Notes:
Summary The obtained findings are corresponding with earlier investigations to a great extent. Until after delivery an increase of the general coagulability of the blood is taking place (heparin tolerance test). This goes along with a rise of fibrinogen, an increase of the Quick value, a slight elevation of prothrombin and of the factors V, IX, X and a marked rise of concentration of factor VII. Any alterations of factor VIII could not be proved. During the third stage of labor we are noting a decrease of the general coagulability, a fall of fibrinogen, of prothrombin and of the factors V, IX, X, possibly indicating an increased consumption of clotting factors. The Quick value and the factors VII and VIII do not show any alterations during the placental period. Altogether the observed alterations during the third stage of labor are showing-with the tendency at least- the same course as seen in a pathologically occurring consumptive coagulopathy. In cases where the third stage of labor is proceeding without interference the clotting reaction should be altered more intensively than in those which are managed actively.
