Abstract Raman spectra were obtained for alcohol solutions with inert solvents such asCCl4, CHCl3, etc. The frequency of the OH stretching vibrations[νOH(free) band]due to free hydrogen bonds varies with change in either alcohol or inert solvent. It is shown that the frequency of the νOH(free) band is sensitive to the shape ofthe head group of an inert solvent. The main cause for the frequency change ofthe νOH(free) band with change in alcohol is ascribed to the change of effectivemass of the vibrating unit (RO-H, R = alkyl group).
