    Notes: Abstract: The distribution of thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH), substance P, and the indoleamines [5-hy-droxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA)] has been examined in selected regions of the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord of the rabbit using sensitive radioimmunoassays for the first two and HPLC with electrochemical detection for the indoleamines. The levels of TRH- and substance P-like immunoreactivity (TRH-I and SP-I, respectively) were greatest in the ventral and dorsal grey matter, respectively. The level of TRH-I in most thoracic regions was greater than that in equivalent lumbar regions, but the only segmental difference in SP-I was in the ventral grey matter, where the lumbar segment contained more immunoreactivity. 5-HT and 5-HIAA were more evenly distributed than either peptide and showed no segmental variation in levels in equivalent regions, but the ventral grey matter contained significantly higher levels of 5-HT and had a greater 5-HT/5-HIAA ratio than all other regions. The absolute levels and the overall distribution of SP-I, TRH-I, and indoleamines in the thoracolumbar cord of the rabbit was very similar to that previously reported in both rats and humans, and the possible functional role of the peptides and indoleamines in spinal neurones is discussed.

    Notes: The regional distributions of thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH) and substance P in postmortem human spinal cord were determined by radioimmunoassay in fresh tissue taken from 22 patients who died without known neurological disease. Dorsal, ventral, and intermediolateral spinal cord regions were obtained from different segmental levels (lumbar L1, 2, 3, and 4; thoracic groups T1–3, T4–6, T7–9, and T10–12) together with selective regions of grey matter of lumbar spinal cord. The effects on peptide levels of (a) the age of the patient, (b) the postmortem time interval, and (c) freezing the tissue samples prior to assay were assessed. Levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were determined in regional lumbar and thoracic tissue using HPLC with electrochemical detection. Substance P was found in the highest concentration in the dorsal spinal cord, with no significant segmental differences. In contrast, TRH was present in higher levels in the ventral rather than the dorsal spinal cord, with segmental differences. There was a significant difference in the 5-HT/5-HIAA ratio between dorsal and ventral spinal cord, with the highest ratio in the ventral spinal cord. There were no significant differences in substance P, TRH, or 5-HT levels in spinal cords between 5 and 20 h postmortem or from patients aged between 65 and 90 years. Freezing the tissue (– 80°C for 24 h) prior to assay significantly reduced TRH and substance P levels compared to samples assayed immediately without prior freezing. The levels and distribution of peptides and indoleamines in human spinal cord are compared with those previously reported in the rat and other species and the possible roles of these substances in the control of motor function and autonomic control are discussed.

    Notes: The Z-Beamlet laser backlighter system at Sandia National Laboratories, which will be operational in 2001, will create a point or area source of high (or moderate) energy x rays behind a Z-accelerator [R. B. Spielman et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2105 (1998)] -driven target. In the former case with 〉2 kJ in up to four pulses of 〈2 ns total duration in a 20 ns interval, and 〉80% of the 2ω energy in a ∼50-μm-diam focal spot, the resulting 〉4×1016 W/cm2 irradiances will generate ≥8.950, 8.999 keV (zinc He-α, etc.) x rays. This high-energy source, as either a single point or four separate spots, will be used directly for four-frame point-projection x-ray imaging, and will attain spatial resolutions and signal-to-noise levels significantly better than presently possible on Z using existing methods. In combination with a ∼1 cm field of view, the technique will be well suited to the large, relatively opaque objects characteristic of Z experiments. This addition is anticipated to have a major impact upon the basic physics of z-pinch implosions, and therefore, possibly the ultimate x-ray powers and hohlraum (vacuum or dynamic) radiation temperatures that may be attainable. Furthermore, in combination with a slightly defocused point source and a medium-energy grazing-incidence microscope, Z-Beamlet may allow various inertial confinement fusion and high-energy-density physics experiments to be studied at even higher spatial resolution and signal-to-noise levels. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report here part of a detailed study of pulsed photoemission into pure liquid NH3. We find that scavengers and salts are not essential to the detection of photoelectrons in NH3, in contrast to previous measurements in H2O. A six order-of-magnitude range in the quantum yield has been found. Maximum yields are near 10−2 electrons per photon. As previous workers, we find a two-slope response to the yield curve which may be interpreted in terms of two thresholds. We interpret out observations in terms of photoinjection into a band of localized states lying below the conduction band of the NH3. The bottom of the conduction band in NH3 is found to be 0.95 eV below the vacuum. The band of localized states extends approximately 0.4 eV lower. Our analysis does not support either the ″4/2's″ or the ″5/2′s″ laws relating the yield to the excess energy above threshold.

    Notes: The presence of fluctuating dipoles in a polar liquid has been suggested to cause an intrinsic tail of localized states extending below the conduction band edge at −V0. If such preexisting states are the final states for photoinjection into such a liquid, then they cannot be described by the conventional treatment which assumes free-particle states. In this elementary model, the effect of both free and localized final states on the Fowler theory for photoemission is determined. Well above threshold Fowler's 1/2-power law is found. The near-threshold behavior is governed by the exponential tail in the final density of states. The results compare well with recent results on photoinjection into H2O and NH3. We find V0 to lie near −0.80 eV in NH3.

    Notes: A highly uniform thermal x-radiation field for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion implosions may be obtained by irradiating a four-hole, tetrahedral geometry, spherical hohlraum with all 60 Omega laser beams. Implosion studies and calculations [J. M. Wallace et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 3807 (1999)] indicate a drive uniformity comparable to that expected for the National Ignition Facility [J. A. Painser et al., Laser Focus World 30, 75 (1994)]. With 60 beams distributed over the cavity wall, tetrahedral hohlraums have a natural insensitivity to power balance and pointing errors. Standard, smooth Nova capsules imploded with this drive indicate that moderate convergence-ratio implosions, Cr∼18, have measured-neutron yield to calculated-clean-one-dimensional-neutronyield ratios similar to those previously investigated using the comparatively poor drive uniformity of Nova cylindrical hohlraums. This may indicate that a nonsymmetry-related neutron yield degradation mechanism, e.g., hydrodynamic mixing of cold, dense ablator material with the hot-spot region or some combination of nonsymmetry effects, is dominating in this Cr regime. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The induction of several amino acid decarboxylases under anaerobic conditions at low pH has been known for many years, but the mechanism associated with this type of regulation has not been elucidated. To study the regulation of the biodegradative arginine and lysine decarboxylases of Escherichia coli K12, Mudlac fusions to these genes were isolated. Mudlac fusion strains deficient for lysine decarboxylase or arginine decarboxylase were identified using decarboxylase indicator media and analysed for their regulation of β-galactosidase expression. The position of the Mud-lac fusion in lysine decarboxylase-deficient strains has been mapped to the cadA gene at 93.7 minutes, while the Mudlac fusions exhibiting a deficiency in the inducible arginine decarboxylase have been mapped to 93.4 minutes.
