Notes: Recycling of preservative-treated waste wood can be an environmental problem due to toxic elements being emitted into the environment. Pyrolyzing CCA-treated wood at low temperature without any oxidizing agent is applied to capture the arsenic fraction in the solid residue. The influence of well-defined process parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, time and heating rate are studied. Arsenic contents in the gas phase were measured by a wet chemical method while structural analysis of the arsenic reaction products was determined with Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear DNA content in eight surgically resected mucin-producing pancreatic tumors (MPPT) consisting of two mucinous intraductal adenocarcinomas (MIDAC), two mucinous intraductal adenomas (MIDA), one mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (MCAC), and three mucinous cystadenomas (MCA) were measured by flow cytometry using paraffin-embedded tissue samples. The technique of Shutte was used for the preparation of paraffin-embedded tissue into single dissociated nuclei, while the method of Vindelov was used for staining the isolated nuclei with propidium iodine. Clinicopathologically, the four patients with MIDAC or MIDA were all male and had cystic lesions with a dilated pancreatic duct at the head of the pancreas, while the four patients with MCAC or MCA were all females and had cystic tumors at either the body or tail of the pancreas. All eight patients with MPPT had no metastasis to the regional lymph nodes and were all still alive without recurrence. In an analysis of nuclear DNA content, seven of eight patients had DNA diploid tumors while one patient with a MIDAC perforating the duodenum and choledochus had a DNA aneuploid tumor. Thus, these findings suggest that DNA diploid patterns in MPPT might be associated with a favorable prognosis in MPPT although some patients whose MPPT invaded the surrounding organs might have DNA aneuploid tumors.

Notes: Abstract A rare case of anomalous arrangement of the pancreaticobiliary ductal system without dilatation of the biliary tract (AAPBDS without DBT) associated with mucosal dysplasia of the biliary duct is described herein. A 53 year old male with a long history of diarrhea and right upper abdominal pain was diagnosed as having AAPBDS without DBT by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and other examinations. Excision of the gallbladder and biliary duct with a Roux-en-Y hepatico-jejunostomy was performed and subsequent pathological examination of the surgical specimens showed mucosal hyperplasia of the gall-bladder and mucosal dysplasia of the biliary duct. Considering the dysplastic changes of the biliary duct as seen in our case, and the high incidence of AAPBDS without DBT developing into carcinoma of the biliary duct, being 12.2 per cent, we suggest that pancreaticobiliary ductal diversion with excision of the gall-bladder and biliary duct should also be performed for AAPBDS without DBT. However, further pathological investigations concerning the excised biliary duct in AAPBDS without DBT will be need to be carried out.

Notes: Abstract: Involvement of the gastroduodenum is extremely rare in Crohn's disease. For obstructing duodenal Crohn's disease, bypass procedures have traditionally been selected. However, more recently, strictureplasty has become an acceptable surgical option. We treated two Crohn's disease patients with short proximal duodenal stenosis, using Finney-type strictureplasty. Their postoperative courses were uneventful and they have remained asymptomatic during follow-up periods of more than 5 years, and 4 months, respectively. Owing to the good clinical results of our two patients, we consider strictureplasty to be indicated for short proximal duodenal stenosis in Crohn's disease.

Notes: Summary Particleboards were treated with a low molecular-weight phenol-formaldehyde resin and their properties were evaluated. Particles were dipped into aqueous solutions of resin or sprayed with resin solutions before spraying the conventional phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesive, or sprayed with a mixture of low molecular-weight resin and the adhesive resin in a single step. Though mechanical properties and dimensional stability of the phenolic-resin-treated boards were affected considerably by the incorporated resin loading (IRL), the methods of treatment did not produce significantly different results. After boiling for 2-hours, the boards treated at 10% IRL retained 80% of their strength values in the dry condition. The internal bond strength increased with increasing IRL values, and the boards with 20% IRL showed twice the value of untreated controls at the same level of board density. Treated particleboards showed a dramatic reduction in the rate of swelling even at low resin loading. Results obtained from accelerated laboratory tests of biodegradation suggested that incorporated resin-solids worked well to enhance decay and termite resistance of particleboards. For a brown-rot fungus, the weight loss was substantially reduced at 15% IRL, whereas attack was suppressed almost entirely even at low resin loadings for the white-rot fungus.

Notes: Abstract Anisotropic thermal properties of molded carbon phenolic spheres (CPS), a mixture of sugi wood charcoal powders and phenol formaldehyde resin molded with a hot press, were investigated. The effects of the carbonizing temperature, particle size of chars, and density of the CPS on thermal properties were discussed. The molded CPS specimens were measured for their thermal properties using the laser flash method in both horizontal and vertical directions. The configuration of the CPS was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Anisotropy of the thermal properties (thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity) between horizontal and vertical directions of the molded CPS was much higher than that of the uncarbonized molded phenolic spheres. Therefore, converting wood into molded CPS is an effective way to enhance the thermal-anisotropy properties. More marked effects of the carbonizing temperature, particle size, and density were observed in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction. Anisotropy in thermal properties of the molded CPS may be considered an advantage for developing a new fire-retardant material for wood composites.

Notes: Abstract To examine the feasibility of using plate-type waveguides for effective detection of acoustic emissions (AEs) from termite attacks in wood, AEs generated by breaking pencil leads or by termite attacks were detected using an AE sensor with a resonant frequency of 140kHz with steel plates of four different sizes and thickness and three AE sensors without them. The larger plates were associated with larger amplitudes of the artificial AEs. The amplitudes of AEs detected by an AE sensor with a steel plate larger than 30×30mm were greater than the average amplitude of the artificial AEs detected by three AE sensors. When detecting AEs generated by the feeding activity of workers,Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, the cumulative AE events detected by the sensor with a steel plate were much larger than those of the three AE sensors without a plate. Because AE waves are attenuated much less in a steel plate than in wood, it is more effective to attach the AE sensor to wood with a steel plate rather than directly to the wood. These findings suggest that it is feasible to use an AE sensor with a plate-type waveguide for the nondestructive detection of termite attacks in wood.

Notes: Abstract: We report a case of progression of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) after proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis. A 43-year-old woman underwent a total proctocolectomy after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. In the course of the preoperative investigation, liver function test results were within the normal range. Four months after the proctocolectomy, the patient showed a high level of alkaline phosphatase (2398 IU/l) and a positive anti-mitochondrial antibody titer (〉1 : 160). There were no associated symptoms. A liver biopsy demonstrated expansion of all portal areas by infiltrates of lymphocytes and histiocytes. These appearances indicated chronic biliary disease and were compatible with PBC. The association of PBC and ulcerative colitis is rare. However, a review of the recent literature suggests that PBC and ulcerative colitis may be associated; this combination should be kept in mind.
