Notes: The variations of the electrical resistivity, the magnetization, and the grain-boundary precipitates of a Ni-rich Ni-In alloy system with In concentration up to 7.5 at. % have been investigated as functions of annealing time at 773 K. For samples homogenized at 1225 K, clear grain boundaries are observed. However, for these aged samples, we observed both grain-boundary precipitates and variations of the electrical resistivity and the magnetization; and the binary alloy with higher In concentration has the higher variation rate in the decrease of the electrical resistivity, the increase of the magnetization, and the growth of the grain-boundary precipitates.

Notes: The optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of magnetic Nd15Fe77B8 and nonmagnetic Nd5Fe62B33 films have been investigated. It has been found that within the visible (wavelengths 4400–6400 A(ring)) the films are transparent with thickness less than 800 A(ring) for magnetic films and 1500 A(ring) for nonmagnetic films. This is due to the difference of the magnetic permeability μ between films. The oscillatory behavior with thickness of the films is observed in the film samples. The anomalous behaviors near the Curie temperature for both bulk- and film-type samples are similar to that of the type-III ferromagnets. The temperature at which the electrical resistance of the film-type samples increases abruptly varies from 620 K for 1000 A(ring) to 650 K for 2000 A(ring).

Notes: The variations of the grain-boundary precipitates, the electrical resistivity, and the magnetization of a Ni-8 at. % Sn alloy have been investigated as functions of annealing temperature and annealing time. For samples annealed at 773 K, the averaged growth rate of the size of the grain-boundary precipitates is roughly 0.42 μm/h for the first 24 h; the electrical resistivity at T=10 K and the magnetization at T=10 K and H=5 kG vary monotonically with respect to the annealing time for the first 2 weeks, changing from 22.5 to 7 μΩ cm for the electrical resistivity and from 27 to 33 emu/g for the magnetization. A large tail section in the magnetization versus temperature curve was also observed in the aged samples. All these electrical and magnetic variations in the Ni-8 at. % Sn samples annealed at 773 K varied monotonically with respect to the growth of the grain-boundary precipitates.

Notes: 1 This study used contractility methods with the portal veins of 5- and 14-week-old Wistar–Kyoto normotensive rats (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). The SHRs are prehypertensive at 5 weeks. 2 The first part of our study was to determine whether the responsiveness to isoprenaline and forskolin was altered in the maturation of portal veins from normo- and prehypertensive rats. The responses to forskolin were similar on the portal veins of 5- and 14-week-old WKY and SHRs. 3 The sensitivity and maximum responses to isoprenaline were similar on portal veins of 5- and 14-week-old WKY. The sensitivity and maximum responses to isoprenaline were lower on the portal veins of 5-week-old SHRs (pD2 = 8.25, maximum = 85%) than age-matched WKY (pD2 = 8.79, maximum = 96%); these differences are not caused by hypertension. At 14 weeks, the sensitivity was similar (WKY pD2 = 8.74, SHR pD2 = 8.65) but the maximum responses to isoprenaline were lower on the portal veins SHRs (77%) than WKY (97%). Thus, the sensitivity to isoprenaline increases with the development of hypertension in the SHR portal vein. 4 The second part of the study was to determine whether the affinity for isoprenaline at β2-adrenoceptors and the fractional β2-adrenoceptor occupancy–response relationships on the portal vein were altered in maturation from normo- and pre-hypertensive rats. The effects of bromoacetylalprenololmenthane (BAAM), an irreversible β-adrenoceptor blocker, on the isoprenaline responses of 5- and 14-week-old WKY and SHRs were studied. Maturation of the WKY portal vein between 5 and 14 weeks was associated with a loss of affinity for isoprenaline (from pKA of 7.13 to 7.87), and increase in β2-adrenoceptor reserve (from 72 to 92% at the 95% response). There were similar affinity and reserve findings in the maturation of the SHR portal vein. Thus, there are major changes in β2-adrenoceptor structure and reserve in maturation on the portal vein that are irrespective of the development of hypertension.

