    Notes: Thin films of Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) were prepared by hybrid processing (sol-gel and excimer laser ablation) on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. Crystalline phases and microstructures of the PZT films were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Electrical properties of the films were evaluated by measuring their P-E hysteresis loops and dielectric constants. The temperature of postdeposition annealing in hybrid processing was lower than that in the case of direct film deposition by laser ablation on a Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate. The preferred orientation of the films derived by hybrid processing could be controlled using the seeding layer deposited by the sol-gel process. The films fabricated by hybrid processing consisted of the perovskite phase with a (111) preferred orientation and had good ferroelectric properties.

    Notes: Optimum parameters in the thermomechanical treatment during grain boundary engineering (GBE) were investigated for improvement of intergranular corrosion resistance of type 304 austenitic stainless steel. The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) was examined by orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The intergranular corrosion resistance was evaluated by electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) and ferric sulfate-sulfuric acid tests. Thesensitivity to intergranular corrosion was reduced by the thermomechanical treatment and indicated a minimum at a small roll-reduction. The frequency of coincidence-site-lattice (CSL) boundaries indicated a maximum at the small pre-strain. The ferric sulfate-sulfuric acid test showed much smaller corrosion rate in the thermomechanical-treated specimen than in the base material for long time sensitization. The optimum thermomechanical treatment introduced a high frequency of CSL boundaries and the clear discontinuity of corrosive random boundary network in the material, and resulted in the high intergranular corrosion resistance arresting the propagation of intergranular corrosion from the surface

    Notes: Abstract The possible dislocation reactions in coincidence boundaries with Σ ≦19 in fee and b cc crystals were systematically analysed in consideration of energetics according to the coincidence site lattice theory. The elastic energy reduction during dissociation of lattice dislocations suggests to be more easily absorbed into coincidence boundaries with large Σ-values. Transmission electron microscopy showed a large difference in the absorption rate between coincidence and random boundaries in crept specimens. The absorption of the lattice dislocation depends strongly on its Burger's vector even in the same grain boundary. Experimental results showed that most of EGBDs observed in the coincidence boundaries were of the Burger's vectors which give rise to smaller energy reduction due to the dissociation reaction.
