    Notes: The purpose of this investigation was to validate the use of vaginal photoplethysmography along with six other physiological measures for the assessment of sexual arousal in women. Six women in counterbalanced order were presented control, dysphoric, and sexually arousing videotapes. Subjective ratings revealed that subjects experienced moderate levels of sexual and anxiety arousal during the videotapes, and comprehension quizzing at the end of the experiment showed that subjects attended to the content. Heart rate, heart rate variability, and skin conductance response failed to discriminate between any of the videotapes. In order from highest to lowest sensitivity, vaginal blood volume, skin conductance, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and forehead temperature showed significant increases during the erotic videotape. Though sensitive, skin conductance appeared to he unreliable. Areas for further research were identified.

    Notes: The design, construction, and use of a furnace from which time-resolved x-ray diffraction data may be measured from reacting mixtures of solids or of solids and liquids is described. The furnace is a vertical tube design, constructed from commercially available components, and can operate at temperatures of up to 1000 °C. The apparatus is designed to heat sample tubes of up to 3 cm diameter. The use of high-intensity synchrotron-generated white-beam x rays allows the tube and its contents to be penetrated; thus x-ray diffraction data can be measured from reactions taking place in laboratory-sized reaction vessels. The energy-dispersive diffraction geometry allows rapid data collection (of the order of seconds); hence reactions can be followed continuously in real time. The use of the furnace is demonstrated by results from experiments performed on Station 16.4 of the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source, UK. Two distinct reaction types are studied, both used to prepare the layered perovskite RbCa2Nb3O10: first, a solid state route at 800 °C and second a flux route, performed in molten RbCl, also at 800 °C. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Whistler wave dispersion measurements are done in a linear magnetized helicon plasma experiment. The waves are excited by an induction loop and detected by movable magnetic probes for a frequency range of 100–800 MHz, corresponding to 0.05–0.9 ωce. The dispersion of whistler waves is measured for various plasma densities and magnetic field strengths. A key issue is to study the transition from an unbounded to bounded plasma wave dispersion. A comparison with theoretically derived dispersion relations is made. For small wavelengths, the dispersion can be described with whistler wave theory for unbounded plasmas whereas for larger wavelengths, the bounded geometry must be taken into consideration. The experimental results agree with theoretical dispersion relations derived for the bounded and the unbounded situation. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experimental observation of the propagation of periodic ion phase space vortices is reported. Density fluctuation measurements in a double plasma device show an apparently spontaneous acceleration of these periodic structures from ion thermal to ion acoustic velocity. A nonlinear kinetic description explains this as a transition from a new type of nonlinear electrostatic mode (periodic ion holes) to an ion acoustic mode which is caused by trapped particle scattering. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Endosulfine (EDSF) belongs to a highly conserved cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein (ARPP) family and was first isolated from ovine brain as a possible endogenous ligand for sulfonylurea receptors. To explore its involvement in brain functions, we investigated regional distribution of α-EDSF gene expression in the rat brain, and its regulation under physiological and pathological conditions. The majority of α-EDSF gene was expressed in the pyramidal neurons, which represent the principal excitatory neurons in various brain regions. Down-regulation of α-EDSF mRNA was detected in the rat hippocampus during long-term memory consolidation following a spatial learning experience, whereas swimming-related stress caused persistent up-regulation of α-EDSF gene expression in several brain regions. These changes, however, were absent from brains of diabetic rats that were subjected to the same behavioral treatments. Intracerebroventricular injection of streptozocin with a toxic dose induced severe learning deficits and brain structure alteration accompanied by a massive increase of α-EDSF mRNA in the somatosensory cortex. These results suggest that α-EDSF gene expression is differentially regulated by distinct brain processes involving excitatory neuronal activities.

    Notes: The present study was aimed at deciphering whether the delay in choice reaction time (RT) and the silent period (SP) caused by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the motor cortex in the ongoing electromyogram are due to the same physiological mechanism. To this end, the effect of TMS was studied in 6 healthy volunteers performing a between-hand choice RT task. Specific predictions were derived from a logic inspired from the “postponed stages” hypothesis (Pashler & Johnson, 1989). This logic predicts a correlation between SP duration and RT when the stimulated cortex is involved in the response, and a stronger correlation when the stimulation is delivered later during the RT interval. The effect of TMS on RT was twofold: At early stimulation times, the stimulation shortened the RT and this effect was independent of the involvement of the stimulated motor cortex in the subsequent response. At later stimulation times, TMS had a disruptive effect, provided that the stimulated cortex was involved in the response. When the stimulated cortex was involved in the response, there was a correlation between SP and RT; this correlation was stronger when the stimulation occurred later. In contrast, there was no correlation between these two variables when the stimulated cortex was not involved.

    Notes: The activity of the agonist muscles was recorded during the performance of a two-choice visual reaction time (RT) task in which the compatibility of the stimulus–response mapping was manipulated. Correct trials were distinguished according to whether or not the activation of the agonist of the required response was preceded by an activation of the agonist of the nonrequired response. Double activation trials were more numerous for the incompatible than for the compatible mapping. Furthermore, these trials yielded longer RTs than the single muscular activation trials. These results suggest that initial activations of nonrequired responses are more frequently aborted and corrected when the mapping is incompatible than when it is compatible. This finding supports the dimensional overlap model of stimulus–response compatibility (S. Kornblum, T. Hasbroucq, & A. Osman, 1990).