Notes: Epitaxial Co/Cr multilayers, and single-crystal Co thin films etc. have been grown on MgO and Al2O3 substrates with Cr and Mo as buffer layers by molecular beam epitaxy technique. From the structure and magnetoresistance studies, we have found that the ferromagnetic anisotropy of resistance (AMR) is strongly influenced by the buffer layer, but with negligible effect due to the variation of the structure of Co films. The AMR of Co film on Cr buffer layer is quite small (0.1%); however, the MR of Co/Cr multilayers is almost one order larger than the AMR of Co film on Cr buffer layer. An enhancement factor of 4 for the MR in Co/Cr multilayers by the interface roughness has been observed. This suggests that the effect due to the spin dependent scattering at the interfacial regions of the superlattice is larger than that due to the spin dependent scattering in the ferromagnetic layers for the MR in the Co/Cr multilayer system.

Notes: Programmed cell death (apoptosis) is an essential process in the development of various tissues and its involvement has been proposed for the elimination of self-reactive immature T and B lymphocytes when self antigens are first encountered. In order to further investigate the role of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease, the apoptosis of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated B cells, peritoneal cells from NZB x NZW F1 (NZB/W F1) mice and nonautoimmune BALB/c mice were assayed using an in vitro culture system. Splenic B cells were isolated and then stimulated with LPS before further activated with crosslinking antiµ antibody. In addition, the apoptosis of peritoneal cells induced by crosslinking antiµ antibody was also analyzed. The data revealed that the specific apoptosis of both activated B cells and peritoneal cells induced by crosslinking antiµ antibody was very similar comparing NZB/W F1 and nonautoimmune BALB/c mice. This activation-induced B-cells apoptosis could be rescued, however, with the addition of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-5 or IL-10, to the culture. The results suggest that there is no endogenous defect in the apoptosis of activated B cells for autoimmune NZB/W F1 comparing nonautoimmune BALB/c mice. Notably, however, abnormally high levels of the type 2 T helper (Th2)-related cytokines such as IL-5 or IL-10 may play an important role in the abnormal expansion of activated B cells in autoimmune NZB/W F1 mice.

Notes: X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements have been performed on nitrogen-doped diamond films with three different dopant concentrations and iron-layer-stabilized carbon nanotube (CNT) structures with various diameters at the C K-absorption edge using the sample drain current mode. The C K-edge XANES spectra of these N-doped diamond films resemble that of the undoped diamond regardless of the dopant concentration, which suggest that the overall bonding configuration of the C atom is unaltered. N dopants are found to reduce the intensities of both the sp2- and sp3-bond-derived resonance features in the XANES spectra. On the other hand, the C K-edge XANES spectra of CNTs indicate that the intensities of the π* and σ* bands and the interlayer-state features vary with the diameter of the CNT. This phenomenon may be caused by the Fe-layer-catalysed bending of the graphite sheet and the interaction between C and Fe atoms.

Notes: Abstract In situ particle reinforced Al-4.5Cu/TiB2 composite was fabricated with TiO2, H3BO3, Na3AlF6 powders and Al-4.5Cu alloy by reaction in melt. The composite can be directly casted into moulds to make composite parts. TiB2 particles distribute uniformly in the matrix. The average size of TiB2 particles is 0.93 μm. At the atomic scale, TiB2 is hexagonal, and exhibits hexagon or quadrilateral shape. The orientation relationships exist in the interfaces between TiB2 particle and α-Al, and between the reinforced small Al2Cu phase and α-Al in the composite. They are $$\begin{gathered} \left[ {0\bar 332} \right]_{TiB_2 } //\left[ {110} \right]_{\alpha - AI} \left\langle {01\bar 11} \right\rangle _{TiB_2 } //\left\langle {002} \right\rangle _{\alpha - AI} and\left[ {\bar 1\bar 32} \right]_{\alpha - AI} //\left[ {123} \right]_{AI_2 Cu} , \hfill \\ \left\langle {211} \right\rangle _{\alpha - AI} //\left\langle {111} \right\rangle _{AI_2 Cu} \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ . TiB2 particle is nucleation site for α-Al matrix growth in the composite. The interface between TiB2 particles and the matrix is clean and well bonded. No reaction product has been found through HREM observation. This is beneficial to the strength of the composite. The as-cast Al-4.5Cu/TiB2 composite exhibits mechanical excellent properties: the tensile strength is 416.7 MPa, the yield strength is 316.9 MPa, and the elongation is 3.3 pct.
