    Notes: Abstract The existing methods to solve the problems of pulsatile flow in the cardiovascular system are based on either linear axisymmetric equations or non-linear one-dimensional equations. The solutions thus obtained give only a mediocre comparison with measurements. In this paper, a non-linear axisymmetric theory is proposed. The starting point of the present theory is a third degree polynomial representation of the velocity profile. Integral methods are then applied to obtain the governing equations. To ascertain the accuracy of the theory proposed above, the calculations for a simple case involving pulsatile flow in a long rigid tube were performed. The results are: (a) the average velocities compare very well with exact solutions and (b) the velocity profiles for a given frequency agree very well with exact solutions for flow in small tubes, but tend to differ as tube size is increased.

    Notes: Abstract Data on 120 GeV photoproduction ofJ/Ψ's in nuclear targets are re-examined to extract the absorption cross section forJ/Ψ's in high energy collisions with nucleons. We find σ a =6.6±2.2 mb in contrast with an earlier estimate of 1–2 mb. Comparison of low and high energy data on photon producedJ/Ψ's thus no longer show possible evidence for observable effects of color screening. Examination of representative data on the Feynmanx distributions ofJ/Ψ production by hadrons demonstrates how to extract both the total inelasticJ/Ψ-nucleon cross section and the partial cross section into open charm. We find that the data is inconsistent with any significant contribution from color screening.

    Notes: Abstract   Background: In England and Wales in the 1960s there were marked declines in suicide rates. These reductions were partly attributable to the detoxification of the domestic gas supplies; however, their extent varied by age and gender, with the most striking effects seen in older men. The objective of this study was to investigate method-specific trends in suicide between 1950 and 1975 to elucidate possible explanations for the patterns seen in different demographic groups. Methods: An analysis of age-standardised method-specific suicide rates for England and Wales between 1950 and 1975 was carried out using routinely available mortality and population statistics. Results: As has previously been shown, there were marked reductions in suicides by gassing in men and women of all ages between 1960 and 1975. In women and younger men, the effects of these reductions on overall suicide rates were partially offset by rises in drug overdose deaths (method substitution), but there were no immediate increases in the use of other suicide methods. In contrast, in older men, reductions in suicide by gassing were accompanied by only a slight increase in overdose suicides as well as reductions in rates of suicide using all other methods. The modest rise in overdose fatalities in older men occurred despite the fact that they were more often prescribed barbiturates and tricyclic antidepressants than younger men. Conclusions: Accessibility to and the lethality of particular methods of suicide may have profound effects on overall suicide rates. Such effects appear to depend upon the popularity of the method and the extent to which alternative methods that are acceptable to the individual are available. Social and psychological interpretations of fluctuations in suicide rates should only be made after assessing the possible contribution to these of changes in method availability and lethality.

    Notes: Abstract Closed form analytical expressions are obtained for predicting the limiting rate of mean reactant conversion in homogeneous turbulent flows under the influence of a binary reaction of the type F+rO→(1+r) Product. These relations are obtained by means of a single-point Probability Density Function (PDF) method based on the Amplitude Mapping Closure (Kraichnan, 1989; Chen et al., 1989; Pope, 1991). It is demonstrated that with this model, the maximum rate of the mean reactants' decay can be conveniently expressed in terms of definite integrals of the parabolic cylinder functions. For the cases with complete initial segregation, it is shown that the results agree very closely with those predicted by employing a beta density of the first kind for an appropriately defined Shvab-Zeldovich scalar variable. With this assumption, the final results can also be expressed in terms of closed form analytical expressions which are based on the incomplete beta functions. With both models, the dependence of the results on the stoichiometric coefficient and the equivalence ratio can be expressed in an explicit manner. For a stoichiometric mixture the analytical results simplify significantly. In the mapping closure these results are expressed in terms of simple trigonometric functions. For the beta density model they are in the form of gamma functions. In all the cases considered, the results are shown to agree well with data generated by Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). Due to the simplicity of these expressions and because of nice mathematical features of the parabolic cylinder and the incomplete beta functions, these models are recommended for estimating the limiting rate of mean reactant conversion in homogeneous reacting flows. These results also provide a valuable tool in assessing the extent of validity of turbulence closures for the modeling of unpremixed reacting flows. Some discussions are provided on the extension of the models for teating more complicated reacting systems, including realistic kinetics schemes and multiscalar mixing with finite rate chemical reactions in more complex configurations.
