    Notes: A numerical model is used to simulate the fingering and splashing of a droplet impacting a solid surface. A methodology is presented for perturbing the velocity of fluid near the solid surface at a time shortly after impact. Simulation results are presented of the impact of molten tin, water, and heptane droplets, and compared with photographs of corresponding impacts. Agreement between simulation and experiment is good for a wide range of behaviors. An expression for a splashing threshold predicts the behavior of the molten tin. The results of water and especially heptane, however, suggest that the contact angle plays an important role, and that the expression may be applicable only to impacts characterized by a relatively low value of the Ohnesorge number. Various experimental data of the number of fingers about an impacting droplet agree well with predictions of a previously published correlation derived from application of Rayleigh–Taylor instability theory. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The septins are GTPase enzymes with multiple roles in cytokinesis, cell polarity or exocytosis. The proteins from the mammalian septin genes are called Sept1–10. Most are expressed in multiple tissues, but the mRNA for Sept5 (CDCrel-1) and Sept3 (G-septin) appear to be primarily expressed in brain. Sept3 is phosphorylated by cGMP-dependent protein kinase I (PKG-I) and the cGMP/PKG pathway is involved in presynaptic plasticity. Therefore to determine whether Sept3 specifically associates with neurones and nerve terminals we investigated its distribution in rat brain and neuronal cultures. Sept3 protein was detected only in brain by immunoblot, but not in 12 other tissues examined. Levels were high in all adult brain regions, and reduced in those enriched in white matter. Expression was developmentally regulated, being absent in the early embryo, low in late embryonic rat brain and increasing after birth. Like dynamin I, Sept3 was specifically enriched in synaptosomes compared with whole brain, and was only found in a peripheral membrane extract and not in the soluble or membrane extracts. Sept3 was particularly abundant in mossy fibre nerve terminals in the hippocampus. In primary cultured hippocampal neurones Sept3 immunoreactivity was punctate in neurites and predominantly localized to presynaptic terminals, strongly colocalizing with synaptophysin and dynamin I. The specific nerve terminal localization was confirmed by immunogold electron microscopy. Together this shows that Sept3 is a neurone-specific protein highly enriched in nerve terminals which supports a secretory role in synaptic vesicle recycling.

    Notes: The rates for nucleation (I) and crystal growth (U) for a lithium disilicate (Li2O·2SiO2, LS2) glass were determined, as a function of temperature, using a new differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique. This technique requires in situ nucleation and crystal-growth heat treatment of a small amount of powdered sample inside the DTA apparatus, which then are followed by a DTA scan at a constant heating rate. The I and U values that have been determined at selected temperatures for the LS2 glass are in excellent agreement with those reported in the literature. The technique also has been used to determine the concentration of quenched-in nuclei in LS2 glasses prepared from melts that have been quenched at different rates, which are in reasonable agreement with those estimated from theoretical considerations. This new DTA technique is less tedious, requires a smaller amount of sample, and is at least 10 times faster than the conventional methods that have been used to measure I and U. Also, no special sample preparation, other than simply grinding and screening the glass to a particle size that is suitable for use, is required in this technique, whereas grinding, polishing, or etching is required in conventional methods. The excellent agreement in the I or U values that have been determined for the LS2 glass via the present and conventional methods demonstrates the accuracy, validity, and usefulness of this DTA method for rapid determination of the nucleation and crystal-growth rates in glasses.

    Notes: We examined a sample of 120 Norwegian, founding family controlled and non-founding family controlled firms, to address two important research questions: (1) is founding family control associated with higher firm value; and (2) are there unique corporate governance conditions under which a founding family controlled firm can be more valuable? We find a positive association between founding family control and firm value for four alternative definitions of founding family control. We find that the association between founding family CEOs and firm value is stronger among younger firms, firms with smaller boards, and firms with a single class of shares. However, the impact of founding family directors on firm value is not affected by corporate governance conditions such as firm age, board independence, and number of share classes. We also find that the relation between founding family ownership and firm value is greater among older firms, firms with larger boards, and particularly when these firms have multiple classes of shares. Our results imply that founding family controlled firms are more valuable and governed differently than firms without such influence. Furthermore, our results also suggest that founding family CEOs can enhance firm performance when family influence does not create shareholder entrenchment or when their cash flow rights are more aligned with their control rights.

    Notes: Assessment of genetic diversity in a crop species is prerequisite to its improvement. The use of germplasm with distinct DNA profiles will help to generate genetically diversified breeding populations. The aims of the present experiment were to study molecular diversity among selected groundnut accessions and identify those with distinct DNA profiles for mapping and genetic enhancement. Twenty-six accessions and eight primers of a 10-mer were selected for random amplified polymorphic DNA assay. The genetic similarity (Sij) ranged from 59.0% to 98.8%, with an average of 86.2%. Both multidimensional scaling and unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) dendrograms revealed the existence of five distinct clusters. However, this classification could not be related to known biological information about the accessions falling into different clusters. Some accessions with diverse DNA profiles (ICG 1448, 7101, and 1471, and ICGV 99006 and 99014) were identified for mapping and genetic enhancement in groundnut.

    Notes: We have built a homology model of the AAA domain of the ATP-dependent protease FtsH of Escherichia coli based on the crystal structure of the hexamerization domain of N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein. The resulting model of the hexameric ring of the ATP-bound form of the AAA ATPase suggests a plausible mechanism of ATP binding and hydrolysis, in which invariant residues of Walker motifs A and B and the second region of homology, characteristic of the AAA ATPases, play key roles. The importance of these invariant residues was confirmed by site-directed mutagenesis. Further modelling suggested a mechanism by which ATP hydrolysis alters the conformation of the loop forming the central hole of the hexameric ring. It is proposed that unfolded polypeptides are translocated through the central hole into the protease chamber upon cycles of ATP hydrolysis. Degradation of polypeptides by FtsH is tightly coupled to ATP hydrolysis, whereas ATP binding alone is sufficient to support the degradation of short peptides. Furthermore, comparative structural analysis of FtsH and a related ATPase, HslU, reveals interesting similarities and differences in mechanism.
