Notes: Surface–specific sum–frequency vibrational spectroscopy and second-harmonic generation have been used to study the structure of a rubbed polystyrene (PS) surface and the orientation of 4′-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal molecules on it. The results show that the phenyl sidegroups are well aligned by rubbing in the direction perpendicular to rubbing but tilt from the surface normal with a broad distribution. Although the PS surface is nonpolar, the 5CB molecules appear to adsorb on PS preferentially with the terminal cyano group facing the PS surface. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to study how side alkyl chains of a polyimide are oriented at the air–polymer interface and how they are affected by mechanical rubbing and adsorption of a liquid crystal monolayer. The spectra of polyimides with various alkyl chain lengths all indicate that the chains protrude out of the polyimide surface with a very broad distribution. Longer alkyl chains appear to contain more gauche defects. While the polyimide backbones are aligned by rubbing, the side chain orientation is hardly affected. Adsorption of a liquid crystal monolayer on the surface significantly reduces the gauche defects in the alkyl chains. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Recently, sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy has been developed into a powerful technique to study surfaces of polymer materials. This review summarizes the significant achievements in understanding surface molecular chemical structures of polymer materials obtained by SFG. It reviews in situ detection at the molecular level of surface structures of some common polymers in air, surface segregation of small end groups, polymer surface restructuring in water, and step-wise changed polymer blend surfaces. Studies of surface glass transition and surface structures modified by rubbing, plasma deposition, UV light irradiation, oxygen ion and radical irradiation, and wet etching are also discussed. SFG probing of polymer surfaces provides valuable insights into the relations between polymer surface structures and surface properties, which will assist in the design of polymer materials with desired surface properties.

Notes: Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy was used to study how linearly polarized UV irradiation could cause bond breaking and alter the surface structure of a polyimide. The spectroscopic results allowed the determination of an approximate orientational distribution of the polymer backbones at a rubbed surface. They also permitted deduction of rates of bond breaking of the backbones at the surface by UV dosage. The surface anisotropy resulting from bond breaking by linearly polarized UV irradiation was found to be relatively small, suggesting a weak azimuthal anchoring energy for liquid crystal films deposited on such a surface. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We have studied experimentally self-focusing of light in the liquid crystalline mediump-ethoxybenzyldine-p-butylaniline (EBBA). By variation of temperature, the response time of the field-induced refractive index was adjusted from larger than to smaller than theQ-switched laser pulsewidth. Accordingly, self-focusing varied from transient to quasi-steady-state. The results agree well with existing theoretical predictions and can be qualitatively understood from a simple physical description. The induced stimulated Brillouin scattering was also measured and was shown to be responsible for the limiting diameter of the self-focused beam in the present case.
