Notes: The pathogenetic mechanism of fixed drug eruption (FDE) is still unknown. One of the most common causes of FDE is the use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Oxicams are in the NSAID group and piroxicam is one of the most used of these drugs. FDE caused by piroxicam is rare but a few cases have been reported. Patch tests are useful for diagnosing some cases of FDE; they give variable results on previously affected skin while no reaction appears on unaffected skin. Some cases of cross-sensitivity among piroxicam and other substances have been reported. We report two new cases of FDE due to piroxicam with negative patch test on normal skin and positive results on affected skin.

Notes: Introduction:  Cutaneous adverse reactions from topical or systemic administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are frequently described. New cases of adverse reactions from NSAIDs are reported, but the most frequently involved are drugs as ketoprofen or piroxicam. We report a case of photoallergical contact dermatitis from diclophenac with possible cross reaction to aceclophenac.Material and methods:  A 63-year-old-man, allergic to penicillin, developed eczematous lesions on hands and face, after applying a medicament containing diclophenac. Patch test and photopatch test (5 J/cm2) were performed with a photoallergen battery (Chemotechnique diagnosticsÒ), a NSAIDs battery (Aristegui lab.Ò) and aceclophenac 1%, 5% and 10% in pet. Readings were done at 48 and 96 hours in epicutaneous test and at 24 and 72 hours in photoallergic study, following the ICDRG criteria. Results:  The results of photoallergic study were as follows: diclophenac 1%, 5% and 10% in pet. and aceclophenac 10% in pet. positive at 24 and 72 hours. The remaining compounds of the NSAIDs battery were negative. Conclusions:  Diclophenac is a NAIDs derived from aryl alcanoic acid group used both topically and systemically in Spain. Some adverse reactions have been reported as exanthema, urticaria, eczema or Steven-Johnson’s syndrome. We have found only two cases reported as photosensitization from diclophenac. In one of them, the clinical lesion was described as a granuloma annular-like and photoallergic study was negative. We report a photocontact dermatitis from diclophenac with positive photopatch test. Photopatch test positive to aceclophenac may be explained as a cross reaction among group.

Notes: Abstract. High-spin states of the neutron-rich vibrational nucleus 114 Cd have been studied using the incomplete fusion reaction 110 Pd(7Li, p2n) and the GASP spectrometer in conjunction with the ISIS Si ball. About 50 new states with excitation energies up to 7 MeV and angular momentum $I \le (18^ + )$ were observed and for many of them, spin and parity could be firmly assigned. The band-like stuctures in 114 Cd are compared to the corresponding ones in the even-even neighbour 112 Cd.

Notes: Abstract Two strains of X. campestris from a collection and a wild strain isolated from infected cabbage were cultured in a defined medium in a 25 dm3 fermenter. The rheological characteristics of the broth were measured using a Weissenberg rheogoniometer. The rheological behaviour over a wide range of shear rates could be described with the power law model and a yield stress was obtained using the Herschel-Bulkley equation. As expected, the broth's flow behaviour is highly influenced by gum concentration. In general, the rheological parameters during the fermentations varied within the following ranges: K (2–210 dyn-sn/cm2), n (0.2–0.9), τ y (0.02–50 dyn/ cm2), with strain 1459 reaching the maximum values as well as the highest gum concentration. Differences in flow behaviour could be associated with different molecular configurations of the polymers produced by the different strains. Heat treatment of the broths change the rheological characteristics, increasing K and decreasing n. Reconstituted solutions of all sterilized gums exhibited similar rheological characteristics and, at low concentrations, also similar to those of a commercial xanthan.

Notes: Abstract Molecular diffusion of solutes, like sucrose in the xanthan gum fermentation, is important in order to understand the complex behavior of mass transfer mechanisms during the process. This work was focused to determine the diffusion coefficient of sucrose, a carbon source for xanthan production, using similar sucrose and xanthan concentrations to those occurring in a typical fermentation. The diaphragm cell method was used in experimental determinations. The data showed that diffusion coefficient of sucrose significantly decreases when xanthan gum concentration increases. Theoretical and semiempirical models were used to predict sucrose diffusivity in xanthan solutions. Molecular properties and rheological behavior of the system were considered in the modeling. The models tested fitted well the behavior of experimental data and that reported for oxygen in the same system.

Notes: Abstract  Three impeller-sparger configurations were used to evaluate the effect of different hydrodynamic conditions over fungal growth in rheologically complex cultures of Trichoderma harzianum using castor oil as sole carbon source. Three spargers (ring, sintered and 5-orifice) in combination with a turbine impeller system “TIS” (two Rushton turbines) or a hybrid impeller system “HIS” (Rushton turbine and a marine propeller as lower and upper impellers) were used. Their performance was assessed in terms of the response towards disturbance (PID oxygen control settings) and oxygen mass transfer (k L a). To avoid oxygen limitations, all cultures were controlled at 10% DOT by gas blending. Top to bottom mixing, and hence bulk blending, was improved when the – axial flow – HIS was used, ensuring phase interaction and substrate (oil) circulation. The 5-orifice sparger in combination with the TIS configuration yielded the longest lag phase and lowest k L a due to poor bulk blending and to the low gas–liquid interfacial area developed. The highest k L a was achieved with the sintered sparger-HIS probably due to considerable interfacial bubble area enhancement. However, growth limitation occurred as consequence of poor substrate availability as a stable air–oil emulsion was formed at the top of the tank. The best compromise between bulk blending (phase interaction), oxygen transfer (k L a) and fungal growth (growth rate) was achieved with the ring sparger-HIS configuration.

Notes: Abstract: The known level energies, electromagnetic moments and decay probabilities of high-spin states in the N = 46 isotones 86Zr, 87Nb, 88Mo, 89Tc, and 90Ru are interpreted within the shell model. The single-particle space was truncated to the p 1/2 and g 9/2 orbits (relative to the 88Sr core) and the single-particle energies and empirical two-body matrix elements derived by Gross and Frenkel were used in the calculations. Based on the generally good success of this approach, energies and decay properties of the yrast spectra in 90Ru and 91Rh are predicted.
