Abstract The morphology of the styrene and acrylamide copolymer microspheres prepared by dispersion copolymerization in an ethanol/water medium was investigated. The effects of the styrene/acrylamide ratio, ethanol/water ratio and stabilizer concentration on the particle size and size distribution were studied. It was found that the initial solubility parameter of the system was the key factor in the process. The comonomer acrylamide also played an important role in the particle size and size distribution in the presence of cross-linking agent (divinylbenzene).
