    Notes: Background and objectives In developing countries, caring for the large number of babies in orphanages is very hard work. Whereas the physical needs of most of the children are met, play often gets neglected. Studies have repeatedly shown that babies in such institutionalized settings suffer from severe psychomotor retardation. The aim of this project was to develop an intervention programme of structured play. We hypothesized that such an intervention would result in acceleration of psychosocial development in otherwise healthy institutionalized children. Design Prospective longitudinal. Setting Mother Teresa’s Orphanage, run by Missionaries of Charity. Subject and methods All 30 children in the orphanage aged 6 months–2.5 years, were assessed for their Motor, Mental and Social Quotients, using the Indian adaptation of Bailey’s Scale of Infant Development(DASII) and the Vineland’s Social Maturity Scale. A structured ‘Regime of Play’ was then built into the routine of the orphanage. A repeat developmental assessment was performed at the end of 3 months to assess the impact. Results Out of the original cohort of 30, 19 children were available for post-intervention assessments. The remainder were adopted before their assessments. Their mean Motor Quotient rose from 63.7 to 81.7, mean Mental Quotient rose from 65.8 to 89.6 and the mean Social Quotient rose from 61.9 to 91.3, a gain of 18, 23 and 30 points respectively (p 〈 0.0001). There was also an overall change in the environment of the orphanage. Children became more active, playful, responsive and independent. Contrary to what caretakers assumed, their workload actually decreased. The responsiveness in the children awakened as a result of play, acted as a positive feedback for caretakers to continue the play sessions. Conclusions This study shows that short daily sessions of play can significantly improve the development of children in such institutions. It is vital to remember that children grow ‘Not by Bread Alone’.

    Notes: Abstract  Inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) polymorphism was used to determine genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in Oryza. Forty two genotypes including 17 wild species, representing AA,BB,CC,EE,FF,GG,BBCC,CCDD, and HHJJgenomes, two cultivated species, Oryza sativa (AA) and Oryza glaberrima (AA), and three related genera, Porteresia coarctata, Leersia and Rhynchoryza subulata, were used in ISSR analysis. A total of 30 ISSR primers were screened representing di-, tri-, tetra- and penta-nucleotide repeats, of which 11 polymorphic and informative patterns were selected to determine the genetic diversity. The consensus tree constructed using binary data from banding patterns generated by ISSR-PCR clustered 42 genotypes according to their respective genomes. ISSR analysis suggests that the genus Oryza may have evolved following a polyphyletic pathway; Oryza brachyantha (FF genome) is the most divergent species in Oryza and Oryza australiensis (EE genome) does not fall under the Officinalis complex. DNA profiles based on ISSR markers have revealed potential diagnostic fingerprints for various species and genomes, and also for individual accessions/cultivars. Additionally ISSR revealed 87 putative genome/species-specific molecular markers for eight of the nine genomes of Oryza. The ISSR markers are thus useful in the fingerprinting of cultivated and wild species germplasm, and in understanding the evolutionary relationships of Oryza.

    Notes: Abstract Mesocarbon microbeads are now-a-days used as a prominent self-sintering precursor for the production of high density monolithic graphite. The quality of this graphite is highly dependent on the characteristics of these microbeads, such as the quinoline and toluene insoluble contents, β-resins content and volatile matter content, which in turn, can be controlled to desired values by suitable treatments of their extraction and calcination. In the present paper, the authors give an account of the study conducted to see the effect of calcination conditions of mesocarbon microbeads on the characteristics of the resulting graphite. A calcination at a temperature in the range of 280–320 °C for 30 min. under an ambient pressure of nitrogen, or at a temperature of 245–310 °C for 10 min. under a reduced pressure (5 cm Hg) of nitrogen, results in mesocarbon microbeads having a quinoline insoluble content of 83.6–89.8%, toluene insoluble content of 94.4–99.7%, β-resins content of 6.8–11.9% and a volatile matter content of 10.2–13.5%. Such microbeads have been found to lead to a monolithic graphite possessing a bulk density 1.91–2.02 g cm−3, bending strength of 62–70 MPa, Shore hardness of 58–69, electrical resistivity of 2.1–2.6 mΩ cm and a degree of anisotropy of 1.02–1.05.
