Notes: Abstract The title compound, C18H19O4N3,M r=341, the base (I) of the dibenzoxazepine anti-depressant drug Sintamil, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group,Pbca withZ=8 in a cella=8.636(2),b=23.687(3),c=16.787(3)Å,V c=3434 Å3. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined toR=0.102 (R w=0.093) with 1348 observed CuKα reflections. The tricyclic framework takes up a saddle shape with the heterocyclic ring in boat conformation; the flanking planar aromatic rings make angles 148.2(3), 150.8(3)° with the central ring plane, compared with 143.5(5), 158.1(5)° in Sintamil monohydrate (II). BothI andII have extended-CNMe2 side chains (with appreciable thermal motion); this conformation, and the distances of the -N(CH3)3 nitrogen to the centers of aromatic rings (6.4 and 7.8 Å inI), are consistent with inhibition of uptake mechanisms underlying the pharmacological action.

Notes: Abstract N. Krier and J. C. D. S. Yaqub have proved that if a projective plane π admits an involutory homology and an involutory elation, then π does not belong to the Lenz-Barlotti class I1, and belongs to the class I2. In this paper, we find the classification of projective planes having a homology of orderp and an elation of orderq, wherep andq are primes.

Notes: Abstract The effects of nucleating agents such as dibenzylidene sorbitol (DBS) (a derivative of sorbitol), pine crystal 1500, sodium and potassium benzoates in commercial grade isotactic polypropylene iPP are studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Isothermal crystallization kinetics of polypropylene to the alpha phase have been analyzed using Avrami's model. Results indicate that dibenzylidene sorbitol and pine crystal are very effective in increasing the crystallization temperature of the polymer and number of nuclei formed during crystallization.

Notes: Abstract The grain-growth behaviour in 18Ni8Co5MoO.4Ti maraging steel was investigated in the temperature range 1123–1323 K. Grain sizes were estimated by measuring the diameter of the equivalent area of the individual grains directly on the optical microscope using a calibrated digital eyepiece. Grain-boundary migrations and substructure analyses were done using an electron microscope. These studies indicate that the overall grain growth in the steel follows the relationship ΔD=ktn where ΔD is the increase in the grain size. However, during the initial stage, a “time lag” for the grain growth to start is observed which is attributed to the presence of highly dislocated austenitic matrix on annealing. Evidence of abnormal grain growth is also seen after annealing at 1173 K for 480 min and at 1123 K for 300 min. The growth exponents for the normal and abnormal grain growth were found to be 0.40–0.44 and 0.90–2.0, respectively. One significant deviation observed in the study wasn decreasing from 0.44-0.40 at higher temperatures during the normal growth. This has been critically discussed in the light of the unique transformation characteristics of the steel. The activation energy for growth was calculated to be 60.0–62.5 kcal mol−1, indicating the overall growth is controlled by self diffusion in γ-iron.

Notes: Abstract The study of the microstructural aspects of the maraging steel weld repair has become important as this material finds extensive applications in aerospace and other strategic areas. The details available on these at present are very limited. During one of the fabrication trials of a large pressure vessel made of 18 Ni 1800 MPa maraging steel plates, 7.8 mm thick, defects were observed in the welds which were to be repaired. This called for simulated experiments. The microstructural variations observed in the repaired areas were the result of the repeated thermal cycles they had undergone. Based on this microstructural evidence, a new diagram depicting the newly formed weld zones is constructed from which the mechanical properties of the repair welds can be predicted.

Notes: Abstract The segregation features and interface characteristics in an Al/W composite system processed through liquid metallurgy technique under 1 g conditions has been studied. The effect of various melting parameters on the Al/W system containing 60 wt% (about 20 at%) tungsten particles, was investigated and the consequent metallographic features of these composites were studied. Although most of the segregation of tungsten particles was observed at the bottom of the sample, segregation was also noticed towards the side walls and the top portion of the sample. The segregation pattern is explained in terms of force under Stoke's law and conventional convection. The formation of intermetallic compounds between aluminium and tungsten, and limited solubility between these two elements, is also reported.
