Notes: Cervical cytology EQA – the Northern experience The experience of the Northern region using the 1995 draft National Gynaecological Cervical Cytology External Quality Assurance (EQA) Scheme is given. Over three rounds, 390 staff reporting Cervical Cytology took part, and using a cumulative non-numeric marking scheme, five participants were deemed ‘unacceptable’ at the end of three rounds. A total of 3450 responses were given to the 40 test slides used, with an overall false-positive rate of 5.9% and a false-negative rate of 1.4%. Grading was assessed for pathologists, and many appeared to perform badly by accumulating discrepancies for non-clinically-significant grading differences. The problems of slide selection/staining and grading consistency/accuracy are highlighted. This EQA scheme serves its dual function of education and identifying poor performance. It must be seen as a viable EQA scheme, although other options must be considered, given advances in technology.

Notes: Evidence for direct learning curve for technique on change of cervical sampling device The recommended sampling device within the NHS Cervical Screening Programme is the Aylesbury spatula. A local decision was taken to decrease brush usage (either alone or in combination) by 50% from an initial level of 41.8%, with an initial inadequate smear rate of 9.93%. This was managed by controlling smear taking equipment through provision of smear taking kits. The monthly inadequate rate unexpectedly rose to 17.8% before dropping back to previous levels. Brush usage overall fell to 35.2%, with a corresponding increase in spatula use. The possible reasons for this are discussed. The facts suggest that these changes were directly linked, and that there is a learning curve with change of sampling device and that a rise in the inadequate rate should be expected under these circumstances.

Notes: [Auszug] A new design of gassing cell (Fig. 1) was used to measure the gassing rates. No radical change has been made in the basic design, since the concentric electrode system, a feature common to most other cells, has been retained. The design is such that hydrocarbons can be saturated with hydrogen after ...

Notes: [Auszug] We report here a series of experiments in vitro to clarify the direct effect of copper on the embryo; these demonstrated that copper is toxic to the embryo. The techniques for obtaining, handling, and culturing the embryos have been previously described5'6. Embryos were placed in small droplets ...

Notes: Abstract The use of a scanning electron microscope in studying the fractography of fibres is described and its advantages explained. A common pattern of break is shown for thermoplastic fibres at extension rates up to 8×10−2 sec−1. This involves a slow crack which becomes catastrophic at the critical crack length. The critical crack length depends upon the rate of extension, and possibly other undetermined factors. Under some conditions other forms of break are observed in thermoplastic fibres. A qualitative interpretation of the fracture phenomena is proposed.
