Notes: Data are presented on high-power AlGaInN flip-chip light-emitting diodes (FCLEDs). The FCLED is "flipped-over" or inverted compared to conventional AlGaInN light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and light is extracted through the transparent sapphire substrate. This avoids light absorption from the semitransparent metal contact in conventional epitaxial-up designs. The power FCLED has a large emitting area (∼0.70 mm2) and an optimized contacting scheme allowing high current (200–1000 mA, J∼30–143 A/cm2) operation with low forward voltages (∼2.8 V at 200 mA), and therefore higher power conversion ("wall-plug") efficiencies. The improved extraction efficiency of the FCLED provides 1.6 times more light compared to top-emitting power LEDs and ten times more light than conventional small-area (∼0.07 mm2) LEDs. FCLEDs in the blue wavelength regime (∼435 nm peak) exhibit ∼21% external quantum efficiency and ∼20% wall-plug efficiency at 200 mA and with record light output powers of 400 mW at 1.0 A. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system plays an important role in postnatal somatic and skeletal muscle growth in pigs. There is little information on the occurrence and distribution of components of the IGF system in postnatal porcine skeletal muscle. IGF-I, IGF receptor 1 (IGF1R) and the IGF-binding proteins IGFBP-1 and -3 in longissimus dorsi and triceps brachii were localized in muscle biopsies from 12 commercially crossbred pigs aged from 28 to 199 days as well as from the sire generation, by immunohistochemistry. Plasma IGF-I concentrations were also determined using radioimmunoassays. Unlike other species, IGF-I was localized in porcine skeletal muscle fibres. Staining intensity correlated with the highest plasma IGF-I levels and phases of intensive muscle growth from the 11th to 22nd week. The pattern of IGF1R immunostaining, which was strong, correlated with that of IGF-I. IGF1R was also localized in endomysial tissues. IGFBP-1 was not detected within muscle fibres, but was found in the endomysium and vessel walls, while IGFBP-3 was localized with IGF-1 and its receptor. Higher magnification revealed that IGF1R, IGFBP-3 and probably IGF-I appeared in the tubular system. Inhibitory as well as stimulating controls of IGFBP-1 and -3 on IGF functions are discussed, which may maintain a balance between autocrine growth promoting activities of IGF-I and IGF1R.

Notes: Abstract Prelimary results of an extended program of coordinated X-ray and optical observations of TT Ari are presented. The object was observed on August 21/22 1985 both in X-rays (EXOSAT) and optical range, about 100 days after the return to the active state. The first detailed simultaneous study of TT Ari in active state indicates the presence of strongly absorbing structure in the system.

Notes: Abstract We present preliminary results of the EXOSAT X-ray observations and quasisimultaneous and simultaneous optical photometry of the X-ray source EX0020528+1454.8=1E0205+149 found independently as an serendipitous source both with Einstein and EXOSAT satellites. The optical counterpart is a pair of dMe stars. Our results indicate that the object is variable both in X-rays and optical wavelenghts, and probably belongs to dMe flare stars.

Notes: Abstract The goals of management of patients with respiratory failure include improving arterial oxygenation with PEEP and red cell transfusion to maintain oxygen carrying capacity, both of which contribute to improving tissue oxygen delivery. However, standard CPD-stored blood is rapidly depleted of 2,3 diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG) and ATP, with resultant inadequacy of the red cell oxygen transport function. In 15 patients requiring mechanical ventilation with PEEP whose initial Hct≤35%, we studied the effect of transfusion of 7 ml/kg of CPD-stored packed red blood cells on hemodynamic and oxygen delivery variables, pulmonary venous admixture (QA/QT), and erythrocytic P50, 2,3 DPG and ATP concentrations. Hemodynamics were not significantly altered by transfusion. 2,3 DPG decreased significantly from 14.5±1.1 to 13.1±1.5 mcmol/g Hb (mean±SD, p〈0.05). There was no significant change in P50 or ATP. QA/QT rose significantly, from 20.1±7.8 to 28.9±12.3% (mean±SD, p〈0.02). In our patients, an increase in arterial oxygen content obtained by transfusion was not followed by any associated decrease in cardiac work, as implied by solution of equations for oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption. The rise in QA/QT is undesirable in patients requiring PEEP, since it complicates management of their mechanical ventilatory support.

Notes: Summary This work describes a method for the immunolocalization of laminin on 1μm-thick tissue sections using a postembedding immunofluorescence technique. Embedding of unfixed or formaldehyde-fixed mouse renal cortex in either of the acrylic resins LR-White or LR-Gold permitted reliable postembedding immunofluorescence staining for laminin. LR-White was heat-cured at 50°C whereas LR-Gold was polymerized at −25°C. A stronger immunostaining for laminin was obtained from tissue embedded in polymerized LR-Gold compared with the staining from tissue embedded in LR-White. Prerequisites for adequate postembedding immunostaining are the partial dehydration of the tissue (maximum ethanol concentration, 70%) and pepsin treatment of the tissue sections prior to performing the immunostaining reactions.

Notes: Abstract In order to determine whether chromosomal inversion polymorphism inDrosophila subobscura is stable or varies from season to season, samples from selected sites were taken and analyzed at regular intervals. In 1960 the descendants of 749 females from samples collected at four sites in five months were examined. In 1963 and 1964, samples weretaken from only two sites at three seasons (spring, summer, autumn). Each of the twelve samples totalled 60 males which were then individually crossed with females from the “Küsnacht” stock, homozygous for the standard sequences. Eight descendant larvae from each cross were analyzed. Samples were judged according to the following criteria: a) Occurrence and frequencies of gene arrangements; b) Occurrence and frequencies of hetero- and homokaryotypes for each chromosome; c) distribution pattern of polymorphism over the entire set of chromosomes (shown in diagram of heterokaryotypes). Our results show that between samples from 1963 and 1964 there are yearly, seasonal and local differences in karyotype. The starting frequency of heterokaryotypes in the spring of one year differed from that of the next. Both frequencies increased from spring to autumn. At the same time the standard sequences which appear more frequently on each chromosome than any other gene arrangement, decrease during the summer in favour of other arrangements. In our 1960 material we found that karyotypes differed from locality to locality. These differences, however, were only statistically significant in a few cases. Furthermore, these figures show a less regular fluctuation than those of the other two years. The varying results for the first year and the second two may be due to differences in the size of our samples; further to secondary effects brought about by the use of different methods, and possibly to actual differences in the sampled populations.
