Notes: Abstract  Following mating, female bushcrickets undergo a refractory period during which they are sexually unreceptive. The length of the refractory period correlates with the size of the spermatophylax. However, the size of the nuptial gift of acoustically signalling bushcrickets is often reduced as a result of infections by parasitoid flies. We examined the effect of male parasitoid infection on the induction of the refractory period and fecundity of females. We found a drastically reduced refractory period in females if the first mating partner was infected. During this shortened period fewer eggs were deposited, as an effect of the shorter refractory period, whereas the daily egg-laying rate remained the same regardless of whether the females were mated with a parasitized or an unparasitized male.

Notes: A molecular beam spectrometer capable of achieving sub-Doppler resolution at 2 eV (∼18 000 cm−1) of vibrational excitation is described and its performance demonstrated using the CH stretch chromophore of HCN. Two high finesse resonant power-buildup cavities are used to excite the molecules using a sequential double resonance technique. A v=0→2 transition is first saturated using a 1.5 μm color center laser, whereupon a fraction of the molecules is further excited to the v=6 level using an amplitude modulated Ti:Al2O3 laser. The energy absorbed by the molecules is detected downstream of both excitation points by a cryogenically cooled bolometer using phase sensitive detection. A resolution of approximately 15 MHz (i.e., three parts in 108) is demonstrated by recording a rotational line in the v=6 manifold of HCN. Scan speeds of up to several cm−1/h were obtained, with signal-to-noise ratios in excess of 100. The high signal-to-noise ratio and a dynamic range of 6×104 means that future experiments to study statistical intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution in small molecules and unimolecular isomerizations can be attempted. We would also like to point out that, with improved metrology in laser wavelengths, this instrument can also be used to provide improved secondary frequency standards based upon the rovibrational spectra of molecules. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on spontaneous and directed succession on a dry sandy landfill site of low fertility at Berlin-Malchow, Germany. Changes in species composition and cover were followed on unmown and mown permanent plots of 2 × 2 m size through 5 years of vegetation development. Species richness on unmown plots was relatively constant during the time of observation, with 20 to 25 species per 4 m2. Total cover of unmown plots continuously increased from approximately 10% in the first year to 80% in the fifth year. There are no clearly discernible sequential successional stages until present. The species composition includes species of all life forms, which colonized the site immediately after the initiation of the succession process representing the initial floristic composition type of vegetation development. However, perennial grasses and herbs gradually increased in cover up to approximately 40%. Woody plants were also present from the first year of succession and increased up to more than 20% cover in the fifth year, forming a shrub layer (〉0.5 m) after the second year. Mowing significantly increased species richness, which was evident from the third year onward. This effect was mainly due to the reduction of the tall perennial grass Calamagrostis epigejos. Solidago canadensis and woody species were also significantly affected (lower cover and height), whereas short perennial herbs like Plantago lanceolata and Trifolium repens benefited from mowing.

Notes: Telmisartan is a potent, long-lasting, nonpeptide antagonist of the angiotensin II type-1 (AT1) receptor that is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension. It selectively and insurmountably inhibits stimulation of the AT1 receptor by angiotensin II without affecting other receptor systems involved in cardiovascular regulation. Very high lipophilicity, a unique feature of telmisartan, coupled with a high volume of distribution, indicate that the compound offers the clinically important advantage of good tissue penetration. Telmisartan is not a prodrug and has a longer terminal elimination half-life than other commercially available sartans (∼24 h), making it suitable for once-daily dosing. The compound is not metabolized by cytochrome P450 isoenzymes and has a low risk for P450-based drug interactions. In animal models, telmisartan exhibits pronounced cardio-and renoprotective effects in animals with severe, essential hypertension. In clinical studies, telmisartan shows comparable antihypertensive activity to members of other major antihypertensive classes, such as ACE inhibitors, beta blockers and calcium antagonists. These trials have confirmed the placebo-like safety and tolerability of telmisartan in hypertensive patients. Based on these data, telmisartan offers advantages over other sartans and represents an important new treatment option for hypertension.

Notes: This paper explores a dynamic model of product innovation, extending the work of Dutta, Lach, and Rustichini (1995). It is shown that if R&D costs for quality improvements are low, the dynamic competition is structured as a race for being the pioneer firm with payoff equalization in equilibrium, but switches to a waiting game with a second-mover advantage in equilibrium if R&D costs are high. Moreover, the second-mover advantage increases monotonically as R&D becomes more costly.

Notes: Abstract Background: The use of computer-animated surgical instruments for various cardiac operations has been shown to be feasible, but to date, the available information regarding the operative and technical details of these procedures is still inadequate. Methods: We used the Zeus™ (Computer Motion Inc., Goleta, Calif, USA) telemanipulation system to perform the internal mammary artery (IMA) takedown in 56 patients, in 12 of whom we used the newest model with MicroWrist™ (Computer Motion Inc., Goleta, Calif, USA) technology. Port orientation was based on thoracic anatomy, the decisive landmarks being the mammillary line and the axillary line. The distance between ports was at least 9 cm, and the patient's arm was positioned with the left shoulder raised and angulated by not more than 90 degrees. Results: Mean setup time was 44 ± 18 minutes for the first five patients and 16 ± 7 minutes for the last five patients, with an overall average of 24 ± 12 minutes. IMA harvest time at the beginning reached a mean of 95 ± 23 minutes and decreased to 44 ± 18 minutes in the last five cases. Average IMA takedown time was 58 ± 17 minutes. The IMA was patent with a good flow in all 56 patients. Conclusions: The introduction of robotic technology into clinical routine has resulted in safe procedures with a short learning curve. However, basic training in the modality is a must in order to achieve technical excellence. (J Card Surg 2003; 18:1-5)

Notes: Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated gender differences in risk of sudden death in patients with ischemic heart disease. The Multicenter UnSustained Tachycardia Trial (MUSTT) evaluated the ability of therapy guided by electrophysiologic (EP) testing to reduce mortality in patients with coronary disease, ejection fraction ≤40%, and spontaneous nonsustained ventricular tachycardia. Methods and Results: We analyzed the influence of gender on results of EP testing and outcome of patients enrolled in MUSTT. Women made up 14% of the overall MUSTT population and were less likely than men to have inducible sustained randomizable ventricular arrhythmias (24% vs 36%, P 〈 0.001). Baseline characteristics differed between men and women. In randomized patients, women were older, more likely to have had an infarction within 6 months, more likely to have a history of heart failure, and more likely to have recent angina prior to enrollment than men (P 〈 0.05). In the EP-guided therapy group, there was no difference in implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation rate in men and women (45% vs 53%, P = 0.38). There also were no significant gender influences on risk of arrhythmic death or cardiac arrest (2-year event rate 9% in women and 12% in men, adjusted hazard ratio 0.88) or overall mortality (2-year event rate 32% in women vs 21% in men, adjusted hazard ratio 1.51). Conclusion: The outcome and benefit of EP-guided therapy in this trial did not appear to be influenced by gender. However, due to the small numbers of women in the trial, small differences in outcome may not be apparent. Plans for future primary prevention trials should include careful risk stratification of women who less often have inducible sustained ventricular arrhythmias and better left ventricular function despite more frequent heart failure.
