Notes: The preparation of vanadate glasses containing barium oxide and their electrical properties in the temperature range of 80–500 K have been reported in this article. Analysis of the electrical properties has been made in the light of different hopping models. The multiphonon assisted hopping model of small polarons in the nonadiabatic regime, proposed by D. Emin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 32, 303 (1974)] have been observed to describe the temperature dependence of the conductivity data of these glasses over the entire temperature range of measurement. The parameters obtained from the fits of the experimental data to this model are reasonable and consistent with the glass composition. J. Schnakenberg's model [Phys. Status Solidi 28, 623 (1968)] is also consistent with the temperature dependence of the conductivity data. Mott's optical phonon assisted hopping model at high temperatures provides smaller values of the localization length. However, Mott's variable range hopping model is valid at low temperatures. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The ablation of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) at both 248 and 193 nm has been studied using photoacoustic techniques. The acoustic responses of PMMA during the ablation process are resolved into a bipolar, thermal component, and a unipolar, ablative component. This latter component is correlated to the center-of-mass velocity of the ablated material. Fluence-dependent studies show that the fragment center-of-mass velocity increases with increasing fluence even after the etch rate has reached saturation. In addition, results are presented suggesting that an increase in the absorption of the laser radiation by the fragments occurs at fluences above ∼4 J/cm2 causing a change in the profile of the ablated area.

Notes: Summary. The maternal mortality rate in Hong Kong feil from 0·45/1000 total births in 1961 to 0·05/1000 total births in 1985. During the period between 1961 and 1985 there were a total of 438 maternal deaths and 2 193 012 births. Of the 438 deaths 150 (34%) were due to haemor-rhage during pregnancy and childbirth (ICD 640, 641, 666), 89 (20%) were due to pre-eclampsia (ICD 642, 643) and 60 (13·7%) were due to ectopic pregnancy (ICD 633). Comparison of maternal deaths by cause between the periods 1961–1965 and 1981–1985 showed an 86% reduc-tion in deaths due to haemorrhage and pre-eclampsia and a 72% reduc-tion in deaths due to ectopic pregnancy. Pulmonary embolism was not a major cause of maternal mortality.

Notes: Summary. Zinc concentration in serum and hair was measured in a cross-sectional study of 437 Chinese women of whom 310 were normal controls studied at various stages of pregnancy and up to 12 months after delivery. The rest had spontaneous abortions, fetuses with a birthweight below the 10th centile for gestation or congenital abnormalities. Zinc concentration fell throughout normal pregnancy, the fall being greater in serum than in hair. There was no correlation between serum and hair levels. The infant birthweight had a positive correlation with serum level but a negative correlation with hair level. Abortion, low birthweight and congenital abnormality were not associated with low concentrations of zinc in plasma or hair.

Notes: The dynamics of lithium ions in lithium bismuthate glasses have been studied in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 2 MHz and in the temperature range from 323 to 543 K. The composition dependence of the dc (direct current) conductivity has been explained in terms of the structure of bismuthate glasses. The activation energy has been analyzed in the framework of the Anderson–Stuart model. An additional energy term arising from the Madelung constant of glasses and the polarizability of the bismuth ions has been suggested to explain the discrepancy between the calculated and experimentally obtained values. The relaxation mechanism of these glasses has been explored by employing the modulus and conductivity formalisms and the microscopic parameters obtained from the analysis have been compared. Furthermore, the stretched exponential relaxation parameter and the dc conductivity have been correlated with the decoupling index. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have reported conductivity spectra at different temperatures for fluoride glasses of compositions 0.50ZrF4–(0.40−x)BaF2–0.10YF3–xNaF in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 2 MHz. We have analyzed the spectra using conductivity formalism and obtained the frequency exponent, concentration, and hopping frequency of charge carriers (F− ions) from the analysis. We have observed that the concentration of charge carriers is almost independent of temperature, but weakly dependent on composition, and the conductivity is essentially determined by the hopping frequency, i.e., the mobility. The frequency exponent is independent of temperature, but it shows very weak composition dependence. We have also presented a scaling of the conductivity spectra, which implies that the relaxation dynamics of charge carriers in fluoride glasses is independent of temperature and composition. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The MHC status of epithelial cells from 32 primary colorectal neoplasms, villous adenomata (VA; 2) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; 3) were evaluated using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Class I antigens and β2 microglobulin (β2m) were expressed on all normal, benign, inflammatory and malignant epithelia with the exception of two carcinomas. A more complex pattern of reactivity was encountered with anti-class II mAbs. Some expression was detected on normal glandular and luminal epithelium, particularly adjacent to the tumour. Inflammatory tissues, VA and 23/32 carcinomas were also antigen-positive, the proportion of stained epithelial cells ranging from 5% to 90%. Expression was usually non-coordinate, DR being the predominant specificity followed by DP and DQ, which is suggestive of independent D region gene regulation. The hypothesis that class II expression is induced in vivo by locally generated IFN γ was not confirmed by in vitro treatment with this agent of epithelial colorectal carcinoma-derived cell lines. These provisional data suggest that although IFN γ may be a necessary stimulus for class II expression it is insufficient and that other factors also influence the responsiveness of tumour cells in this respect.

Notes: Abstract Cosmic-ray propagation in the vicinity of 1 kpc from the Sun is considered. The data on the 1012–1015 eV particle anisotropy, on 1012 eV electron spectrum, and on temporal cosmic-ray variations are analyzed. The diffusion coefficientD(1012–1013 eV)=1029–1030 cm2s−1 inferred from the analysis coincides with its standard value in the large-halo model withh=15 kpc. The total power of cosmic-ray generation, about 3×1049 erg per SN in the proton component and about 1048 erg per SN in the electron component, typical of the galactic diffusion model is in agreement with the obtained parameters of local sources.

Notes: Abstract The initial and residual agronomic effectiveness of six apatite rock phosphates from India, one from the USA (North Carolina) and one from Australia (Queensland) were evaluated in a pot trial with wheat on a lateritic soil. All of the Indian rock phosphates were very poor sources of phosphorus. Values of initial effectiveness relative to monocalcium phosphate ranged from 〈 0.0001 to 0.02 and from 〈 0.0001 to 0.008 for measurements based on yield and phosphorus uptake respectively. The residual effectiveness relative to freshly applied monocalcium phosphate was determined by growing a second crop on the fertilized soils. The effectiveness of the Indian rock phosphates remained very low ranging from 〈 0.0001 to 0.002 and from 〈 0.0001 to 0.0004 for yield and phosphorus uptake respectively. Queensland and North Carolina rock phosphates were much superior to the Indian sources with initial effectiveness values in terms of yield of 0.08 and 0.37 and residual effectiveness values of 0.02 and 0.15 respectively. For each crop there was a single relationship between yield and phosphorus uptake (i.e. internal efficiency) for all phosphorus sources showing that variations in yield response were due solely to differences in phosphorus availability. Sodium bicarbonate extractable phosphorus values for fertilized soils sampled shortly after fertilization were not predictive of yield unless different calibration curves were used for the different phosphorus fertilizers.
