    Notes: The results of neutron irradiation up to a fluence of 1023 m−2 (E〉0.1 MeV) are reported for sputtered NbN/AlN multilayer films. The superconducting properties change only slightly with neutron fluence. For the best multilayers, which exhibit critical current densities Jc of 〉108 A/m2 at 4.2 K and 20 T, the high-field data show virtually no change in Jc. It is therefore proved experimentally that NbN/AlN multilayers, which exhibit higher Jc than single NbN thin films, exhibit the same extremely radiation-hard, high-field behavior which was reported previously for such NbN films.

    Notes: The Alexandrite laser belongs to the class of vibronical lasers. The broad spectral laser gain of Alexandrite laser gain of Alexandrite suggests the possibility to generate femto-second laser pulses with passive mode locking. Experiments showed, however, that a limit of pulsewidth shortening is reached near 10 ps. This effect is caused by the limited mode-locking capability of the passive absorber. The results of eight different passive absorbers used to generate mode locking are presented. The effect of bandwidth narrowing of the laser emission spectrum of Alexandrite on pulsewidth and pulse-train energy was measured for these absorbers. The dependence of laser output energy with the temperature on the active medium was also investigated.

    Notes: Four types of differently prepared NbN films were irradiated at 4.6 K with fast neutrons to a fluence of 5.3 × 1022 m−2 (E(approximately-greater-than)0.1 MeV). The critical current densities Jc were measured in magnetic fields up to 23 T prior to irradiation, following low-temperature irradiation, and again after an annealing cycle to room temperature. In all films, Jc was found to be completely unchanged by the radiation and annealing treatments in fields up to 15 T, but to increase at higher magnetic fields. At the same time, the upper critical fields Bc2 increased by about 0.5 T (∼2%). Replotting Jc versus reduced field B/Bc2 leads to identical field dependencies also in the high-field range. Hence, the observed increase of Jc is equantitatively explained as a Bc2 effect.

    Notes: Four different erbium laser crystals, two YAG:Er (40 at. %) and two YAlO3:Er (30 at. % and 50 at. %), have been compared with respect to their laser thresholds and slope efficiencies. The performance of these laser crystals was further compared with a YSGG:Cr:Er (Y3Sc2Ga3O12) (3.6 at. % Cr3+ and 4 at. % Er3+). The experimental results are explained with up-conversion processes in the crystals.

    Notes: A new effect called "ac-current straightening'' has been observed in ceramic (Bi,Pb)-2223 slabs carrying ac current Idc+Iac cos(ωt). The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the ceramic were measured at 77 K at frequencies ranging from 50 to 20 000 Hz. A spectrum analyzer showed a series of high harmonics in the voltage signal as well as a constant voltage drop. The full set of experimental data has been explained theoretically using the Bean–Kim critical state model with a magnetic field dependent critical current jc(H)=jc(0)/(1+H/H0). A low transport ac current gives a voltage linearly proportional to the frequency and quadratically proportional to the ac-current amplitude Iac. It consists of odd harmonics only. If a bias dc current is switched on, then even harmonics and a dc-voltage drop appear. Their amplitudes are proportional to the small parameter Iac/cH0 and depend on the Idc/Iac ratio.

    Notes: The influence of the electric field on the shielding currents of melt textured YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconductors was investigated by low frequency ac magnetization measurements. The electric field was varied by changing the amplitude as well as the frequency of the applied ac field. These two dependencies were found to be consistent with each other and allowed to develop a method for the derivation of the E(J) characteristic of the superconductor from these measurements. E(J) was found to follow approximately a power law with an exponent, which decreases monotonically with increasing magnetic dc field. The results are compared with dc magnetization measurements, where the corresponding electric field is lower by up to four orders of magnitude. We find convincing agreement between the dc shielding currents and their relaxation and the current–voltage characteristic derived from the ac technique. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on significant enhancements of the transport critical current densities Jc in (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10/Ag tapes at 77 K and higher magnetic fields after neutron irradiation. This enhancement is attributed to an improvement in the flux pinning capability of this material by the neutron-induced defects. The angular dependence of Jc is still consistent with two-dimensionality, i.e., flux pinning of pancake and/or Josephson vortices is directly confirmed by this transport measurement. Fast neutron irradiation also affects the weak links in a way which agrees with previous results on unaligned ceramics. However, there are some peculiarities which need further investigation. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on very high trapped fields (13.3 T at 33 K) achieved in bulk YBa2Cu3O7−δ melt-textured monoliths, which were reinforced by steel tubes to compensate the tensile stress generated during activation. The flux pinning properties were improved by neutron irradiation. The resulting increase of the critical current density shifts the maximum attainable trapped fields to higher temperatures (by about 10 K). © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Optoacoustics, which combines the merits and most compelling features of light and sound, is a technique for diagnosing optical tissue properties and for performing noninvasive medical imaging. We present a detection method based on Schlieren optical imaging used to record optoacoustic waves generated with 6 ns long laser pulses. These waves result from irradiation of optically absorbing targets hidden deep inside highly scattering media. Since they are generated from one single shot, Schlieren images contain all the information necessary for the reconstruction of the absorbing structures. The detection method allows on-line imaging with a spatial resolution of about 30 μm with high contrast. The proposed real-time imaging system not only enhances the level of visible detail but it is ideally suited for monitoring dynamic tissue changes. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The transport critical current densities, Jc, of superconducting (Bi, Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox/Ag tapes were measured before and after employing a special radiation technique, which leaves the grain boundary properties largely unaffected. We identify two regions separated by a temperature dependent crossover field Hgb−p. In the low field region, Jc is limited by the transport currents across the grain boundaries, which remain unchanged after irradiation. Above Hgb−p, Jc is limited by flux pinning. In this field region, the artificial defects optimize flux pinning and enhance Jc. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
