Notes: Infrared (IR) laser-induced resonant desorption/ablation of benzene layers condensed on liquid-nitrogen-cooled substrates has been investigated using the time-of-flight (TOF) technique. Adsorbates of up to 5 μm thickness were irradiated with a line-tuned TEA CO2 laser. Time-resolved detection of desorbed particles was performed with a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS). Measured TOF spectra can usually be well fitted with a stream-modified Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. Systematic deviations from these fits were observed depending on film thickness, laser fluence, and angle of detection. Spectroscopic data of the adsorbate–substrate system needed for model calculations were measured in situ. The absorption coefficients were found to be fluence dependent. Measurements of the desorption yield and kinetic energy of the desorbed particles were performed with the P932 and P934-CO2 laser lines as a function of film thickness and laser fluence. The solid–liquid phase transition could clearly be observed in these experiments. Average kinetic energies of up to 0.8 eV were measured in the TOF spectra, where the adsorbate temperature could be estimated to be less than 600 K. IR multilayer laser-induced desorption (LID) exhibits features very similar to those reported for UV multilayer LID. A mechanism based on the sudden rise of the adsorbate vapor pressure due to fast energy deposition by the laser pulse is discussed.

Notes: The linear stability of a modulated Taylor–Couette system when the inner cylindrical boundary consists of a crystalline solid-liquid interface is considered. Both experimentally and in numerical calculations it is found that the two-phase system is significantly less stable than the analogous rigid-walled system for materials with moderately large Prandtl numbers. A numerical treatment based on Floquet theory is described, which gives results that are in good agreement with preliminary experimental findings. In addition, this instability is further examined by carrying out a formal asymptotic expansion of the solution in the limit of large Prandtl number. In this limit the Floquet analysis is considerably simplified, and the linear stability of the modulated system can be determined to leading order through a conventional stability analysis, without recourse to Floquet theory. The resulting simplified problem is then studied for both the narrow gap geometry and for the case of a finite gap. It is surprising that the determination of the linear stability of the two-phase system is considerably simpler than that of the rigid-walled system, despite the complications introduced by the presence of the crystal-melt interface.

Notes: A mathematical model is constructed to study the evolution of a vertically oriented, thin, free liquid film draining under gravity when there is an insoluble surfactant, with finite variable surface viscosity, on its free surface. Lubrication theory for this free film results in three coupled nonlinear partial differential equations describing the free surface shape, the surface velocity and the surfactant transport, at leading order. In the limit of large surface viscosity and the Marangoni effect, the evolution of the free surface is that of a rigid film. For mobile films with small surface viscosity, transition from a mobile to an essentially immobile film is observed for large Marangoni effects. It is also verified that stable aqueous films can be formed in the regime of high surfactant concentrations. The theoretical results are compared with experiment; the purpose of both is to act as a model problem to evaluate the effectiveness of surfactants for potential use in foam-fabrication processes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Immunohistochcmical examination showed that trypsin was present in mucus-secreting cell layers of Atlantic salmon, such as surface epithelial cells of gills and intestine, and epidermal cells of dorsal skin. Trypsin in tissue slices was identified by an immunohisto-chemical technique which used affinity purified immunoglobulins from rabbit antisera against purified salmon pancreatic trypsin as primary antibodies. Most of the positively stained cells appeared to be granulated and secretory. The authors hypothesize that trypsin in mucus-secreting cell layers is a part of the non-specific immune defence of the fish.

Notes: Abstract High-accuracy differential cross-section data for neutron-deuteron elastic scattering at centre-of-mass backward angles in the range from 140° to 178° have been measured to accuracies better than ±3% for incident neutron energies of 8.0, 10.0, and 14.0 MeV. The measurements were made by detection of the recoil deuterons and protons from a mixed CD2-CH2 foil. The new data are compared to existing data and to three-nucleon calculations with the Bonn-B nucleon-nucleon potential. We conclude that the present measurements unambiguously resolve the discrepancies among previously reported data of the same type.

Notes: Summary Cold agglutinins of anti-Pr specificity were detected in two newborn infants suffering from serologically ascertained rubella embryopathy, an IgM κ anti-Pra, titer 64, and an IgM λ anti-Pr1, titer 16. The cases are rare examples of cold agglutinin production in newborns; a possible relationship between anti-Pr specificity and rubella infection is discussed.

Notes: Summary The specificity and prevalence of human IgG antibodies crossreactive between HSV-1 (ANG) and VZV (Ellen) was examined in immunoblots. Using antibody fractions purified on HSV- and VZV-coated affinity chromatography columns and by preadsorption of sera with HSV and/or VZV lysates a cross-reactivity between HSV-1 gB and VZV gp-II was demonstrated. Crossreaction of human IgG antibodies among other structural and nonstructural viral proteins, however, was not detected. The frequency of human IgG antibodies crossreactive between HSV-1 gB and VZV gp-II was highest in HSV-seropositive patients experiencing an acute primary VZV infection (4 out of 5 sera tested). In contrast, no crossreactive antibodies were found in sera of HSV-seronegative patients with acute primary VZV infection (0/6) or in sera from individuals with acute recurrent HSV or VZV infection (0/12). Analysis of sera from individuals with previous HSV and/or VZV infection showed the presence of antibodies crossreactive between HSV-1 gB and VZV gp-II in 3 out of 30 sera tested.
