the attendance at the same family planning clinic in an urban setting. The striking change noted is the change in the racial composition of contraceptive usage in the two study periods with a shift from the Chinese being predominant in 1975–1979 to Malays in 1985–1989. There was no change among the numbers of Indians using contraception. The results also reveal a significant trend of change for users of the pill and those undergoing sterilization. There were no significant changes in IUD, condom and injectable usage. The study demonstrates how national policies, level of education and rural urban migration can significantly alter contraceptive practice.

    Notes: The structural properties of epoxy can be retained and thermal stability improved by blending epoxy with bismaleimide (BMI) and curing them simultaneously. Depending on the curing agent, the overall viscoelastic properties of the cured material can be varied. In the present work, diaminodiphenylmethane and diaminodiphenyl sulfone have been used as curing agents to prepare blends of epoxy and BMI. The blends were characterized by DSC, TG, DMA, and SEM. Results indicate that an excellent interpenetrating network forms in both the cases and that the DDM-cured system gives better thermal stability than that of the DDS-cured system. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
