Notes: Abstract XPS and UPS photoemission experiments on the highT c superconductors (T c ≈90 K) with nominal composition YBa2Cu3O9-y (y≈2) show the following: a) The density of electronic states at the Fermi energy is very small, much smaller than in pure Cu. b) The Cu 2p spectra show only a Cu2+ contribution. c) The Ba core levels show a structure with two components of nearly equal magnitude, which leads to the suggestion that these compounds have large O2− vacancies coordinated to Ba2+ sites. d) Annealing at 400°C under UHV conditions leads possibly to a partial reduction of Cu2+ to lower Cu valence states and to a small increase of the O2− vacancy component of the Ba2+ line.

Notes: Abstract A number of theoretical models have been developed to explain the unexpected high temperature superconductivity in La-Me-Cu-oxides (Me=Ba, Sr) and Y-Ba-Cu-oxides. Some of these models invoke charge fluctuations on the copper ions in the superconductors between a 2+ and a 3+ state. In order to test these possibilities we have measured the Cu−2p 3/2-core level spectra of NaCuO2 in which the copper ion is in a 3+ state and compared it with the core line position in pure CuO and to superconducting oxides. The data strongly suggest, that there is, if any very little Cu3+ in the superconducting compounds present. However, we notice, that in comparison to trivalent and monovalent copper oxides the Cu−2p 3/2 line in CuO and the superconducting oxides is unexpectedly broad. The cause of this large linewidths remains so far unexplained.

Notes: Abstract XPS and UPS photoemission results on the new high-T c oxide superconductors La2−xMexCuO4 (Me=Sr, Ba) with a maximumT c≈40 K show the following: 1) the electronic density of states atE F is small (smaller than in pure Cu); the work function is metallic like with a value around 4.2 eV. 2) The Cu-2p spectra show hardly a possible small tendency to a mixed valent Cu3+/Cu2+state with increasing Me content, but smaller than expected from the Me2+ concentration suggesting that oxygen defects are responsible for the charge compensation. 3) The core level spectra of La, Me, and O show satellites which are at least partially related to O2− defects and which change in intensity with increasing surface sensitivity of the experiments. First core-level spectra on y1.2Ba0.8CuO4 with aT c ≈ K indicate a complicated composition of these new compounds.

Notes: Abstract Photoemission spectra of the La2−x Sr x CuO4 system which recently has been demonstrated of being capable to produce high temperature (T c 〉35 K) superconducting compounds are reported. The photoemission spectra of the basic system (La2CuO4) and of samples which contain up to 20% Sr are not significantly different. The density of states at the Fermi energy is small (smaller than that of metallic Cu) and the samples show a possible small shift of the Cu 2p lines towards the trivalent position with increasing tendency to superconductivity. From the Sr 3d spectra a considerable amount of oxygen defects coordinated to the Sr ions is estimated.

Notes: Abstract Photoemission valence band spectra with three different photon energies (21.2 eV, 40.8 eV, 1253.6 eV) for Cu2O and CuO and a number of copper oxide based superconducting ceramics are investigated, namely La2CuO4 (LCO), Y1Ba2Cu3O7 (YBCO), Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) and Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (TBCCO). From the Cu2O data it can be infered, that the He-II (40.8 eV) spectra give a fair representation of the density of states (DOS). In addition the agreement between the calculated density of states (DOS) and the He-II photoemission spectrum is almost perfect for Cu2O. This agreement is worse for CuO and the other materials which all have a Cu groundstate close to a 3d 9 configuration indicating a large contribution of thed-d correlation energy to the excitation spectra which is absent in Cu2O because of the filled 3d-shell. In all cases the experimental DOS atE F is very small and only the spectra of BSCCO show a well defined Fermi edge. The relevance of these findings with respect to the theoretical local functional density DOS calculations is discussed.
