    Notes: Abstract HF radar data during equinoctial, small IMF By conditions have enabled the ionospheric convection during the substorm growth phase and substorm pseudobreakup to be studied in both hemispheres. This has revealed both conjugate and non-conjugate convection behaviour during the substorm growth phase before and after the pseudobreakup onset. The nightside convection pattern is found to respond promptly to the southward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) which impacts on the dusk flank of the magnetosphere due to an inclined phase front in the IMF in the case study presented. The subsequent interhemispheric observations of nightside convection are controlled by the IMF By polarity. The time scale for the response to changes in the IMF By component is found to be a little longer than for Bz, and the full impact of the IMF By is not apparent in the nightside convection until after substorm pseudobreakup has occurred. The pseudobreakup itself is found to result in a transitory suppression in the ionospheric electric field in both hemispheres. This flow suppression is very similar to that observed in HF radar observations of full substorm onset, with the exception of a lack of subsequent poleward expansion.

    Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of the absolute renal blood flow quantification using MRI and injection of contrast media. Using a T1-weighted fast gradient sequence following an intravenous bolus injection of Gd-DTPA, dynamic images of the kidney were obtained in patients with well-functioning native kidneys (n = 7) or transplant (n = 9), with significant renal artery stenosis (n = 4) and with renal failure (n = 7). After signal intensity calibration, the absolute renal perfusion was equal to the wash-in slope of the renal transit curve divided by the contrast medium concentration at the peak of the bolus in the aorta. The cortical blood flow was 2.54 ± 1.16 ml/min per gram in well-functioning kidneys decreasing to 1.09 ± 0.75 ml/min per gram in case of renal artery stenosis (p = 0.04) and to 0.51 ± 0.34 ml/min per gram in case of renal failure (p 〈 0.001). These measurements were in agreement with previous results obtained by other methods. A standard MRI imaging sequence and a simple model can provide realistic quantitative data on renal perfusion. This work justifies further studies to compare this model with a gold standard for renal blood flow measurements.

Expression of the 17nif genes inKlebsiella is regulated in response to the nitrogen source by the products of the nitrogen control genesntrA, ntrB andntrC. Nif transcription is also specifically regulated in response to oxygen and low levels of fixed nitrogen by the products of thenifLA operon. Promoters subject to negative regulation by thentrBC products contain a homologous sequence with dyad symmetry, indicative of a repressor binding site.Ntr-activatable promoters do not show homology with typicalEscherichia coli promoters but have a characteristic primary structure. The model we propose for regulation ofnif transcription has important consequences for genetic manipulation of existing diazotrophs and for obtaining expression of theKlebsiella nif gene cluster in other ‘prokaryotic-like’ environments such as the chloroplast.

    Notes: Abstract Annual application of NPK fertilizers over a 18 year period to coconut on red sandy loam soils resulted in a minimal increase in mineralisable N, but in a marked increase in available P and K. Plant N levels, however, reflected the improved N nutrition but did not reach sufficiency levels found elsewhere. An available P status of 15 ppm in the control plots kept leaf P at sufficiency levels. P fertilizers did not increase the P content of leaves. K fertilizers raised the K leaf content to sufficiency levels. Doubling the M1 fertilizer rates of 500 g N, 220 g P and 830 g K per palm per year had no effect on N, P and K levels in the palm leaves. Changes in K levels of the leaves had antagonistic effects on leaf Mg (r = − 0.68**) and leaf Na (r = − 0.87**). As this effect brings leaf Mg close to deficiency values palms receiving K might need additional Mg as well. The findings and interpretation of soil and leaf analysis data were confirmed by large yield responses to application of NPK fertilizers. Genetic differences between palms in their response to levels of nutrient supplies were apparent. The CDO × WCT hybrid outyielded the high yielding WCT variety especially when NPK was given at the M1 level. The response in yield to applied fertilizers was linear for WCT and curvilinear for the hybrids CDO × WCT and WCT × CDO.

    Notes: Abstract The electronic structure of V x Mo1−x (x=0.2; 0.4; 0.6; 0.75) solid solutions was studied by XPS and UPS. The density of states at the Fermi energy,N(E F), deduced from these measurements, shows a minimum as a function of the alloy concentration on the Mo rich side. This behaviour can be explained by band structure calculations and is in good agreement with previous NMR measurements. The relation between the electronic structure at the Fermi level and the superconducting properties is discussed. The band structure of the Mo rich alloys can be understood in terms of a rigid band model.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of supplying various metalviz. Pb, Cd, Al, Bi, Cr, Cu and Ba to the roots of coconut palms on the P, K, Ca and Mg concentration in the leaves of cocnut palms was investigated. The resuls showed that compared with the control the amount of leaf phosphorus was reduced by all the metals. The K concentration in the leaves was reduced by Al, Cd and Ba but increased by Bi and Cr. Leaf Ca concentration was decreased by Al and Pb treatments and increased by Cd, Cr and Ba. The amount of magnesium in the leaves was low in palms receiving the Al and the Cr but enhance by Pb.

    Notes: Abstract Effects of humidity and light conditions /fluoroscent light, sunlight and diffuse sunlight/ on the response of 2 mm thick clear polymethylmethacrylate /PMMA/ dosimeter during irradiation and during postirradiation storage were determined spectrophotometrically at 305 and 314 nm. The results showed that irradiation of dosimeters at 12–97% relative humidity did not result in any change in the response upto 2 weeks of post-irradiation storage. However, there is some decrease in the response at higher humidities /〉76%/ for longer storage time. Post-irradiation storage and dosimeters at constant relative humidity conditions between 35 and 97% had no effect on the response up-to 3 weeks. Post-irradiation storage at lower relative humidity /12%/ showed some decrease in the response for longer periods. The response of dosimeter is not very sensitive to short time exposure to diffuse sunlight and fluorescent light. However, a significant increase in the optical density was observed during exposure of dosimeters to direct sunlight.
