Notes: A Stokesian dynamics constraint algorithm for the irreversible deposition of colloidal particles onto a surface is presented. This algorithm can also be used to simulate a variety of nondeposition phenomena and with any method for computing the hydrodynamic interactions among the particles. In particular, a multipole scheme we recently described for computing the mobility matrix of colloidal particles, with or without the presence of a wall, is used here in conjunction with the new deposition algorithm to perform Stokesian dynamics irreversible deposition simulations on a group of 75 colloidal particles. Deposition simulations are performed with and without the hydrodynamic effect of the wall (substrate) being included in the mobility matrix. The results of the simulations lead to important qualitative conclusions on the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on the deposition process, in particular the hydrodynamic effect of the wall. In addition, the simulations serve to illustrate the performance of the new deposition algorithm. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Density functional calculations on carbonic acid H2CO3 are extended to clusters of up to five such units. The most stable forms are the linear, hydrogen-bonded analogs of the dimer with anti–anti orientation. We calculate structures and vibration frequencies, as well as the energy required to bend and stretch the linear isomers. Linear chains of up to ∼20 units should be favored over ring structures, and they have a tensile strength reminiscent of chains of water molecules. We also discuss planar, nonlinear structures as well as three-dimensional isomers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Serum cholesterol and lipoprotein-triglyceride were measured in 38 women before and during treatment with the progestogen, norethisterone, as part of a trial of the agent for use as an oral contraceptive. Levels of cholesterol and lipoprotein-triglyceride were found to fall during treatment. Before starting treatment with norethisterone some of the subjects had been taking either combined oestrogenl progestogen preparations or chlormadinone acetate as oral contraceptives. The fall in cholesterol levels appeared to be more marked in these women than in those not previously treated. The fall in lipoprotein-triglyceride was of a similar degree in those not pretreated and those previously taking combined oestrogen/progestogen contraceptives.

Notes: This article describes a wide-field time-domain fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) microscope with optical sectioning. The FLIM system utilizes a wide-field time-gated optical image intensifier, with a minimum gate width of 85 ps, to achieve high temporal resolution of fluorescence decays induced by ultrashort laser pulses. Different configurations, using excitation pulses of picojoule energy at 80 MHz repetition rate and of nanojoule energy at 10 kHz, are compared. The instrument has a temporal dynamic range spanning from 100 ps to tens of μs and is shown to have a temporal discrimination better than 10 ps. When applied to laser dye samples, it has produced FLIM maps demonstrating sensitivity to variations in both chemical species and local environment, e.g., viscosity. Wide-field optical sectioning is achieved using the technique of structured illumination, which is applied to remove out-of-focus light that can result in lifetime artifacts. The sectioning strength, which may be adjusted by choosing an appropriate spatial modulation frequency, is characterized and shown to be comparable to that of a confocal microscope. Practical considerations concerned with improving the quality of sectioned fluorescence lifetime maps, including using a large bit depth camera, are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
