Notes: Introduction: One of the earliest events in wound healing and scar formation is the inflammatory phase. Deficient or excessive inflammatory responses result in aberrant healing. NFK-b is a transcription factor that regulates key genes responsible for multiple intra-nuclear inflammatory cytokines. When bound to IK-B, an inhibitory protein, this factor is in an inactive state. We studied the wound healing effects of irreversibly inhibiting the activation of NFK-b by continuously infusing adenoviral activated IK-B. Methods: Seventy-five male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent subcutaneous implantation of polyvinyl alcohol sponge-osmotic pump constructs. The pumps were filled with a solution containing a genetically altered adenovirus containing the DNA for continuously activated IK-B protein. 50 μl of viral transport media containing 5 × 109 PFU of virus were delivered to each individual sponges daily. Controls included pumps filled with normal saline in one group or filled with sham virus in another group. Sponges were harvested on days 1,3,5, and 7 post-implantation. The sponges were analyzed for TNF-α and nitric oxide (NO) levels, as index of inflammation, as well as for hydroxyproline (OHP) content at seven days, an index of collagen deposition. Results: Treatment with the IK-B virus resulted in significantly higher levels of OHP after seven days when compared to normal saline and sham virus treated sponges (654 ± 81 vs 546 ± 109 vs 498 ± 123 μg OHP/100 mg sponge, P 〈 0.05 by ANOVA). Wound fluid NO concentration was significantly lower in the IkB group after 5 days (38 ± 15 vs 55 ± 12 vs 71 ± 27 μM, P 〈 0.05 by chi-square). There were no differences in sponge TNF-α concentrations on days 1,3, and 5. Conclusions: Treatment of wound sponge granulomas with IK-B increases the amount of collagen deposition after seven days. Reduction of inflammation by inhibiting NF-KB may be a possible mechanism of action, as reflected in decreased NO wound content.

Notes: The differentiation between allergic and non-allergic asthma is a common and important challenge for the clinician. Until now, no in vitro diagnostic characteristics have been described to distinguish between these types. To examine the diagnostic value of a basophil stimulation test, we compared anti-IgE- and C5a-induced mediator release from peripheral blood leucocytes in different types of bronchial asthma.Peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) from 10 aspirin-sensitive asthmatics (ASA), 12 non-allergic asthmatics without aspirin intolerance (NAA), seven allergic asthmatics (AA), and nine healthy controls were prepared by dextran sedimentation. After priming with interleukin-3 (IL-3) PBL were stimulated with anti-IgE and C5a, and the release of histamine (HR) and sulfidoleukotrienes (LTR) in the supernatant was compared. Additionally, purified leucocyte fractions were studied to determine the cellular source of mediator release.Upon stimulation with anti-IgE LTR was slightly, but not significantly, lower in ASA and NAA compared to AA and controls. In contrast, C5a-triggered LTR was significantly higher in ASA (14.4 ± 12.88 pg/105 cells) and NAA (22.9 ± 22.61 pg/105 cells) than in AA (9.6 ± 3.29 pg/105 cells) and controls (7.5 ± 7.19 pg/105 cells) (P 〈 0.05). This difference between ASA and NAA vs. AA and controls was even more pronounced when determining the quotient C5a-/anti-IgE-induced LTR (P 〈 0.001). At an optimal cut-off point of 1.0, calculated by relative operating characteristics (ROC) analysis, the positive predictive value for a donor to belong to ASA or NAA was 0.94. No significant differences could be found in HR between the asthmatic patient groups and healthy controls in either condition. As cellular source of LTR and HR the basophil could be determined.Determination of anti-IgE- and C5a-induced LTR from basophils allows us to discriminate between allergic and non-allergic asthmatic patients. For diagnostic purposes the quotient C5a-/anti-IgE-induced LTR is more significant than considering a single parameter. ASA cannot be distinguished from NAA.

Notes: Background/aims: In moist intertriginous regions, such as the armpit, the pH value is physiologically higher than in other skin regions. The regulation of the axillary pH-value was examined in an open study with 48 subjects in three groups with n=16 each. Methods: In the first 10 days (run-in) the subjects received a standard treatment in the axilla with shaving, cleansing and application of a pH-neutral deodorant. This was followed by a 5 day treatment period with the three test products (pH5 Eucerin® Deodorant Roll-on, Deodorant Balsam Spray, Deodorant Cream). The study was concluded by a wash-out period with procedures identical to the run-in phase. The pH was measured with a calibrated pH-meter.Results: A significant pH reduction was shown during the treatment period when compared to the run-in phase. The Deodorant Roll-on induced a reduction of the mean pH values from 6.1 to 5.3, the Deodorant Balsam Spray from 6.5 to 5.7 and the Deodorant Cream from 6.2 to 5.3. During the wash-out period all pH values returned to baseline. Conclusion: All of the deodorants tested demonstrated a significant reduction in axillary pH. There is evidence that a high skin pH promotes the growth of several microorganisms that produce malodor. Therefore, the regulation of pH may contribute to the deodorant efficacy of the test products.

Notes: Abstract In the temperature range T=10–300 K, photoreflectance spectroscopy was used to study the temperature dependence of residual stress in epitaxial n-GaAs films (1–5 µm thick, electron concentration of 1016–1017 cm−3) grown on Si(100) substrates. A qualitative analysis showed that the photoreflectance spectra measured in the energy region of the E 0 transition in GaAs had two components. They consisted of the electromodulation component caused by the valence subband |3/2; ±1/2〉-conduction band transition and the low-energy excitonic component. The magnitude of stress was determined from the value of the strain-induced energy shift of the fundamental transition from the subband |3/2; ±1/2〉 with respect to the band gap of the unstressed material E 0(T)-E 0 |3/2; ±1/2〉 (T). The increase in the energy shift E 0-E 0 |3/2; ±1/2〉 from 22 ± 3 meV at 296 K to 29 ± 3 meV at 10 K, which was found in the experiments, gives evidence of an increase in biaxial stress with decreasing temperature.

Notes: Abstract A technique involving combined photoreflectance/photoluminescence measurements is proposed to study the electronic properties of semiconductor surfaces. The efficiency of the technique is illustrated by a study of the growth and degradation of the luminescence signal from selenium-passivated GaAs substrates under CW laser excitation.

Notes: Abstract Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) thin films were obtained by a sublimation technique on Si wafer substrates maintained at room temperature. As-deposited CuPc films with less than 0.1 μm thickness crystallize primarily in the α-form with a preferential orientation of the crystallites in the [2 0 0] direction. The effect of randomizing of the orientation of the CuPc crystallites is observed as the film thickness increases, whereas the preference in appearance of the α-form remains. The changes in phase composition, structure, morphology and surface chemical composition of as-deposited CuPc thin films due to different heat treatment conditions were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
