Notes: Abstract Copper ions and chelating agents in water were treated simultaneously by using a packed-bed electrode cell. The cathode packings were graphite particles or graphite felt; the anode packings were platinum-plated titanium pellets, β-PbO2 particles or oxidized lead spheres. The catholyte contained ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), iminodiacetic acid (IDA) or glycine chelate of copper, while the anolyte contained the corresponding chelating agents. The initial concentration of chelating agents was 0.01 M in each experiment. The electrowinning of copper and the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) were achieved in the cathodic and the anodic chamber, respectively, under galvanostatic conditions. The COD was determined by the standard KMnO4 method. Of the cathodic packings, the graphite felt gave better results than the graphite particles because of the large surface area of the felt. Of the anodic packings, the platinum-plated titanium pellets and the β-PbO2 particles showed equal suitability for COD removal. In the case of the platinum-plated titanium pellets, the current efficiency for COD removal of EDTA, NTA and IDA was 1.4, 0.7 and 0.32, respectively, in the range 0–12 kC. The removal of COD for EDTA, NTA and IDA under the same conditions was 41, 36 and 25%, respectively. In the lower pH range the electro-oxidation of EDTA proceeded more efficiently.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical results of current circulatory support with step-by evaluation of biventricular and pulmonary function. Six patients who had undergone cardiac surgery and two non-cardiotomy patients underwent current circulatory support with the step-by functional evaluation. Of six postcardiotomy patients, four patients with severe ischemic heart disease underwent coronary artery bypass giafting (CABG), and the remaining two patients with advanced aortic stenosis underwent aortic valve replacement (AVR). All six patients received intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support before or during operation. Two non-cardiotomy patients suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy, and both showed acute deterioration with cardiogenic shock or low cardiac output syndrome. Three of six postcardiotomy patients with circulatory support were weaned and discharged from the hospital. Two noncardiotomy patients in critical condition were successfully supported for more than 6 months by the Novacor left ventricular assist system (LVAS). We conclude that the ongoing current strategy of circulatory support with step-by functional evaluation might be applied for various types of severe heart failure with or without associated cardiac operations.

Notes: Summary Incidences of dystopia canthorum and some other signs were studied in a family with Waardenburg syndrome type I. When “W” index was used as a diagnostic parameter, dystopia canthorum was expressed in 88% of the family members who exhibited one or more of the signs, whereas incidence of this trait was calculated to be 63% or less, when the other indices were employed. Incidences of the other signs ranged from 50% to 13%. These observations indicate that W index is the most sensitive indicator of dystopia canthorum, and that this characteristic is most frequently expressed among the signs of Waardenburg syndrome type I.
