Notes: Abstract: A simple way to acquire information on the mean values of the phase operators sinϕ and cosϕ of an ultrasmall Josephson junction prepared in an arbitrary pure or not state is reported. Our proposal exploits the recently predicted occurrence of current spikes in the I-V characteristic of a mesojunction irradiated by a quantum single-mode low-intensity coherent electromagnetic field. A necessary condition for the validity of our treatment is presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract: This paper deals with the dissipative dynamics of a quantum harmonic oscillator interacting with a bosonic reservoir. The Master Equations based on the Rotating Wave and on the Feynman-Vernon system-reservoir couplings are compared highlighting differences and analogies. We discuss quantitatively and qualitatively the conditions under which the counter rotating terms can be neglected. By comparing the analytic solution of the heating function relative to the two different coupling models we conclude that, even in the weak coupling limit, the counter rotating terms give rise to a significant contribution in the non-Markovian short time regime. The main result of this paper is that such a contribution is actually experimentally measurable and thus relevant for a correct description of the system dynamics.

Notes: Abstract We report new FIR laser lines from 13CH2F2 molecules optically pumped by a waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser allows the pumping of 13CH2F2 vibrational transitions of large offset. 34 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 113.1 μm to 491.4 μm in wavelength, thus increasing the number of known FIR laser lines from this important molecule to 99. For all the new lines and many (36) of those known previously, precise offset measurements through the transferred Lamb-dip technique were performed. The frequency of six new laser lines was also directly measured by heterodyne detection with known laser lines.

Notes: Abstract Near-UV radiation is generated by doubling the frequency of a semiconductor laser in a nonlinear crystal. The crystal is contained in a resonant cavity in order to improve the conversion efficiency. The cavity increases the efficiency by about three orders of magnitude. This radiation has been used to perform spectroscopy of metastable magnesium in an atomic beam. We observed the (3s3p)3 P−(3s3d)3 D transition multiplet, which is of interest for metrological applications. The isotopic shift between24Mg and26Mg was measured and new information on the hyperfine structure of25Mg was obtained. This radiation source is promising also in order to improve the Mg frequency standard.

Notes: Abstract Radio and optical images of early-type galaxies with dust lanes have been analyzed in order to investigate the characteristics of the radio emission and to compare it with their properties at other frequencies. Except three galaxies, the remaining sources of our sample have diffuse radio emission, which does not extend beyond the stellar disk. The radio structures are small and weak (linear sizes in the range 2–10 kpc and radio powers in the range 5×1020–5×1021W Hz−1). Our preliminary results show that in a minority of cases (the most powerful radio sources) radio emission originates in the associated galactic nuclei, where a massive black hole is harboured. On the contrary, in the less powerful among our radio galaxies, sources originating from stellar phenomena may play and important role. We have classified the galaxies with respect to the dust lane morphology, comparing it with the radio emission. The sample is too small in order to reach firm conclusions, but the lack of radio sources in early-type galaxies with dust lanes along the galaxy minor axis seems to suggest that the accretion of material does not reach the conditions necessary to trigger nuclear activity.

Notes: Abstract. Motivated by recent experiments wherein Josephson devices are irradiated by microwaves fields or are coupled to LC resonators, we theoretically investigate the dynamics of a flux qubit coupled to a monochromatic bosonic mode. We define strong coupling conditions under which the qubit tunnelling frequency between the localized flux states can be controlled and even suppressed. The practical realization of such a regime leading to this hindered dynamics is discussed.

Notes: Abstract: A new conditional scheme for generating Bell states of two spatially separated high-Q cavities is reported. Our method is based on the passage of one atom only through the two cavities. A distinctive feature of our treatment is that it incorporates from the very beginning the unavoidable presence of fluctuations in the atom-cavity interaction times. The possibility of successfully implementing our proposal against cavity losses and atomic spontaneous decay is carefully discussed.
