    Notes: We have studied the magnetoresistance in an inclined magnetic field of a two-dimensional electron gas modulated by a two-dimensional array of thin cobalt nanostructures. At low fields, hysteretic behavior due to the magnetization of the elements was observed, and at higher fields magnetic commensurability (Weiss) oscillations were clearly seen. These magnetoresistance features only occurred when the in-plane component of the field was in the current flow direction. The commensurability oscillations behave exactly as predicted in a recent theory of two-dimensional surface superlattices. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Short-period (Sim/Gen)N superlattices (SSLs) are grown step by step on a Si(001) substrates by solid source molecular beam epitaxy. Using the step-graded SSLs as buffer layers, 2000 Å uniform Si0.75Ge0.25 alloy layers are grown on the same substrates. The growth temperature of the SSLs and uniform layers is 500 °C. In the SSLs layers, m and n are the number of monolayers of Si and Ge, respectively. N is the period of (Sim/Gen) bilayers. The samples grown are characterized by x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as a function of the step number of SSL layers. The SSLs show very smooth surfaces [the root-mean-square (rms) surface roughness is between 7 and 12 Å]. A dramatic decrease in roughness is observed in the uniform Si0.75Ge0.25 alloy layers, when even a one-step SSL is used as a buffer layer. A noticeable increase in rms roughness is seen in both SSL and alloy layers when the number of Ge monolayers is changed from one to two. AFM observation shows that the rms surface roughness behavior of the SSLs is reflected to their corresponding top alloy layers. The residual strains in alloy layers are considerably lower, with a maximum relaxation rate of about 80% for the sample with a seven-step SSL buffer. Cross-sectional TEM images show that strained SSL buffer layers effectively deflect threading dislocations in the substrate or confine the dislocations in the SSL buffer layers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Calreticulin (CRT) is a major classic Ca-binding chaperone protein of the endoplasmic reticulum. Recently, CRT has been recognized to have widespread extracellular effects as well. In the current study we show that CRT increases both epithelial migration and granulation tissue formation in models of porcine and murine wound repair. Partial thickness wounds were created on the paravertebral area of pigs (n = 4) and 0.1% and 0.5% CRT, and PDGF (positive control) applied for 4 consecutive days. In wounds harvested at 5 days, CRT induced a 28 and 22% greater extent of reepithelialization than PDGF and Tris/Ca buffer control, respectively (% healed = 56/CRT; 40.5/PDGF; 44/control). In addition, CRT stimulated earlier granulation tissue formation in a dose-dependent manner (cumulative dermal depth, microns: 1615/CRT; 1250/PDGF; 1325/control). A similar granulation tissue inducing effect of CRT was also observed in a steroid-impaired pig model. As a diabetic model of wound repair, two 5 mm circular full-thickness wounds were created on the dorsum of db/db mice; the wounds were splinted open with silicone rings and covered with occlusive dressing (n = 24). After 5 days of treatment with 0.1, 0.5, and 5% CRT, a dose-dependent 8-, 4.5-, and 2-fold increase in granulation tissue formation was observed (p 〈 0.05). However, there was no apparent effect on wound closure. Tissue sections showed a highly cellular dermis in the CRT treated wounds. In addition, CRT (50 pg/ml) stimulated wound closure in a scratch plate assay using fibroblasts by 45%, in 48 hrs, compared to 2% for the control. Therefore, CRT may be a novel agent for wound healing by acting as a chemoattractant for cells involved in wound remodeling and in epithelial migration.Suppported by Calretex, LLC.     Notes: Background: The common electrocardiographic subclassification of anterior acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is not reliable in presenting the exact location of the infarct. We investigated the relationship between predischarge electrocardiographic patterns and the extent and location of perfusion defects in 55 patients with first anterior AMI. Methods: Predischarge electrocardiogram was examined for residual ST elevations and Q waves which were correlated with technetium-99m-sestamibi function and perfusion scans. Results: Patients with ST elevations in V2–V4 and Q waves in leads V3–V5 had worse global perfusion scores. Perfusion defects in the apex inferior segment were significantly less frequent in patients with Q waves in leads I and aVL (11% vs 54%, P = 0.027; and 22% vs 60%, P = 0.011, respectively). Patients with Q wave in aVF had more frequently involvement of the apex inferior segment (80% vs 40%; P = 0.035). Patients with Q wave in lead II had significantly more frequent perfusion defects in the inferior wall. ST elevation in V3 and V4 was associated with perfusion abnormalities of the infero-septal segments. ST elevation in V5 and V6 and Q wave in V5 were associated with regional perfusion defects in apical inferior segment (73% vs 30%, P = 0.002), extending into the mid inferior segment (55% vs 18%, P = 0.005 for Q wave in V5). Q wave in lead aVL is associated with less apical and inferior involvement. Q waves in leads II and aVF are a sign of inferior extension of the infarction. Conclusions: Residual ST elevation in leads V3 and V4 are more frequently associated with involvement of the apical-inferoseptal segment rather than the anterior wall. Residual ST elevation and Q waves in V5 are related to a more inferior rather than a lateral involvement.

    Notes: Measurements of photoluminescence intensity from GaAs and InGaAs quantum well heterostructures have been used as a noninvasive probe of the damage distribution due to very low-power dry etching. Samples were etched using SiCl4 reactive-ion etching. Comparative studies were made on samples bombarded by the separate constituent ions of a SiCl4 discharge using a mass-resolving ion implanter fitted with a deceleration lens. We also examined the influence of more complex multicomponent discharges. We found that molecular ions contribute less to deep damage than do atomic ions. The reason is that molecular ions fragment upon impact and the secondary atomic ions do not channel very far. Studies of laser illumination on the sample during etching show that a form of radiation-enhanced diffusion can modify the damage distribution. The net picture emerges of a complex process underlying dry-etch damage penetration at very low energies. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary. Hydatid disease of the female pelvis is rare in gynaecological practice. In Libya, where the disease is endemic, 14 women with pelvic hydatid disease were encountered in one hospital department between 1971 and 1979. Five of these women were pregnant, a hospital prevalence of 1 in 20000. The other nine women accounted for 0.3% of all gynaecological laparotomies in the same hospital. The clinical features, diagnosis and management of this rare condition are described.

    Notes: We have studied the effect of low-index channeling on sidewall dry-etch damage. A quantum electron beam in the two-dimensional electron gas of a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure was used to probe electrical damage at a specific depth down an etched sidewall. In analyzing the measured behavior as a function of etch time we have developed a model for the sidewall damage distribution that takes into account the geometry of the 〈110〉 channels in detail. The analysis shows that more damage is possible beneath regions of high topography than is usually assumed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Nitrogen-doped hydrogenated amorphous carbon films have been deposited on silicon substrates by radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using different N2/CH4 gas ratios from 0 to 3. The real and imaginary parts, n and k, of the complex index of refraction of these films have been determined for wavelengths between 300 and 830 nm by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Excellent agreement has been found between measured and modeled spectra, in which an empirical dielectric function based on classical Lorentz oscillator and Tauc joint density of states, and a linear void distribution along the thickness of the films have been assumed. Decrease in the optical energy gap and increase in the extinction coefficient, k, with increase in nitrogen concentration have been observed. Refractive index, n, increases rapidly with increase in nitrogen concentration up to 6.8 at. % (∼7.0 at. %) and then increases slowly with further increase in nitrogen concentration. For all the samples, n is found to be highest at the film-substrate interface which gradually decreases towards the film surface. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
